I woke up this morning with the words " Charles Spurgeon". I had heard the name before, however, he has not really been a part of my spiritual journey. I know very little about him and wondered why his name was brought so sharply to my attention. I am now on a 'fact-finding' mission about this man and am interested in finding out why he sprung to my mind with such unequivocal clarity, especially since there was and is,as far as I can tell, nothing in my experiences or thoughts that would bring him to my attention. I am now trying to put together, through his biography, the pieces and hope to make sense of this , particularly at this stage of my journey of transition...

Wow, thank you, Pastor John, for this powerful, insightful and well-presented exposition of Charles Spurgeons' life. I like that fact that you zeroed in on two points or attributes that characterized his life. That is, the convergence of his love for the God-centered, Christ-exalting, Bible-centered truth and his zeal for rescuing people, all culminating in an avalanche of energy with the consciousness that he was not carrying out the work of the ministry on his own but through the strength of the Lord Jesus. That is very useful in summing the life of this "Prince of Preachers". It it is also very useful in helping me to carve my own path... I now know, to a large extent, why my attention was drawn to him in this season of my life...May God bless you greatly in the next season of your life!!!

Anyone know of any other sermons or resources which focus upon what John was talking about at the end - 'striving according to the power that God mightily works in us'? This is probably my hardest struggle as I used to have an iron will before I was a Christian but lost it when I despaired of myself and my prideful ego. I now have little willpower to do anything, doubting myself and almost overcautious by nature not to rely on my strength, but I haven't yet learnt to rely on his strength either.

In the late 1880’s during the downgrade. He was being vilified by his baptist brothers. Charles had a kinship with those who agreed with Biblical points. He was a Calvinist, not out of an alliance to a denomination or system - but because he thought it was a poor name for full blooded Biblical gospel. Reformed theologian. He was open and unashamed to preach the gospel even if it was called Calvinist creed. He was so riveted of the substitute atonement through the cross.
Some of God’s people are even in the Romanist church.
1861- he was 27- been at that church since he was 19.
Never ashamed to avow Calvinist or Baptist- but a follower of Jesus.
    God centeredness.
Jesus is my creed. You should be talking about Jesus.
Hebrews11 - but going to Philippians 3:17 == keep your eyes of those who walk according to the example you have in us. Christ should be imitated. Then Paul imitates Jesus. Watch those who watch Jesus. If you see a life lived for Christ - watch it.
    Read your Bible!
Whatever Paul expected to happen - watch those who watch Jesus. Watch Spurgeon. First of 17 children. Converted at age 16, being driven by a snow storm into a church and listened to a lay methodist preacher.
A year later he is a pastor - outside Cambridge, England. Moved when 19 to London, New Parks street and teaches 38 years. Zero theological education. One of a million. Probably most well read pastor in England.
In 1906 a man bought his library for $2500. In 2006 the Baptist seminary bought it for $2??,000.
Married in 1856. Had two sons ... one became pastor same church after him. Wife became an house bound.
Preached over 600x before age 20.
His sermons sold 20,000 copies a week and translated into 20 foreign languages.
    He died at 57.
No microphone and he spoke to be heard by 5600 people every week.
It is hard to be heard by 200 people. That’s probably why he died at a young age.
He slept for 24 hours straight.
Charles his son - would think a biased person- testimony - no one could preach like my father. He was extraordinary.
His abilities and gifts and accomplishments so many that we can scarcely list them.
Two qualities = want to happen for pastors
    1. Spurgeon loved Biblical truth. To know truth and to love it as it should be loved and to proclaim it in proper proportions. Must be sound theologians. Do away with Biblical doctrine = is suicide = Biblical feeds life. Two years before death - was very funny man - to illustrate the importance of truth. The enemy has poisoned the children’s bread - open the window and give them fresh air and arrest the poisoners. Storms of suffering have not overturned their boat owed to Biblical truths like a ballast. Hit by waves but have the weight of God in the boat. Survival in life. To know the truth as the truth as it should be known and proclaim it in the right spirit. 2 Thess. 2:10. Your people can perish for not loving the truth. Affections for good things. Watch the pastor love God. Know the truth and love it and proclaim it.
Source was God breathed in errant Bible Word of God. God wrote it.
Bible is worthy of your trust. Deliver it with confidence. Bible saturated preacher. Don’t hoover over the text - point the people to the text and make the connection. Show the people how they got their points! Oh that you and I might get into the word of God... silk worm should eat it and take it into our parts. Saturated with scripture. Be a living Bible. Reformed be known as Bible saturated studies.
    2. Spurgeon loved people and labored for them. To win them and to build them. Not a week that souls were not saved through preached and published sermons. He was a soul winner. People like him - even if they don’t believe Calvinist. Always on the watch for souls. Pick up wounded birds like a hunting dog. Whole soul agonized over souls. Love people and their eternal souls. Salvation of people. 2 corinthians 15 - spend and be spent for your souls... he knew he would die young. We are essential instruments. Pressed forward. Satisfaction with results will be the deathnell of progress ... no man is good that doesn’t think he can’t be better.
Any regrets? Cannot think of anything that I couldn’t have done better.
40 years old ... mid life crisis .... forward in every minister’s life ... do something... while people discussing... get to work ... do something.
Work ... called to be you ... judged if you get out of bed and do what you have to do. Forward.
He was concerned about hell. Meditate shun off all views that minimizes hell. No fear of you being lethargic if you are familiar with the eternal realities.
Fun time at church .... no one talked that way 40 years ago. Death to self ... cross ... hell.
Spurgeon love for Bible center scripture to save souls. Avalanche feed zeal to seek souls for Jesus. Has an orphanages, church, 500 letters to answer, sermon to print, funerals, weddings, soul seeking. On his 50th birthday a list of organizations he founded. He did 50 ordinary mens job. Two mens work in a single day. You have forgotten there are two of us. I labor striving according to His power which he mightily works in me.
Strive in the power of another. Learn the secret of anothers power. Stands as a witness when love of truth and feeds the flame of love of people zeal for the church.
May God make the seminary have a love too.

The man Spurgeon is lost if the chronicles of man about Spurgeon are correct.
The man either did not understand the meaning of the word (Word) or he did wrest the word thinking in error he had the liberty to wrest the word.
If he understood the burden of the Lord and the fear of the LORD he would not wrest that which the LORD magnified above all his name. He would not use the word (Word) which cannot be divided, for the (word) which must be rightly divided.
Try the spirits in his letters and copies of his preaching and know with certainty the man did wrest the Lord's pure word (Word).
The (Word) is the eternal life of the Father and not a second person. The eternal life of the Father was with him and not a second person. The Word, the eternal life of the Father was manifested:
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
    1John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
(The (he) that was manifested in 1John 3 line 5 is the (Father) in 1John 3 line 1):
1John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1 Corinthians 1:13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Spurgeon's doctrine of a 3 persons god is a damnable heresy which he declaring in error the Lord Jesus to be a second person of a 3 persons god.
If this is correct about Spurgeon then he preached another gospel and another Jesus all of which is contrary to the holy scriptures. God is a person known by many names and he is JESUS.
Jesus is the only wise God and Saviour, the Almighty,, the everlasting Father, the blessed and only Potentate; and the Word is the eternal life of the Father which was manifested to take away our sins. God is a Spirit, a Holy Spirit. God is a person and not persons. Interpretations belong to God and the LORD gave us the interpretation of these three are one which we read in 1John 5 line 7 when we rightly divide the word of truth and find the mate lines in the book of Job when Job gave his great witness and warning we read in Job 13 lines 6 through 10.
1John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Job 13:7 Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?
8 Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?
9 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?
10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.
John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
1John @ Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
1Timothy @ That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
    15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
