I worked with a Vietnamese guy that would slurp, smack, and talk with food in his mouth. He made one of the girls in the office throw up and she had to move offices further down the hall
I'm Vietnamese but was taught to use dinner etiquette in Western style since my mom and dad used to live in the EU. So I find people making sounds while eating really disgusting. Of course, it's not the sound when you eat something crunchy. Just don't talk while your mouth is full of food and smack
Slurping doesn’t mean “thank you” It means the food is SOOOO good that you can’t wait for it to cool so you’re forced to slurp to avoid burns. This reflects the quality of the dish and the noise let’s chefs know that they did great!

Uh...that asian etiquette doesnt go for Korea. Japanese purposefully make all those sounds to express the idea that the food is delicious. To them, thats the polite manner, and I think its perfectly understandable. Meanwhile, in Korea, if you bring your bowl to your mouth or make those slurping sounds, or even talk too much, you are considered a rude lowclass idiot, which is also understandable. Anyway, please dont think Japanese etiquette is a representation of all Asian manners,
i think every culture has thier own differences, and every country has thier own etiquette,we just have to learn to accept and respect each others differences specialy when we are traveling in to thier country.
+shreker Your understanding is quite right, but there are also some misunderstandings. The Japanese does not aim to make this sound. We do not feel uncomfortable because it is a sound that comes out naturally in the process of eating noodles most deliciously. It is also a proof that the person is doing the right way of eating, so we may feel that sound is stylish. This scene of movie emphasizes the sound a lot, so it is felt a bit annoying even by Japanese people. Well, I think that this is a very interesting scene that expresses straightforwardly the difference in food culture.
