Genesis, a fan since the 70s. Favorite albums: 1. Foxtrot 2. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 3. Selling England by the Pound 4. A Trick of the Tail 5. Nursery Cryme. I will also say something good about Yes: 'Awaken' is a great song.

Definitely Genesis for me. The Lamb, Selling England, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme, A trick of the tail, wind and withering, and then there were three, so many classic prog albums. Lot of great stuff in the 80s too.

I love both bands. Between about 1970 and 1977, I feel they were both equally good. That all said, Yes is my favourite band of all, along with those four lads from Liverpool, so Yes gets my vote here.

Great video. I still need to dive into both bands, but from what I've heard so far, I prefer Yes. Makes me wonder if any other bands or artists could work in a versus-style tier list like this.

Yes is a huge reason as to why I got into prog and for the longest time would’ve been my choice. However, since around August or September, I’ve been listening to Genesis nonstop. The first album I listened to was nursery crime and it knocked my socks off. Needless to say, foxtrot and selling England blew my mind. According to Spotify, they’ve been my most listened to artist since September and I don’t see myself putting them down anytime soon. All their albums from trespass to wind and wuthering are amazing(duke as well). Foxtrot is my favorite of theirs and I now consider it to be one of my all-time favorite albums now. As much as I love yes there’s just something about Genesis that never gets old to me

The first time I heard ‘Fragile’ and ‘The Yes Album’, I was blown away. I then proceeded with ‘Close To The Edge’ and that was another really good album. I do prefer my albums to have more songs, but it doesn’t detract too much from CTTE. Anyways, I’m really excited to continue exploring their catalog. My next stop is either ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ or ‘Time And A Word’. Genesis, I need to check them out someday. I’m only familiar with some of their ‘80s hits, which I like (especially “Misunderstanding”), but I know nothing from the Peter Gabriel era. If I love those Yes albums, where would you recommend I start with Genesis?

Yes get my vote 🗳. Genesis jumped the shark 🦈 in the 80's & 90s. The Lamb .. is my favourite Genesis album & Close To The Edge my favourite Yes album. 90125 earns Yes my vote 🗳 best post 70's album of either band.

I am fan of Yes and Genesis, I prefer Yes and agree with your classification of Yes albuns (specially TFTT, Relayer and CTTE - in this order) . But I believe the classic Peter Gabriel Genesis are all also S tier - I absolutelly LOVE Nursery Cryme. And yes, Keystudio is one of the greatest Yes albuns

I like your ranking/points system. I love both groups. I stopped at Big Generator with Yes so I can't comment on the later albums. Doing the same system with the albums I'm familiar with the results are Yes-3.91 Genesis-3.2
However, I listen to Genesis more often.

Excellent idea. Genesis or Yes? Who is better? I will never know the answer to this difficult question. In the years 1970 - 1974 they released unforgettable, brilliant albums. Later on, it was a really different time for music. Both groups changed their style. This is no longer "my" era in music.

Genesis up to Steve's departure. They were awesome live in 76, 77. Yes took more risks when playing live and neither band ever delivered a bad show when I saw them, although watching Trevor Horn get heckled in London in 1980 was a real low; the rest of the band were playing their ***** off. Yes had a great re invention in the 1990s when Rick and Steve were back together and the 35th anniversary shows were splendid. Just grateful to have been able to see both groups at their peek.

I enjoyed your list quite a bit. Even though I have a hard time choosing what I consider better. I would say I am a bigger YES fan. I agree with a lot of your placements but some choices were not where I would have put them. Regardless it was an interesting exercise. Thank you. I think Genesis has them beat on live albums though.

Yes has always been my favorite prog band. But Genesis has always been my favorite prog band too. I like your evaluation system. I wonder what my results would be. I am disappointed that you didn`t include Fly From Here ( Yes ). Benoit, a fellow Canadian brother, deserves the respect. It is the last great Yes album ever recorded. ( In my humble opinion ) I listen to it all the time.

Hey Larry! A big fat Yes for me! That is not a knock against Genesis as I have the complete discography for both bands. 'Close to the Edge' is my 2nd fav prog album of all-time, and 'Fragile' is a top 50 album for me. It took me 40 years to get into "Lamb", but I still find "Tales" to be boring after 50 years. I don't think any Genesis album would rank as high. But that's just me......Cheers!

I say Genesis. I like all of the Genesis albums from 1972 - 1986. Where I only really like Yes from 1971 - 1972, plus 1983. There's a few other Yes songs I like from other years, but not many. No more than two on any of their other albums. Where I pretty much like everything on all of the 1972 - 1986 Genesis albums. Plus a few more songs after and before that era.

A bit apples and oranges. IMO little from Yes after Relayer (and parts of Going For The One) is really all that great, whereas even post-Gabriel Genesis was exceptional - at least as long as Steve Hackett was still onboard. That being said, my shortlist of all time favourite prog albums would have to include both bands (Close to The Edge, Selling England By The Pound, Foxtrot, Nursery Crime, Tales From Topographic Oceans)...

Genesis is my favorite, but not by much, at all. Trespass thru Wind & Wuthering would be S Tier for me, these albums are perfection for me, I really like And then there were 3, but not like the previous. Yes's S tier for me would be, The Yes Album through Relayer & Tormato, Going for the One is very good, but side 1 doesn't really do it for me, but it's very good. Out of both bands & any other bands too, the most important member for me is Jon Anderson, love his voice, he's the definition of Prog to me. I love Olias Of Sunhillow, amazing.

I’ve always been a Genesis man but as I look at both bands the music of Genesis changed so badly during the 80s that I may be beginning to change my point of view. You do need to give Wind and Wuthering more time because it really is very underrated and after this one Genesis fell off the rails for me

Floyd, I can sort of hear why you say that. But Tull? You don’t think Thick as a Brick, Passion Play, Minstrel in the Gallery, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses or Stormwatch are prog albums? They sound just as ’proggy’ to me as anything by Genesis, Yes or ELP. How are you defining prog? There are complex song structures, unusual time signatures, symphonic elements, fusion of genres, on those Tull albums.

You may say that Genesis stuff since Hackett's departure not that interesting at all. But frankly Yes even as a proggy band didn't do much anything special after the 70s. And now? Who cares for their new albums other than collectors? And their shows? It was painful to see unhealthy Alan White trying to do some drum work though he's not the same anymore. Last Genesis tour...same thoughts . Do we needed to see Phil Collins in his current poor condition ?

Probably controversial but here's my take.
Yes - their 70s stuff is sublime and beats any other prog band for me, but it stops there, not interested in anything they've done since 1977
Rush - their 70s stuff is my favourite but they made good stuff in all eras
King Crimson- their 80s stuff is almost as good as their 70s stuff, it sounds more poppy at first listen but it's actually musically very complex.
Genesis - Sorry, I could just never get into their 70s stuff for some reason. Just something a bit to twee about it for me. But I actually quite like their 80s stuff. Which of the above three bands had a single as good as "Turn it On Again"
