Sea turtles are one of the major draws for tourists coming to Gili Trawangan. Being able to dive and snorkel around these incredible creatures is a beautiful experience and is almost guaranteed in the Gilis with the large populations of turtles.
There are two species of sea turtles found around Gili Trawangan, Green and Hawksbill.
Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are the largest of all hard-shelled sea turtles. They are found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, and they are known for their long lifespans, which can exceed 100 years.
Green sea turtles are herbivores, and they eat a variety of seagrasses and algae. They are an important part of the marine ecosystem, and they help to keep seagrass beds healthy and prevent erosion.
