- #105 SEASON TWO: We're finally getting back into the quonset with the HOPE of finishing the project this winter. This week we had to get in and do a major clean up, before we could install much needed overhead storage shelves for the woodworking shop. These were quick and fairly easy to make and put up, at relatively low cost. Huge improvement in terms of storage space for tools. +AMDG

We have the same problem. I tend to work until I'm exhausted or late into the night and end up leaving tools scattered every where. Then after the project is done I go into OCD mode and organize the crap out of everything for days on end. I've been watching, mostly skimming, your videos today because my particular situation will be requiring a move and the one and only real option for me has no garage. So I'll be needing to build something to store my project jeep and to use as a shop. After seeing your video series, holy crap that's a ton of work, especially if you had to build the structure in the first place. The work itself is no big deal. I'm a tinner by trade and have done everything from architectural metal, structural, duct, ect. The amount of time it seems like it will take is pretty daunting as well as the over all cost. I work out of town and travel a lot, so my time is very limited. If you don't mind me asking, how much total time do you think you have into this place? Also, why did you only finish a portion of the interior? Would you recommend going this route to any one else looking for a shop?
Nice looking shelving! Your workshop will be MUCH more productive and useful with the added shelving and organization! We hope you used screws... over the years, we have moved away from using nails and use screws for 100% of our fastening. Holds much better than nails and is MUCH easier to remove in case of a mistake or a new addition!!! LOL!!! Congrats on the grant and the project sounds very interesting!!! Thanks for sharing!
Yes! Screws are the way to go. We use screws for almost everything, but on the shelf face boards the finish nailer was a time saver. We'll pass the congratulations on to Isaac.

Indeed. On the one hand it is a matter of detaching from things we don't need, and then having a proper place for those things we do need. That has been our challenge here. It's like having a kitchen full of necessary cooking supplies, plates, silverware, glasses, etc., but no cabinets, shelves, or counters. As St. Augustine said, "Peace is the tranquility of order."
What are the dimensions of your quonset building. I'm planing a shop for myself.
I should really know this off hand, but it's escaping me. 32' long by about 20+' wide. That length is correct, it's the exact width that I can't recall.

A year later, have you had any issues w condensation getting onto the insulation? About to insulate my building but often water forms inside and drips. Don't want that happening in my shop and getting mold.

Unfortunately, we still only have half of the building finished. Frustrating for us, but too many other projects on the farm have demanded time and resources. What we can say about condensation, is that we finally experienced it in the quonset hut this winter. It snowed, and snow was still on the roof of the building. When we were working out there with the heater on, we did start to get drips of condensation. So if you are in an area where there will be a lot of snow on the building, you might need to think more about managing the condensation. But that is the ONLY time we have seen it in four years. Suppose we could have figured a way to put plastic between the metal and the wood/insulation.
St. Isidore's Farm we don't get much snow in Texas :) but we do get mid 20s for a couple of days a year... When I run a portable heater it is just enough to get above freezing inside... Which causes the condensation. I've enjoyed the series a bunch and look forward to seeing the rest of your stuff

I'll leave a link here of a picture of the type of shelf that I've had good luck with. Similar to your design, but you use chain instead of wood for the hanging supports. You can use any size chain, depending on what size loads you plan on putting on the shelves.

Thanks for the link! Chain would certainly hold more weight than these inexpensive wood strips. Depending on how much we put up there, we might have to switch the supports out for chain.
