They have a quack sound to them though....Depending what you're doing, IDK...I tend to LIKE that myself, but I can see why someone wouldn't. Especially for rhythms.
I preferred the Duncans. Tighter and had a less shrill treble. Emg had too much gain (as you said) so hard to directly compare, but from this comparison the treble on the emgs was too harsh for my liking.
Jari says it all in the ending. People tend to compare SD with EMGs using the same level of gain. EMGs are pretty dynamic with lower gain. Also the lower gain reduces noise. EMG for life 😊
It all depends on how the amplifier or pedal was tuned and where you set it. EMG's have a bass rolloff which tightens up the chugging on low frequencies and a high frequency rolloff that starts around 2kHz. In contrast, passive pickups have much more extended low end, and have a resonant peak in the upper midrange before dropping off in the highs.
Actually, tonal structures were very similar, I just heard more output with the EMGs. It gave the impression of a tighter sound. For that reason I'll say I preferred the EMGs, but it is a very close call here. If I were playing the Solar's I don't think I would be really looking to swap them for something hotter and tighter, necessarily.
*Please thumb this up so Jari sees it* Yes! Please, Jari. Do a series of videos a la Ola Englund where you post behind the scenes of your tours, Q&A's, and teach basic stuff (like recording equipment, computer setup, etc.) See you in San Antonio, finally! after more than 14 years.
on the riffage the decans had quite a bit more clarity to them and were a pinch less harsh imo. if you arent paying close attention though they sound the same pretty much.
He still writes everything on their records. He shredded at a show recently at the end for fun and he's still probably one of the best out there considering his versatility. It's pretty hard though when flanked by Teemu, who has done lessons for Wes Hauch of all people...
The difference was very hard to hear. I guess maybe the sweep part sounded a bit "fuller" with the EMG, but otherwise they sounded pretty much the same to me.
After the first few minutes I had already leaned towards the EMG pickups. The Duncan Solar pickups seem to have a clearer, more precise sound, while the EMG is heavier and more edgy. Gotta say that I resonate more with EMG. Both sound great, though!
This is interesting (and as we heard, made harder by the gain mismatches). The Duncan pickups have more high-end -- whether you'd call that "bright" or "shrill" is a matter of preference I guess. It's most apparent in the final arpeggios, where the string plucking transients are clearly present with the Duncan but much attenuated or muddier with the EMG. I think I like the EMG slightly better, but so much could change depending on the effects being used...
I think you called it correctly about the gain being to high for the EMGs. They were a little too scratchy/bright sounding, if you would have backed off the gain a bit it would have really brought out the thick mids more.
Wintersun Test - EMG 81 & 85 vs Duncan Solar Guitar Pickups. WINTERSUN ALBUMS MASTER FILES: wintersun.bandcamp.com Let the battle begin! Which pickups won? On the side note UA-cam compressed and lowered this video's audio by 3,9db to 64%. So take the audio with a grain of salt. In my opinion this new UA-cam policy of Loudness Normalization is a bunch of bullshit! Please let the artists and content creators decide their own audio levels. We don't need a UA-cam mommy to decide that for us. Idiotic decision by the UA-cam executives. I'm against the Loudness War, but we should still have the freedom to decide our content's audio levels. Thank you! - Jari Wintersun Test - EMG 81 & 85 vs Duncan Solar Guitar Pickups. WINTERSUN ALBUMS MASTER FILES: wintersun.bandcamp.com
I like both sounds but I gotta say the EMG's win on bass & aggression also the sweeps sound more filled out & smoother but I guess each pickup has it's own place depending on the type of song you are doing, great video I look forward to watching more!I could not stop listening to the first wintersun album when it came out!🤘🤘
The Solar Duncans sounded very good, but overall the EMG's did have a more robust sound. That being said, I'm very impressed with the Solar D's as they are passive and were edged out only slightly by probably the most popular active pups brand in the world. I'm actually getting a set of Solar D's today and am looking forward to playing them especially after this video. Thank you for this comparison. Loved the playing🤘🤘🤘
The Duncan sounds significantly tighter and cleaner on the riffs and sweeps, probably because it has slightly less output. To me the EMG's sound a tad muddy in the lows compared to the Duncans.
I like the EMG's. I use them myself, specifically 81 & 60. Everyone says they have too much noise behind them, but it's all based on your set-up & settings. But still, older people tend to dislike the active pickups.
Looking forward to seeing you this October in The states Jari. You inspired my brother and I so much with your music. I HOPE YOU OPEN A STUDIO LATER IN LIFE.
I like passive's for more range.. expressive .. I always wire in a phase reverse switch.. and some pickup pairs really get a good sound out of phase.. only even less output.. just recently.. out of my EMG Actives.. I've started using the 81-60 metal covers set ..and the pi-2 phase inverter. With a 18 volt system.. this is a Very mad range of options... Sounds awesome.. so...it's just... What are You most comfortable with?;?!!
Jari have you tried the X -series? Also the 57/66 and the Het set....I still have the 81/60A/89R in most of my stuff but it seems like alot of guys have moved on to those newer models that are still playing EMG's
Cool shit, always good to hear you jam! I listen to at least one or many more Wintersun songs everyday great music.. EMG's by far, great sound and way more balls.
EMG, no questions asked. More clarity, it handles distortion better than the Duncans, or may be is just me, but in this case I liked the EMG better. Either way, I know you'll make them sound amazing.
Honestly man it was a very good comparison. The Duncan solar output may be lower but both sounded fucking huge through my studio monitors. Great chops man. You’ve earned a subscriber
I have preferred EMGs over my guitar playing "career ". Having said that, you have to tweak EQ on Pedals, amps, modelers, etc to take some of that biting high end sizzle out. Always boost my low mids and low frequencies when using EMGs. I have some SD Pearly Gates in a Tele and have to change EQ dramatically
Thoughts on Seymour Duncan EMTY have you tried either bridge/neck also Emg 89 bridge. From hearing on my setup both sound very woofy, trebley/bassy something sounds wrong. No, my speakers, ain't blown just sounds like the guitar is coming monitors or pc monitors At the end, of the video Emg's sounded really great.
I only listen to music and have no idea about the guitar parts, so my opinion is uneducated af. But I think Duncan sounded "better", maybe because of what you said about the gain in the EMG, specially 85. Off topic: Jari, come to South America, please! I live in Uruguay but I'll take Argentina, it's close enough!
Is the Solar noisier than the EMG, during staccato passages for instance? I have an 81-equipped guitar and a Duncan Solar-equipped one, and the 81 is MUCH quieter. I don't know if the Duncan Solar is the issue or passive pickups in general. The hum is bothering me big time.
I actually prefer neither of these. Whether it's the amp or whatever, they both sounded brittle and sterile in isolation. How they work in the context of a live or recorded setting, well that's a different story. For my own part I prefer more low end grind and crunchiness that you can dig into than an ice-picky high end that usually ends up needing to be dialled out anyway. FWIW, my #1 go-to combo "off the shelf" is Duncan with a TB-11 (Custom Custom trembucker) in the bridge and an SH-1n in the neck. Completely the opposite to what was being aimed for here I guess.
I definitely felt like the gain and bass was a bit too much for the EMGs but there was an inherent "pinned" quality of them that I felt works really well for the Wintersun rhythm tone.
I actually liked the sound of both sets of pick ups so that would not be a deal breaker for me either way. I do however want so ever badly an Solar e series guitar and if Ola ever builds a bass guitar i pray he makes an E series bass.
I liked the EMG 81's the most, then the Duncans and the EMG 85 the least. It was very gainy but as you said that's probably more because you set it up for the Duncans.
Gosh I was hoping the emg 85 in the bridge comparison! That's my favorite bridge pickup that I've played but these Duncan Solar pickups are sounding awesome!
Both sound really good in my opinion. EMG has a bit more punch and is bass-ier, Duncan sligthly clearer. So yeah, depends on personal taste as well as what fits better for the style of music you play.
Right analyse, EMG's dont need Gain at 10. To me, 81 is not so powerfull, ( X2N is more for exemple ) , but i love the smooth side of EMG's, soft palm mute and infinit sustain.
The EMG's feel really warm, where the Duncan pickups are more crisp, if that makes sense. The guitar is an excellent choice, though :-) Ola has really crafted beautiful models.
I prefer the Duncans in this one. I have an emg 81/81, 81/85, and a seymour duncan Distortion/59 in my three so I have the emg love but I love the tone specifically the mid and upper range of the duncan solars! Good vid!
Some of the rhythm parts I liked better with the Duncan Solars, but overall the EMG's sounded better to me. Might've been the gain issue you spoke of that did it. It's hard though, I've tried so many pickups over the years, I can never find the 'perfect' pickup. I tend towards passives, but nothing beats the 81 in the active department imho.
The versions with the Duncan pickups somehow drew me in more. I'm no expert but they had a more "simple" sound for want of a better way of putting it and yet somehow that was more pleasing to the ear. The EMG pickups sounded a bit dull and lifeless in comparison. Having said that, after the comment at 6:41 I have no idea if my opinion would be different if this wasn't the case. Other than that it was a good comparison.
I feel like the duncans have more clear bass tone but are a bit more muddy on the rest of frequencies. In this case I prefer the EMG's. Good work on the video though!!!!
The Duncan Solar pickups don’t sound half bad. I also have mostly used EMGs and I was about to purchase a Solar, and swap the pickups out, but after watching this comparison I may just keep them. I’m assuming that’s a Mark series amp emulation I’m hearing coming from that axe fx in the background. Sounds awesome! How do you like the Solar compared to all of your Ibanez guitars?
of course sd pickups won for me :) Because it sounds more clear than emg. Yes you are right emg pickups have higher output. But we should think that is higher output compulsory to get heavy tone? In my opinion its not. But if we look for clear sound on chords(on distortion mode), lower output pickups(not lowest, just lower than emg) would sound clearly. For example sd nazgul is high output and it makes mid frequencies dirty and mixed up. But pegasus pickups is lower output. It sounds very clear even if the tone is very heavy :)
Both are awesome and will do the job perfectly... EMG has bigger signal strength but honestly it's an active one... That would be sad the other way around...
From the start of comparison I felt that EMG's are overloaded (so you said on 7th minute) and Seymours sounded a little brighter on high strings. But Jari you said nothing about the guitar, how it feels comparing with your favourite Ibanez and Daemoness?)
For me, the EMGs had the advantage. They had more clarity and punch. Not to say the Duncans have anything to apologize for. You could easily tweak the gain and EQ settings to get great sounds out of either one. Good to see you're keeping your guitar chops polished, Jari. I've got tickets to see you when you come to Salt Lake City later this year.
I always feel like that there's hardly any difference as soon as you turn up the gain. At lest when it comes to humbuckers. Sure, some have more output some less, some have a teeny tiny bit more bass or highs, but overall it doesn't matter that much. Maybe the ones that have a lot of bass cause the tone to be muddy but that's pretty much it everything else is a matter of the Ampsetup. Of course that's just my opinion.^^
Excellent comparison, guess which one I liked the most! :)
HURRY UP AND NOSE JOUST JESUS CHRIST
Thanks! :)
Ola I'm not going to forget about that nose battle.
The emg wins in my opinion, but the duncan sounded good too, just the emg sounded better to my ear!
if you make this guy a signature series Ola, i will buy 5 of it. no questions ask. ok, not 5 maybe 2 at least.
Why are you wearing pants?? Is this even jari???
The pants are CGI
His left knee...the hem is there with a slight bit o skin...all is well
Yeah was wondering that too.
I actually prefer the emg's I didn't expect to say that.
Duncan ones are better imo. They have cleaner sound with less hizzle than the EMG
too much treble
Darksun Above sorry dude, you need your lipstick???
A Ke Do you need extra tremble to make you feel more manly and understood? Ah, don't shy away from your inner-softness.
81 ftw
Better clarity, less punch. EMGs are for really clean players, but it's worth it.
They have a quack sound to them though....Depending what you're doing, IDK...I tend to LIKE that myself, but I can see why someone wouldn't. Especially for rhythms.
Who care which pickup won... the real winners are us watching this video.
Exactly
Are you campaigning for president or something :)
I preferred the Duncans. Tighter and had a less shrill treble. Emg had too much gain (as you said) so hard to directly compare, but from this comparison the treble on the emgs was too harsh for my liking.
That's not treble, that's more palm mute chuggage
Don't know if you noticed the Duncan seem like to have a tone higher than the EMG. To me they sound just a little bit cleaner.
Emg are tighter
Your right on the fact that it’s too hard to compare, needed a less fizzy tone to start with
Thought I was the only one lmao
duncan just sounds cleaner, but I like how the 81 sounds
That 3:44 we know what riffs is all about foooooking love #Gojira
Jari says it all in the ending. People tend to compare SD with EMGs using the same level of gain. EMGs are pretty dynamic with lower gain. Also the lower gain reduces noise. EMG for life 😊

More videos like this, love them. Really good camera!
Wow the low end on those EMGs. I typically prefer passive pickups but this sounds amazing!
Only Jari can make "toodle-oo" sound metal🤘
It's like Winter when Jari uploads! Love it!
*Please thumb this up so Jari sees it*
Yes! Please, Jari. Do a series of videos a la Ola Englund where you post behind the scenes of your tours, Q&A's, and teach basic stuff (like recording equipment, computer setup, etc.)
See you in San Antonio, finally! after more than 14 years.
I don't think he has time for this though. If he does, say goodbye to Time 2 right away...
Have you even thought this through? 🤨
on the riffage the decans had quite a bit more clarity to them and were a pinch less harsh imo. if you arent paying close attention though they sound the same pretty much.
Glad to see he still can play guitar xD
He's probably better that 99% of players in their 20s in the entire world, so... Not bad for a mid life rocker.
He still writes everything on their records. He shredded at a show recently at the end for fun and he's still probably one of the best out there considering his versatility. It's pretty hard though when flanked by Teemu, who has done lessons for Wes Hauch of all people...
Duncan definitely. Jari is such an amazing musician. A truly gifted artist. Wintersun will always be a top favorite band of mine.
The difference was very hard to hear. I guess maybe the sweep part sounded a bit "fuller" with the EMG, but otherwise they sounded pretty much the same to me.
Awesome comparison video! Loved your guitar tone and technique!! 👍👍👍
After the first few minutes I had already leaned towards the EMG pickups. The Duncan Solar pickups seem to have a clearer, more precise sound, while the EMG is heavier and more edgy. Gotta say that I resonate more with EMG. Both sound great, though!
Never clicked on a notification from youtube this fast in my forsaken life!

EMG family for life!!!
I think you called it correctly about the gain being to high for the EMGs. They were a little too scratchy/bright sounding, if you would have backed off the gain a bit it would have really brought out the thick mids more.

Dude, your tone is so amazing! Thanks for the video, although I can't really decide myself, as they both sound pretty damn good.
Jari, can we please get a legit full production music video when Time 2 is released? Maybe with a solo from you in it? The things I wish for lol...
No fight on which one is better. Both have their own individuality. You are a BEAST!
The Duncan sounds significantly tighter and cleaner on the riffs and sweeps, probably because it has slightly less output. To me the EMG's sound a tad muddy in the lows compared to the Duncans.

Stoked to see you guys and NeO in Toronto!
Hi! try to feed EMG at 18v/24v emg and you'll hear a new world open! so you can lower the compression and you gain dynamics. great comparison!!!
I like passive's for more range.. expressive .. I always wire in a phase reverse switch.. and some pickup pairs really get a good sound out of phase.. only even less output.. just recently.. out of my EMG Actives.. Is that an ENGL Powerball 1 amp model? I prefer the EMG´s aswell.
Love the comparison! (i prefer the Duncan Solars with a tad fuller low mids) - is that Halford's "the One You Love to Hate" as that opening riff?
EMG, no questions asked. More clarity, it handles distortion better than the Duncans, or may be is just me, but in this case I liked the EMG better. Either way, I know you'll make them sound amazing.
cool comparison would like to hear this in drop A :)
I want time 2 before i die
Love Metal If Jari Never releases Time II you can't ever die and he has thus made you an immortal!
Lace downstroyers "signature Max Cavalera" passive hum buckers are in this wheel house tone wise, but it slays both these easy.
Honestly man it was a very good comparison. The Duncan solar output may be lower but both sounded fucking huge through my studio monitors. Great chops man. You’ve earned a subscriber
Looking forward to your show in munich - no matter which pickups you choose;)
I have preferred EMGs over my guitar playing "career ". Having said that, you have to tweak EQ on Pedals, amps, modelers, etc to take some of that biting high end sizzle out. No, my speakers, ain't blown just sounds like the guitar is coming monitors or pc monitors
At the end, of the video Emg's sounded really great.
Gojira riffs! \m/ btw I preferred the Duncans.
metalmikee imagine Gojira doing a project with jari as their lead guitarist.
Does he play power chords using his pinky to gain more strength in it? Interesting!
The Duncan Solar Pickup sounds way better. More clarity and a much tighter low end. Nice comparison video. Good work!
Jari do a full cover of Painkiller! I want to hear you sing that song :D
they played that song live in 2008 i think
I only listen to music and have no idea about the guitar parts, so my opinion is uneducated af. But I think Duncan sounded "better", maybe because of what you said about the gain in the EMG, specially 85.
Off topic: Jari, come to South America, please! I live in Uruguay but I'll take Argentina, it's close enough!
Arent The Solars just Custom 5 with some fine eq twist?
Is the Solar noisier than the EMG, during staccato passages for instance? I have an 81-equipped guitar and a Duncan Solar-equipped one, and the 81 is MUCH quieter. I don't know if the Duncan Solar is the issue or passive pickups in general. The hum is bothering me big time.
Can´t help it, I just love EMGs but I do think the Duncans sound great too. Some of the best passives I`ve heard.
Duncan for fast riffs that need articulation, EMG for power chords.
Is that Miserable Failure at 2:30?
You just made my mind up. I'm taking the 81s sitting on the shelf and putting them in my a2. 6 solar! I prefer a little sizzle.
Emg all the way, it sounded much fuller. but you should upload more videos like this we need to see you guys play.
I definitely felt like the gain and bass was a bit too much for the EMGs but there was an inherent "pinned" quality of them that I felt works really well for the Wintersun rhythm tone.
I actually prefer the EMGs 🤔 but I also think it wouldn't make that much of a difference
Benji Schober
emgs definitely sounded fatter
Probably the one time I choose the EMGs. Not by much but had some admirable clarity. They're similar though.
As nice as the midrange presence of the EMG is, there's a gross thin slappy treble thing they have going on that I never liked.
I actually liked the sound of both sets of pick ups so that would not be a deal breaker for me either way. I do however want so ever badly an Solar e series guitar and if Ola ever builds a bass guitar i pray he makes an E series bass.
See and hear when you playing guitar is the greatest pleasure!

Hi Jari, guys here! We like both pickups :D
Right analyse, EMG's dont need Gain at 10.
To me, 81 is not so powerfull, ( X2N is more for exemple ) , but i love the smooth side of EMG's, soft palm mute and infinit sustain.
isnt there some problem to change the jack entry or the potentiometer from the EMG kit ? is the solar got same inch or mm than EMG kit ?
The EMG's feel really warm, where the Duncan pickups are more crisp, if that makes sense. The guitar is an excellent choice, though :-) Ola has really crafted beautiful models.
Anybody knows which song is the riff at 4:00 from??
Honestly, the base tone was so biased toward the high end that they all sounded brittle, and I had ear fatigue start to set in by 3:30.
Jari with pants is like non alcoholic beer.
I actually prefer the EMGs in that case.
Lukas Grässlin
same
He just needs to drop the treble at least 5 steps. That thing stings like a million bees. The bass needs presence.
I prefer the Duncans in this one. I have an emg 81/81, 81/85, and a seymour duncan Distortion/59 in my three so I have the emg love but I love the tone specifically the mid and upper range of the duncan solars! Good vid!
the 81s had a bit more chunk, but the solars sounded a bit clearer, but the EMGs, had a bit too much gain in them
Some of the rhythm parts I liked better with the Duncan Solars, but overall the EMG's sounded better to me. Might've been the gain issue you spoke of that did it. Sweet! Thanks for this!
I feel like the duncans have more clear bass tone but are a bit more muddy on the rest of frequencies. In this case I prefer the EMG's. Good work on the video though!!!!
looks sick with the EMGs love that clean flat look myself sounded sick too
The Duncan Solar pickups don’t sound half bad.
Men both sound killer! The amp it's like a Peavey?
The EMGs seemed to elicit more stank face from Jari
I agree with you Jari, the power sound is the highest. ¡Saludos!
Very similar! EMG has a slight heavier sound. But yo ucan also say the Solar is more distinct.
Great playing. The Duncans for me, but it's so subtle.
of course sd pickups won for me :) Because it sounds more clear than emg. Yes you are right emg pickups have higher output. But we should think that is higher output compulsory to get heavy tone? the 81 definitely sounded way fatter and fuller than the duncan
is that high pitch noise during stops coming from the evertune?
I always feel like that there's hardly any difference as soon as you turn up the gain. At lest when it comes to humbuckers.
