I like to imagine that Starlight zone bad future is more akin to the futuristic cities we see in Sonic Riders but with a more Dark future Cyberpunk movie touch
It prolly sounds like that on the surface but.. maybe underneath it's a disguise for the power sapping electricity bill it gives off and the well robotnik will prolly use it for monetary gain as housing.
It's kinda like Quartz Quadrant in that you can't really tell it's a bad future at first. Then it gets to the chorus and it sounds in a way that sounds best I can describe as a person nearing their end while having a sugar rush.

The person I replied to mentioned the bleak mood of the US version (which still pales in comparison to Tidal Tempest IMHO)
I thought at first this sounded too cheery to be a Bad Future, but I can hear the Stardust Speedway US Bad Future and some White Park Vibes. How can a Bad Future still have such beautiful sound to it though? Edit: The more you listen to this, the more you really notice the sad vibes come out.
See, THIS is how you make a Bad Future remix (or any Sonic CD styled track for that matter) - you have to divert from the main melody, and give it something fresh, while also keeping that hint of familiarity, and this is exactly how you did it! You can _recognize_ it's Star Light Zone, but it doesn't just sound like a rougher, darker sounding copy of the original like many other folks tend to do, instead it has it's own identity that makes it unique from the other Time Zones of the stage

Eggman owns the world. Metal Sonic wanted this part of South Island. Here Metal races against people who want to gain freedom and wait for a challenger. And then Sonic appears in this timeline...
BF: Star Light has, surprisingly, NOT been conquered and/or irreversibly changed by Eggman for once! The trade off? Another nation has snatched up the city and made it their own, namely the Aurum Empire, who has retrofitted the entire city into a teslapunk hellscape. Large lightning rods now attract massive storms to the area, powering a series of tesla coils that provide power to the masses, but at the cost of the old and non-copper-reinforced buildings with their inhabitants becoming victimized by the savage and frequent lightning strikes.
Star Light Zone: This zone has been transformed into a city that Robotnik rules over with an iron fist. While the technologies have advanced far beyond what the present has to offer, Robotnik is this city's dictator, and if anyone disagrees with him, they'll be turned into a badnik on the spot. Sonic will have to ensure he doesn't be seen by security cameras, otherwise he'll be roboticized on the spot!
Star Light BF- Star Blight: After Eggman made the world bow to his will, he decided to make Star Light City one of his personal strongholds. There's increased security detail everywhere and despite the local resistance's best efforts, he managed to keep a strangle on the city. Due to the increased pollution, the stars are barely visible anymore through the smog and flashing neon lights, if at all. The highway has also completed construction, and less parts of it crumble. However, most of the lower parts have also been completely blocked off, and SWATbots are scattered throughout the city and highways, with Metal Sonic as their chief-in-command. If any of them detect you, they will immediately signal for backup, making this zone a pain to traverse.
Bad Future: the sky is pitch black with no stars. The cityscape is illuminated with a blood red hue along with thick smog. The amusement park is complete, but it appears reminiscent of the crimson carnival in Sonic Unleashed.
Man you really found a good feel for the bad future, I thought it would be some Stardust Speedway Bad Future but Starlight Zone, but nope, really subverting my expectations

I like that the main melody is rather subdued, as if the bad future of Star Light Zone is so light-polluted that the stars in the sky are gone. I don't know if that touch was intentional but it sounds very good! Also, what software are you using? The quality sounds amazing and I've been trying to get into music arrangement myself. I suppose it's help from a creator to a creator.
My interpretation is that it became some sort of a Sin City where drugs and crime run rampant. Explains the more rave-y tune as opposed to the normally peaceful tempo.

BF: The whole zone is a dark metropolis, where due to the pollution there is no more star light. In the far BG, instead of skyscrapers what only can be seen are the chimneys of Scrap brain zone expelling even more toxic fumes. in the nearer bg the buildings have been "updated" to make more living space for the robot slaves, being them run down and ugly. All of the highways are prone to collapse due to the lack of maintenace. To sum up, the look of Eggman's Star Light zone, resembles the image of a 2015 Hill Valley version, but with Biff Tannen leading it!
BF, My Proposal: Everything still seems pretty starry at night, right? Well, you would be right, except the entire City is now in a Dome with a Simulated Sky to keep it in a state of Constant Night. Reason being that Eggman has been renovating the entire City into a Tourist Attraction and Homestead for any future patrons who want to enjoy the night life and live lavishly. Tons of Homes and Apartments Destroyed to make way for some Form of Business under The Doctor's management, be it a Restaurant, Night Clubs, Stadiums for Sports and Shows, amongst others. The areas outside the dome, though you might not really notice it, are pretty much ruined, the air is toxic, and those whose homes were torn down are forced to live outside the dome, out of sight. Meanwhile the Dome would house Homes for the rich and powerful, where the air is clean, food is fresh (somewhat), and everything is made of Metals and Hardened Plastics. Even the plant life is fake, made of plastics that make it look real, but upon touch just doesn't feel the same as touching a real plant. Eggman has basically changed Star Light into some simulated dream city, where nothing is as appealing or as comforting as the real deal Star Light once was... Eggman may be living his dream now, but It's time to wake him up and bring him back to the present. Now, where is that Time Travel Sign to the past?
Star Light Zone now resembles Eggmanland from Unleashed. It's still lively here, but there's some tension underneath. Everyone is either loyal to Eggman or is pretending to be out of fear. The stars are no longer visible due to smog like Stardust Speedway bad future. The construction is complete, with less sections crumbling away. Even if the level isn't much harder, more of those robots with spikes around them are here, forcing you to avoid them or use the insta-shield. Eggman's face is plastered all over the place.
Sonic's arrival in the future Star Light Zone under Eggman's rule initially sees him running through the highway, same as in the present, only it's a lot more fast paced due to being completed with platforming being less of a thing here as a result. A far cry from the respite in difficulty of the present. But then, as 0:27 kicks in, Sonic finally gets a moment to see just how bad things are for this part of the massive city South Island has become. Star Light Zone has become rundown due to the pollution caused by the highway's presence and resulting industrial development in the neighborhood. The stars aren't out tonight because of the massive rainstorm going on, although given the smog it's doubtful they've been seen for several years now anyway. On the higher portions of the level, the city has grown enormously with several skyscrapers nearby, an urban sprawl extending all the way to Spring Yard Zone. Many people are still living here, but it's not easy knowing the impending threat of mass roboticization that's bound to occur any day now. Star Light Zone is just another part of the island that's lost its soul, in a sense. Sonic is left both deeply saddened and disgusted at what Dr. Eggman's influence has done to the entire island, but then turns around and notices the highway leading to a massive fortress. Sonic's first journey is nearing its end. All he has to do is head back to the past and get the Time Stone and destroy the generators and another zone can be saved. The future is in his hands.

BF supernova zone the death egg needed an alternative power source before the chaos emeralds he seeked to obtain the near limitless power of the stars by creating a metal fortress beyond comprehension he failed. and the energy became volitaile causing several supernovas destroying countless worlds
I feel like all the major keys make this sound a lot more cheery than a bad future should be. Star Light's theme would probably need to be heavily reengineered to give off the same vibe as a bad future should. Unfortunately, this just isn't doing it for me. But I do love your other past and present mixes for this stage.

It has elements of both. That makes it even better. If you listen to it multiple times, you will understand the sad vibes. Took me a few listens before I understood.
