    Nah, that's nothing.
Several years ago we were imaging from Golan heights next to Syrian border.
Just taking advantage of lack of electricity in Damascus, whos light washig away northern sky on normal days. And in the middle of the night several army patrol humvees were called upon us.
They saw us on UAV heat seakers and said that our Dobsons looked like some kind of launchers.
Just glad they checked first before launching a "counter attack" )
They stayed with us for the rest of the night and got a free astronomy course )

When I first took interest in astronomy some friends and i took my newtonian telescope to a small road that borders the local airport, I'm not sure why but the vast amount of light pollution didn't cross my mind when we decided on a location. so when we got there we took the telescope out of my friends car and set it up on its mount. I was just about to turn the telescope to the moon when around 5 airport police cars came rushing in to the area and surrounded us, with shouts of "get on the ground! don't move!" as the police rushed out of their vehicles, naturally my friends and i were very surprised and we did as they said. we were all handcuffed and then told to stand and walk to one of the police vans that arrived after the first bunch of police cars.
Once things had calmed down a little they told us that we may be arrested on charges of terrorism and that we had to comply with every instruction, they then asked what we were doing, they also commented that they believed we were in possession of artillery, I explained that we did not have any kind of weapon and the "device" we had was actually a telescope and that we had gone there to look at the moon. the police discussed amongst themselves and inspected the telescope and realised that it was not what they initially thought. We were given a strong telling off and left feeling rather stupid and rather shaken. in hindsight i realised that in grainy CCTV footage setting up a telescope close to an airport could look somewhat suspicious!
I did contact the police after the incident and offer to any of the officers that were there to come and have a look through the telescope at a more suitable location, two of them took up the offer and a few weeks later on a fantastic night we had great views of Jupiter, Saturn & The Moon. there were several jokes made between myself and the two police officers that evening and we were able to laugh the whole thing off as a case of not planning our session!

In mexico it happens a bit different, instead of an encounter with law enforcement, you encounter the cartel people lol, everything turned out fine at the end but it was a scary situation to be in. Be safe out there

Great story. I've been confronted by mountain lions, and coyotes while shooting in Arizona. The local sheriff loved it when I was out there. They liked that I was there to help keep an eye on things in the rural area. They gave me a direct line to their dispatch in case I spotted anything!! Ha!! Love it. You still shot the sky that night!! Great job !!

@@Troutflies71 I was armed, but love animals. To be honest I was more worried about any humans I might have encountered. That's why I had my .45 all night! LOL

Nice story! I love the ambient sounds, it really adds to the atmosphere.
One time me and my dad drove out to one of my church's parking lots that was in a decent location with little light pollution, and got out my setup and started shooting the Milky Way. Sometime through, a police car pulled in and the officer asked us what we were doing and we explained we were doing astrophotography and church parking lots are good for recreational activities as such. The officer laughed and let us continue, and told us that they just check out what people are doing late at night because apparently dumb teens will hide in the parking lot and drink and smoke.
I don't think we were close to being arrested 😅

CS !

I just started astrophotography, and have been worried about this. In some scenarios I imagine someone would call the police for “spying” on someone. And some equipment from far away looks like a gun. I know the chances of this happening are very minimal, but I still think about it when I go into a public place to set up my camera

My Astro-buddy and i used to do a lot of 'trespassing' to find low Bortle sites and had a few scrapes with landowners. We now set up on disused public roads... Which is more alarming to the nighttime dog walkers 🤣🤣

Nice story, I am going all the time in the middle of nowhere for astrophoto and many times the police is seeing me, they are asking for id and ask what the hell I’m doing there and after a small conversation the only things I loose are some subs destroyed by their flashlights or car headlights. Thanks for sharing.

I have one dark sky I go to. The last time I went was Before even having a startracker. The cops came both times I was there but they were cool. I recommend having your I.d. ready no parifanilla and putting a note on your car with your phone number in the window. Be cool but stand your ground. The cameras, telescopes and gear are proof that you are photgraphing the night sky.
I am planning on going back not that I have a ton more skills a star adventurer eq6r pro. For now I am lucky enough to have at least a bortle 5 for a backyard.
    Clear skies

Personally, I believe that is a great story to start an epic adventure movie on how 3 greenhorns wandered upon a restricted base outside Roswell, New Mexico, only to find an alien space craft and its occupants communicating with NASA about how to reach light speed propulsion using only a cigarette lighter. It could happen...

An astrophotographer from South Africa mentioned he had a lion walk between him and telescope. Fortunately the lion didn't seem interested in asrophotography or the astrophotographer. After that incident the astrophotographer took to hiring an armed guard when he went out to do some imaging.

That story was good! Unluckily it sounds familiar to me... as I work in the night in the Forest and Fields (I work with bats) and live in Germany. I use the time after my work to stay wherever I am and when the weather allows it, to take some Astro pictures. I have been stoped by police several times and aproached by hunters a thousand times (they don't like anybody else there at night!). I bet you know that in Germany you need a permission to drive into the forest or other ways where just farmers/hunters/rangers are allowed to drive. Also normal people who see your car parked inside a forest road just take your plate number and inform the police (happened to me few times) and police may call you or directly come to your house to ask you some questions... It is annoying at times! Something I bet you also know is that in Germany there is ALWAYS someone there, around the corner, behind your car or even behind a tree in the middle of nowhere!! 😂😂😂 Stay safe!
