My wife and I purchased our first home in 2009. The basement had flooded during the first week. We called a plumber. He told us how our pipe had collapsed and that it would cost us nearly 7k to replace the pipe. He also explained that the quote did not include clean-up, as he was going to bust through our in-ground pool and just leave us with a monumental mess. We were young and felt devastated.
I called for a second opinion. The second guy snaked the drain and said the pipes are perfectly fine. 85 bucks and all is good.
    ALWAYS GET A SECOND QUOTE.

Some years ago I had water in my yard. I called a local plumbing company, and they came out and said the pipes had cracked inside the foundation, and quoted me $8,000.00 for a repair job which would require rerouting ALL of my pipes through the walls in the house.
After closer investigation by me, I went to Lowe's and bought some materials, and then I repaired a leaky connection where the supply line from the street connected to the main house line. I spent about $25.00.

I loved working as a service tech for Bell Atlantic who got their money from everyone's phone bills each month. If the problem was inside the home, and the home owner didn't have a wire maintenance plan, we were supposed to charge them a service call and at least 15 minutes. I had a woman tell me "I'm single, live here by myself and I can't afford that". It hit me in my heart. I looked in the box and found a rusty NTW and told her it was a problem. She asked if it was causing the problem. I said "no", but because it is a problem I won't charge you". She got the wire maintenance plan immediately, I disconnected the inside wire causing the problem, and she had a phone in use. The following monday the manager and my supervisor told me I had to go back to that job and fix it, and they're coming along also. She told them everything that happened and said "I'm switching my cellphone service over to Bell Atlantic and you all have good people working for you, is he losing his job over this". Both my supervisor and manager looked at each other and said "no, he won't lose his job over this". The problem was a shorted phone, and because she bought the cheap wire plan I was supposed to charge her because it was her PHONE causing the problem. I didn't charge her. I had a heart. A single woman paying everything is rough. I kept a customer too. I changed her jack and said she needed the new gel jacks to keep corrosion from ruining the connection. She asked if it was the problem and I told her no, don't plug that phone back in". I don't understand how people don't have hearts and can rip people off. I don't. Do right, do people right, and you will become a big successful company that people will pay for your services. Rip people off and you'll get your customer or 4 every month and make a little money. I got a heart and could never rip people off. A simple service call, I'd feel bad about having to charge someone a hundred dollar service call to push a fuse back in. YET, the company has to get that hundred so everyone gets payed. Fucked up catch 22.

To sell, sell, sell, or they lose their job, cause there numbers are to low for the company to make a large profit. I've been in the plumbing Business for over 20+ years and over 85% of plumbing companies, I've worked for, constantly push to upsell, they even have monthly or even weekly meetings on making the sale. Rotor Rooter is the biggest scam known to plumbing. A normal main sewer clearing will cost $99-$200. When you call Rotor Rooter it's a minimum $450+ and they try to sell you on an insane amount of stuff.
The only deviation from Rotor Rooter protocol is that the protocol is to successfully scam the customer. Since the salesman did not do that (they aren't plumbers, they are salesmen), the salesman violated Rotor Rooter protocol.

I understand the frustration of the cost to have a technician come and do work. There are a lot of techs that rip people off. I see this almost on the daily and am constantly righting others wrongs into rights. Something that all you should understand though is there is a standard pricing in single family home and commercial service repairs. This is something that all of you should look into before you start accusing someone of attempting to rip you off. These costs of repairs are the price you pay for business operating costs and the specific skills know how. I do recommend a second opinion on these matters, unfortunately many contractors charge a service fee so not only would you be paying once for a tech to come out but twice for what would most likely become the same information.

When the economy is bad,and a contractor has alot of employess and trucks on the road you are more likely to get taken, even from a honest contractors at times.FACT.There IS a bottom line for how much a company HAS to make each day to break even, and that's just to break even.WE are NOT in business to break even.HVAC is a tough business. The overhead can be ridiculous. Each tech that goes out in the morning has to come back with a minimum amount of money to cover his pay for the day,and business overhead and profit.Profit is NOT a bad word.I DO NOT tell customer they have to do this,do that.I suggest to them to change certain parts cause of their age, visual condition of the part. This is called preventive maintenance.Commercial I look for everything I can write up to make money. However,my boss does not mark the parts up ridiculously .

so its the consumers problem that a company has tons of overhead and probably a bunch of useless employees? I dont think so, I run an HVAC company and I would never rip off the customer. Long term customers are worth much more than a short term payday. For you to even say that consumers are going to get ripped off even by honest companies is a joke. Maybe you should find a different career path.

Beware of Large Plumbing companies that advertise heavily Imho. The "techs" are Pressured to sell, sell, sell and it can border on dishonesty alot of times. In Greensboro NC there are two large companies that have a fleet of "green trucks" and I go behind them all the time.Roto Rooter too! They charge twice what I do and the Licensed guy is sitting in a golf cart on the golf course I guess because you won' t see him at your house

    I worked at Roto Rooter...
The problem really is the companies that pay you commission based salaries...
R.R. only pays 20% and 25% if you're licensed... of the labor ONLY. Then they set prices with a lot of places. So imagine at 2 in the morning having to catch an emergency call for 20% of $85.00. (True story) Your definitely gonna pad that bill!!! Then you provide your own gas and work vehicle. The only way to make any money as a plumber with these companies is to find a way to maximize the work and labor fees. THE COMPANIES PUSH YOU TO DO THIS TO THE CUSTOMER or you bust your ass and go home with McDonald's money.

Once I do a thorough evaluation of the problem and finds that the nut was loose I would tighten it and assure the line wasn’t leaking and just charge a service diagnostic fee and be on my way. I believe in treating a customer property like it’s your own not like a dollar sign

I do all my own work. I've been scammed and can't afford it. I was a carpenter than painter and rehabed some homes. Plumbers are the worst. I learned how to sweat pipes and just about everything about 8 years ago. When you learn what they actually do and how easy it is on your average house, it makes me go baserk that they charge me 2 weeks worth of my pay for 5 hours worth of work and its not brain surgery. This plumber came by that my ex called wanted to charge her 220 dollars because the toilet was running. I came home and kicked his fucking ass out of my house, called him a fucking thief and removed the old toilet bowl cleaner puck away from the stopper in 5 seconds. Most are nothing but thieves they should be thrown in jail.

What you dont understand sir is most times not all, its better to repair most parts if its a older toilet etc. Because if you were to repair just the flapper or fillvalve on the toilet many times other stuff tends to breaks or leak. Then you get called back for not doing a good job, should have fixed it right the first time etc. Then you have to charge again and customers is really pissed. Its like the mechanic only fixing oneside of your brakepads replace all of them if you know there gonna start screeching a monthe for now. I just think your a cheapskate...lol.

I am a plumber and this is the dumbest thing ever. 99.9 percent of the time if there is water around a tank it is the tank and needs to be replaced. Half these guys weren't trying to scam anyone they probably honestly thought they needed a tank. Why would a nut all of a sudden start leaking. Trying to make us all look bad now. And even if it takes 15 minutes it should still be a min charge. Why praise the guy who gave it out for free he ruins it for the rest of us trying to make a living. You don't expect a freebie from the chiropractor when it only takes a minute to crack your neck do you. People always wanna be cheap to a tradesman even though some of us highly trained.

"hot" or "cold" is a relative thing. Since liquid water is clearly above 0 degrees Kelvin, even what we call "cold" water is very hot by absolute zero reference, so even 55 F is very hot on the scale between absolute zero and steam. It's just a mixup/combination of "hot water maker" and "water heater". Don't let it bother you.

  • @geniemeadows5122

I had a plumber who caused a bit of a flood in my toilet and someone else who caused a fountain in my toilet that went downstairs, also another
who finished a job within about 70 mins and stood around downstairs making it stretch to 5 hours or so (I think it was 6) pretending he had to go
get a part in the city. All the tradesmen have been corrupt and done the dirty on us and caused huge damage and 1000s of bucks. They always pretend to go and get parts
too and actually go for lunch for ages and charge the earth and stretch the time out hugely.

And, this is yet ANOTHER reason why I love living in “Smalltown, USA”! In the town where I live (pop. >9,000), everybody knows everyone, which is one of the things that big cities can’t do. Here, any and all service people who work on something of yours {i.e. plumbers, mechanics, etc.} also shop at the same grocery stores as their customers, they go to the same bank, etc., etc., etc. So, besides being raised with good morals and values, knowing they have to literally face the very people that hire them helps keeps them “honest”. 😁
