"I know" is one of the most Iconic lines in the Movie lol! I am glad Kershner stuck to his gun's on that one, because in the end, he made the best Star Wars Movie in the entire franchise! Kudo's to Mr. Kershner!

But he wasn't involved in Caravan of Courage. :P

That was a great line. Glad they stuck with it. Wish Irvin could have directed Return of the Jedi as well.

@@greenfields1221 oh really? I didn't know that. I wonder how it would have turned out if he directed 🤔

He couldn't anyway, thanks to a falling out between George and the Directors Guild of America during the production of Empire.

Kersh directing wouldn't have been allowed because of the budget and if using the same script it wouldn't be better. Most of Jedi's problems are in the script, the budget and Lucas wanting to wrap things up, close the book on Star Wars. Until the prequel despite claims to the contrary he wasn't going to return to Star Wars.

What a moment they created. Hollywood doesn't seem to care about character and story like this anymore.

I was at that first screening at the Northpoint Theater in San Francisco- interesting seeing a movie that hasn’t finished post production

Wow, I had no idea that much went into coming up with that line. Too bad we can't see all the footage of the alternate lines they tried out first.

This wasn’t really a comedic line though. It was delivered with this grave sense of seriousness and it was perfect. It was an acknowledgement. It’s exactly what was needed.

Totally agree, they had not really made their feelings known, especially her, she had denied she was attracted to him. It would be very important before he died, for her to let him know she did love him.

@@maildotmjk That’s what makes Empire just about the greatest movie of all-time. The attention to detail was insane.

      @@viciousblissvideosI think you're overexaggerating a bit there.

The line works because it's not just a quip - it's darkly comedic and informed by the character. It's gallows humor that allows Han to express his feelings by concealing them and wraps up the arc of Leia denying her attraction to him throughout the movie. It's a brilliantly multi-layered ad-lib by Ford.

I've always thought the very same thing. He went from wanting to keep things serious to wanting slapstick by just one movie. ROTJ also had forced unfunny slapstick with burping aliens and flying teddy bears.

@@white-dragon4424 This was too straight up bleak. Oddly enough, the original line would've been unintentionally hilarious, as Lucas often does.

It was supposed to be funny??? I've never, and I mean NEVER found it funny. I've always found it dramatic and poignant, especially the way he said it with a slight quiver in his voice, but I've never found it funny. It's just what a macho guy would say rather than going all mushy. As for Lucas' line. Terrible, absolutely terrible.
