    I have worn drop-in midsoles for basketball exclusively for the past 4 to 5 years (and I am getting up there in age now). I actually find it difficult to go back to sown in midsoles. I think the video does make a few assumptions that are not exactly correct (IMO). A sown in midsole doesn't necessarily create greater stability for the foot. The midsole is firmly attached, not necessarily your foot. Depending on the fit of your shoe, players often have movement of their feet inside the shoe, even in sown in midsoles. Also, the drop in midsoles is usually so tight within the shoe that there isn't a whole lot of movement of the midsole itself. This brings up what I believe is the best benefit. With proper sizing, the drop-in midsole allows for a more snug 1 to 1 fit. The shoes often feel much more lightweight, flexible, and allow you to move more seamlessly on the court usually with incredible court feel. While I have not had any issues on the court, I could see how drop-in mid-soles could add stressors on the foot, especially in heavier athletes (you don't see a lot of centers playing in Kobe AD NXT 360s). That said, this particular shoe was designed for slashing/shifty guards, who tend to be lighter players who champion court feel. Finally, most basketball players/professional athletes use equipment that is different from what is sold at retail. The fact that Serena's design of the shoe is different, doesn't really say too much about drop-in midsoles themselves. That is kind of par for the course. All that said, even though I disagree with some points, I still think this was a great video.

      Thanks! Yeah I just can’t get on board with that much micro motion in a shoe for the general public- I agree for more shifty side to side movement in a lighter player i think you’ll get more of a low to the ground lighter feeling but most people I see in my office for midfoot sprains or ankle sprains are due to unstable shoes- like I said the more areas of motion in the shoe the more opportunity for instability - that being said if you train your intrinsic muscles to use this kind of set up like you your brain just gets used to it and thrives in them

    Personally, I'm a 6'10 235 center and the best shoes I've ever worn are Way of Wade 808s 2/3s. I've been using these shoes for the past year, and I've only had one sprain (4 on each ankle at this point I think) that happened in the past year, and it was actually while wearing my old favourite shoes, the OMN1S by New Balance. The 808s are way tighter to the court so I can move much better than before, and the grip is amazing. Nothing moves inside the shoe. Personally don't see myself going back to anything not 808 until I try a drop in midsole from another brand maybe, but I love them.

    Converse bb drop in react is an example, specially Ja Morant had his shoes modified "source from Nike report", because the shoes doesn't have shank plate.
    But the others athele represent that Converse bb launch, they don't require modification, like Kelly Oubre.
    This means that y'all need to know the take-away of the drop-in actually really important- that it mays do harm to you while functioning in them. Nike doesn't really address this health issue/ warning within their product- not that i n others can see on the website.
    Really best advice is to see specialist if you aren't sure about these things. And this channel is awesome!

    I just discovered your channel today and it's exactly the type of content I have been searching for, awesome stuff!
    I've played basketball in a lot of shoes and personally I really don't like drop ins. for one thing I don't like the feeling of the surface of the foam underfoot, and several of nike's basketball shoes with drop ins also lack a torsion bar, and I find the midsole far too flimsy to prevent overflexing. Also as a flat footer that has overpronation issues, I find that drop in midsoles do nothing to prevent overpronation, in fact it makes it worse because the inside of my foot can freely sink into the midsole, amplifying overpronation, messing up my body alignment and leading to achilles tendon pain.
    Anyway love the content man!

    I really enjoy your vids and as a basketball player, appreciate you looking into the GT cut and specifically the drop in midsole.
    I’ve had quite a different experience with drop in midsoles. I own a pair of Kobe AD NXT 360’s and Allstar pro BB’s which both utilize Drop-ins and they have been by far the most stable and 1 to 1 fitting shoes I’ve ever owned. For context, I’m am a pretty explosive basketball player and have preferred drop-ins over the traditional cushion setup sense playing in these models. The top layer of the drop-in midsole used in the Kobe model has a sticky material that locks your sock to the footbed and prevented my foot from moving around in the shoe. The shoe’s upper wraps my foot well enough that the drop-in is sandwiched tightly between my foot and the thin outsole. Lastly, I noticed that the drop ins have a shorter stack height than the traditional cushion setup which made me feel more stable and close to the ground but without sacrificed cushioning because it was directly under foot.
    But, I’d love to discuss more about your findings on this if possible. I’ve been really interested in drop- in midsoles and value your expertise in this filed.

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  3 роки тому +2

      That’s awesome insight- I wonder if it’s the textured / tacky interface and glove like fit that you are feeling that is giving you that performance in spite of the drop in- I’ve had a few people comment on one side of the fence or the other today- I’d love to keep the topic going in future videos just because it fascinates me where people see benefits from it and other people don’t- at the moment I’m still steering my patients away from them but a shoe like the GT cut with the large surface area outsole and glove fit I still think is a winner of a shoe despite my reservations on the drop in

    • @JoseMaloof
      @JoseMaloof 3 роки тому +1

      I also am #TeamMidsoleDropin. There is no better shoe to ball in than the Kobe 8-9, Lebron 11. Drop In is for me. Also some stablitity issues can be also seen on tradicional shoe construction, if not fitted right. On these type of shoes, sizing is critical and will not be well fitted to all types of feet. Serene Williams is a good example, but also some other athletes go the other way arround, they use the midsole modifies with more air (zoom) support, so the stack is higher ("unstable").

      I disagree with your theory of micro motion, I would argue that being caged in rubber and not having any exterior compression of the midsole is more stable. Also my other theory from wearing shoes, such as Kobe’s are the chassis system of having everything else built around you to keep the shoe minimal, yet supportive is better, however I can agree with your more official opinion and I would love to hear a follow up after you play some more in the GT Cut

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  3 роки тому

      It’s not my theory, it’s common practice in brace and orthotic making that you want to avoid micromotion and microtrauma as it can lead to instability and ulceration of the skin- I’ve talked to a few buddies who are collegiate basketball team docs and they won’t let their schools buy that design shoe- it’s an interesting phenomenon that it’s coming back into vogue but I’m still steering my patients away from them- just too much risk looking at the pure biomechanics

    What should i wear if i play basketball? I have collapsing arch on both feet. Should i add an insole for arch support on top of the stock insole of my basketball shoe?

      Depends on your foot type - I wouldn’t be able to give specific recommendations without an exam unfortunately - my favorite for arch support are the KD14’s but I always take out the insole before putting an orthotic in

    Well you can't wear orthotics with a drop in midsole the shoe won't fit

    Hi Zach,
    With all due respect, I seriously suggest you to try out the gut cut yourself, you may be missing something with a mindset like that. I personally own a wide variety of different basketball shoes and insoles, and costume insoles. So far in my life, I played the best in the zoom gt cut. Now I took a look and the tennis shoes you have there actually has a very outdated system, I think it’s almost the same that Nike used on the Kobe 8s so very outdated. In my opinion the gt cut just has a improved system, it’s different please check it out, the insoles are kinda like the diabetes insoles with more wear it forms to your feet. And the cushion is similar to the zoom gp turbo so enough said I think you will actually end up liking them. Cause I can almost agree with every other video of yours.
    That’s my honest opinion and have a nice one!

      I plan on reviewing them- i think for people who have the footwork required for a drop in they’re good but for anyone who has instability , needs an orthotic , or shears a lot they’re going to run into too much see sawing, wobbling / arch strain/ and abnormal midsole wear - that being said if you have the right footwork they can be a real asset - I just know at least with alot of pro athletes they don’t trust them either with the number of court athletes using standard vs drop in but that could change for sure and I’ll be on the wrong side of the debate - but that’s what makes these videos fun- looking forward to trying them- thanks for the comment 👍👍👍

    The slapping explanation makes no sense, In these shoes with drop in midsoles your foot is pressed against the entire shoe like a sock, there is 0 movement thats why this type of shoe is amazing because you can stop and turn anywhere anytime because the shoe is literally your foot.

      Your foot is directly on the midsole yep- but the midsole isn’t attached to anything below- it’s impossible to eliminate the micro motion- I’m not saying they’re bad for all people by any means but there are people who should avoid them - not all tech is good for all feet

    Is this more of an issue for foot height within the shoe? As in the top of your foot not engaged with you the upper without even moving. I've played ball in the Kobe 8, Kobe 9, and Lebron 11 that had great drop in midsole systems.
    The algorithm sent me here because I recently purchased the Nike GT Cut that I'm eager to try on court.

      I don’t think its so much foot height just that there’s potential instability in the frontal plane when cutting back and fourth- but some really like the freedom it gives too so different strokes for different folks

    All this video did was teach me to take these types of contrarian reviews with a grain of salt, because I have never had any issues even remotely close to anything you’re talking about
