  • LIVERPOOL TOGETHER - 'Music for the Mind and Soul' is Milap's flagship concert series, with performances taking place across the UK at many major venues, including the Southbank Centre (London), The Bridgewater Hall (Manchester) and at Liverpool's Capstone Theatre. Following the national UK lockdown in 2020, the programme was moved online, with specially curated studio recorded concerts designed to; support people in their isolation, entertain, lift people's spirits and improve health and wellbeing - all available FREE through Milap's UA-cam Channel!
'Music for the Mind and Soul' is continuing to thrive in its new digital format, and in this special online performance marking the 1-year anniversary from the start of the first lockdown, Milap mark this moment in history by presenting music from violin virtuoso HN Bhaskar, accompanied by two of the subcontinent's most celebrated percussionists, Patri Satish Kumar (on Mridangam) and Anirudh Athreya (on Kanjira). This performance features two of the most intense Carnatic Melakartha Ragas - ‘Gaanamoorthi' and ‘Hemavathi’.
H.N. Bhaskar (HNB) is the son of HKN Murthy. He is a senior and leading violinist hailing from Mysore. After many years of advance training under his father, he left Mysore to study with MSG. HNB has gone on to become one of the top violinists of his generation in all aspects of violin playing; accompaniment, solo and experimentation in new genre. HNB has, throughout his career, enriched music concerts with his violin accompaniment. His playing technique is marked by great dexterity and unfailing support born out of deep understanding of the main musician. Bhaskar is a much sought after violinist, having accompanied many of the major figures in Carnatic music around the world. He is a veritable bridge between the past and present generations of musicians and music-lovers.
Patri Satish Kumar was born into a family of musicians. He was initiated into the art of percussion by his mother Padmavathy, a renowned violinist and had his debut at the age of 7. A fine performer, composer and with a deep interest to innovate and explore the art form, his specialization is his precise fingering technique and the fine balance of sounds between the treble and base heads of the Mridangam.
Trained by Gurus Sree Ramachandramurthy, V.A.Swami and V. Narasimhan, Satish Kumar continues to evolve a style of his own that is distinctly his own. Satish has been a regular feature in prestigious venues and festivals across India and around the world including BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall - London & The Music Academy - Chennai, to name a few. As a seasoned international performer & an “A-Top” ranking artiste of the All India Radio, Satish continues his journey and is one of the most sought after mridangists in world.
Anirudh Athreya is the great grandson of legends Sri Papa KS Venkatramiah & Alathur Sri Subbier. His grandfather Vidwan Sri V Thyagarajan was also a renowned violinist. Seeing Anirudh’s keen interest in rhythm and percussion as a child, his grand uncle, Kanjira Maestro Sri V Nagarajan, instantaneously volunteered to teach him to play the Kanjira. His skills were further polished by Mridangam wizard Dr. TK Murthy. Majestic in tone, his speciality is accompanying for music and being sensitive to the melody around him. Anirudh has the unique distinction of being the youngest Kanjira artiste to have accompanied all senior artistes in the field of Carnatic Music and is one of the youngest musicians to have been awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Oh! This is melody at its best! HN Bhaskar's bowing technique would have gladdened his Guru MS Gopalakrishnan's heart. What silken smooth flow of music! Ganamoorthy and Hemavati were both pure honey. And Patri Satish Kumar's mridangam has a special naadham that embellishes the soothing sounds of the violin. Not to forget young Anirudh Athreya who is already a well established maestro with his Kanjeera, despite his young years. Coudn't ask for more.

Someone here commented Patri's plays like tabla on the Mrudhangam. It's exactly that characteristic of Mrudhangam play makes it exclusive and innovative.
I am sure he doesn't violate the rules of orthodox Mrudhangam rules though I have no initiation to that instrument.
The tonal variations created in his play has nearly become a genre of its own and gets addictive after paying close attention to his play such that general Mrudhangam play sounds lack lustre ..!
I hope his style of play finds more and more professional following and wider listener acceptance. 🎉

Excellent!. and Patri sir amazing as always. Wish he would play the left side more traditionally and use the 'tabla' effect only occasionally/as a surprise element/s.

Shri Patri should use original Mridangam. It sounds like tabla

It is original Mrudhangam only. It is the innovative style of play that is exclusive to Patri.
Btw, I am no percussion artist except listening to Mrudhangam.
Listen to couple of his play in good stereo you will fall in love with Mrudhangam as a percussion instrument and you won't feel like listening to any other artist playing Mrudhangam.
In my mind he has single handedly brought a whole new dimension to this instrument.
