The Chevy SSR was a crazy retro-convertible pickup truck. The Chevrolet SSR never made any sense, and today I’m reviewing this purple SSR to show you why the Chevy SSR is one of the strangest vehicles in years.

You can't fool me, that's a Hot Wheels car.
Ok
Say sike right now. Hot wheels cars are based off of real cars😢
@@aidancessna1548 I can't tell if you're joking or not
Why do people say that some cars look like hotwheels when hotwheels has nothing that looks like it. I only know 2 toy car companies that make ssr scale models and that is maisto and matchbox
@@aidancessna1548 not all of them

Haha i get the joke 😂👍🏼

Fun fact: Matchbox actually did made a Chevy SSR. Google it and you won‘t be disappointed.
Since Doug doesn't know how the SSR came about, I'll fill people in (I worked at the company that designed the car as a software engineer at the time). The SSR wasn't designed by GM, it was designed by American Specialty Cars (AKA American Sunroof Corporation). ASC had invented the moon-roof and the one button convertible, both of which debuted on the Saab 900 in the early 1980's, and eventually became ubiquitous. They changed the name after agreeing to build the BMW Z4 and BMW balking at the company building the Z4 being called American Sunroof Corporation.
In any event, the concept of the SSR was to build a car that would look like the roadsters of the 1930's that had been built by younger drivers on cheaply available 1920's pickups, many of which were Chevys. ASC built the complete prototype using a GMC Envoy platform with a Corvette powertrain, and the car featured a one touch retractable hardtop that disappears into the front of the pickup bed. They sold the concept to GM by parking the prototype in the CEO's driveway, leaving the keys in it. Needless to say he bought the concept.
ASC came out with another prototype, this time for Ford, and it was a 4 seater reworking of the Model A roadster. Every external mechanical part (and the engine flaps on the side of the hood could be opened, making the engine an external part) was chromed, and the car (in Henry's tradition) was black. After trying to market the car to Ford and Ford opting to build the (failed) reworking of the Thunderbird instead, ASC went back to building convertibles for other companies (such as the Toyota Solara convertible) and moon-roofs.
Thanks for the information that’s really cool
Nice post. Would like to see more likes in it.
Thats awesome I didn't know any of this
You would think that he would do some research and homework when reviewing these cars, especially these less common and "quirky" ones...
Thanks for sharing this!
How it came to exist: two engineers collided in the hallway and their papers got mixed up. No one noticed until it was too late.
He said that this is weird... But can he looks at himself near all engineers and creators of that project?

The ssr is an el camino that got a bit carried away with drugs
It's easy to see where it all started. El Camino is just an Impala that got carried away with booze and hooked up with it's sister.
No it’s an el Camino after it quit drugs and it’s like... hey what happened to me? And the Holden Ute is an el Camino that never took drugs and properly aged.

D'oh!
Then, the owner of gm didn’t see the car until the launch, and was shocked when it cost 55000$ dollars, then GM went bankrupt.

Strangely these have held their value relatively well, I'm assuming because of the low production numbers and LS drivetrain.
The only reason it should keep value is for the engine at all
They are weird enough that the people who do want them, really want them.
There is one near me I think for around $20,000-$25,000. NO THANKS.
WatchJRGo The primary value of a vehicle equipped with any variant of LS, lies in the LS. ( the circularity of this comment is by design) With no apologies to Mr
DeCadinet.
Nope, has a 5300 Vortec for '03 and '04 but '05 and '06 are the LS2, only ones on Autotrader I remember are the earlier years, and the reason their value holds so well is because they have INSANELY low mileage usually, lowest was 7K miles at 25K asking price which is pretty much a steal for a reliable convertible car with some decent pickup practicality
Engineers: we are bored

-Doug DeMuro, 2017
I hear that crap in almost every old Chevy I ride in. What the hell is it?
Auto Technica mmhh
Auto Technica when did he say that?
Air door actuators. Whenever the ac/heat, temperature and blend door are adjusted they’ll click because their made of cheap plastics, and will result in failure. I Need to buy three for a 2012 impala. I live in Arizona so the summers are a must for ac, and ones failed so heat doesn’t work on the passenger side for the winter. Fml

I love unique vehicles. It's refreshing to see cool styling among all the generic crap on the road. Kudos to Chevrolet!
Doug, the type of guy to listen to Christmas music in July.
I own one and have to say it is the most polite convertible I have ever ridden in. You can have a conversation at 60+ mph with a great ride. Easy/exit and very comfortable interior. Loads of storage in the box area. Nice ride height on crappy roads. Great build quality. So for those people tired of having to crawl into your sports car and tired of looking at the undersides of every vehicle on the road this is the vehicle for you. Loads of power and very unique attention getter that is going up in value! Grab one before they get too old . I positively love mine!! You haters will never know. Have fun.
I like how Doug never says bad things about the cars he reviews. He usually replaces “idiotic” with “interesting” or another back handed complement word
Evan Crouch
Why crap on a car that's discontinued?
It takes effort to build anything, he does point out the flaws, but also if something that has been designed with thought in mind
using the word 'idiotic' would be unprofessional and immature. i could defnitley see why he wouldnt say idiotic. just imagine him saying a feature on is 'idiotic' on the vehicles he reviews

If only there were a place where I could read more about him...
It was Chevrolet's 50th anniversary to the pickup Chevrolet in1947 they went out and did a survey to the general public and ask them what they would change in1953 they came out with a pickup that was changed styled and more appealing to the public. If you look up the 1953 pick up you'll find out that everything is pretty much the same except for the front split window . One the most noticeable features is the front grill and the truck in 1953 obviously did not have a convertible top and tunnel cover. At that time most trucks were not accepted at people's home they were considered an eyesore, yes I'm sure some of you were thinking the same thing about this one but it's a love-hate relationship with this truck.
This truck was a very fun truck to own and drive it a had pretty much all steel body. It handled 145 miles an hour amazingly. The weight distribution on this truck was great as well, this truck does not seem to have the bed hop like most trucks would.

This car was so unusual and Doug mentioned that the 2005 had a drastic change with the motor, curious what people online said of the difference. Found this quote that the engine was not the only thing improved on 2005:
"Motor Trend, June 2005, in an article about the '05 SSR:
The bottom line is that much of the body shake is gone and the ride is much less punishing, thanks to an extra crossbar under the middle section of the frame and a reinforced X-brace that holds the front of the frame rails directly underneath the engine. The resulting frame rigidity allows for better spring and shock tuning and a more controlled and agile ride."

The car is a long gone but I rate it as my favorite, I currently own an Alfa 4C and an older corvette, not old enough to be worth money. The 2005 SSR did the 1/4 in less than 14 seconds and sounded great. The 5.3 drove on regular which made it cheaper but far less desirable. The SSR is a great investment and a lot of fun. I have owned 10 corvettes and still find the uniqueness of the SSR more fun. As an aside I also owned a Dakota Truck Convertible in the early 90's and that was a blast on far smaller scale.

kind of lame it is overused.
Surprised General Motors didn't badge it as an El Camino.
Daniel Huff Jr. I never thought of that.
Actually there was talks of building a truck-like vehicle based off the Pontiac G8 before the bankruptcy.
Oh please, an el Camino needs the flat 2 square headlights look it was known for. It was a menace
Terry N You mean a ute?
Daniel Huff Jr. the Holden Ute is more of a El Camino
Chevrolet: instead of suing us you can design whatever you want
Papa smurf: smurfy durfy doo!
Man, you could totally smuggle things in that convertible compartment and the police would never find it.
“Alright we couldn’t find anything, you’re free to go. Wait before you go I want to see that convertible go up, it looks cool!”
"Sick of all cars looking the same with the same equipment and the same styling and the same colors..."

This has been a recurring complaint among a lot of people, gear heads and casual drivers alike. There's no personality to them. I'd like to have this sucker for its unique factor, too... and its V8 engine.
Doug the type of guy to collect his belly button lint and place it in a jar titled QUIRKS AND FEATURES.

This and a Prowler are both on my "To Own" list
You filmed this in King’s Park, Springfield Virginia. Several shots were at the elementary school that was a block away from the house I grew up in. In another shot you were on Rolling road and drove past the barber shop that I got my haircuts for almost 20 years. Blowing my mind. You’ve actually done quite a few videos in Northern VA where I grew up. Places like Tyson’s corner, McLean, Great Falls, etc. is that just a coincidence?
I noticed it was in Virginia but didn't know where it was. Glad to see I'm not the only one curious.
I miss VA! Just move to OK after 37 years in Richmond . DID A LOT of work in northern VA, especially McLean
Hey mike he lives in Virginia if I’m not mistaken. I believe in Richmond!
I'm not far from Tyson corner and dc.... Baltimore sux
Mark Peel he lives in California
You kept wondering why they built it and where the design came from. Simply put, they were trying to keep up with the Jones. Chrysler had the Prowler and the PT Cruiser. Ford had the redesigned T-Bird and an upcoming retro styled Mustang. Retro was cool and they wanted a slice of the pie. They had to show that they could do it too. That's how we ended up with the SSR and the HHR.
.......aaaaaaand the Camaro.
And all have a following that loves them.
Terry Hesticles You're correct. I didn't include it because it was 5 years late on the retro redesign scene.
Jason A Silly GM...
Doug the type of guy to play monkey sounds when showing a picture of a Chevy Lumina.

MrHemi4spd the Silhouette
The lumina isn’t really ugly I love the car it’s basic and practical
Everyone will always remember the Lumina as the crap car it was. May it burn in hell for eternity.

My friends Father had one of these. When he passed, my friends Mother asked us to check the battery since it had been sitting for some time. It took us forever to find it underneath the back of the bed. All of us agreed that was the dumbest logistical choice.
