I noticed when I was visiting people just said het is twintig voor elf as opposed to referencing the half-hour. Was it just an Amsterdam thing as opposed to the "correct" way?
That's also okay to do. Some people say twintig over elf for example. So they change the four sections so that the first and fourth section is five minutes longer and the second and third one is five minutes shorter. Both options are fine to use

i mean i respect dutch people and appreciate their seriousness and the high standards to which they live.. but i honestly reading the clock in dutch is soo dumb, almost as dumb as pronouncing 80 un French.. like why the hell would anyone say "it is ten to half a nine" for 7:20
