Thanks mate. Good advice there. As for the comment re piece of junk, well it doesn't matter what we all ride, it's still the same wind. He's probably a start and ride bloke and has the shop do all the work. I've seen what goes on in those shops. I'm with you, do as much as can. Cheers.
Had that same issue with the tail light on my 76 sportster; except the bulb just fell out of the socket. Used a pair of needle nose pliers and bent the socket just right so that the bulb stays in place now.
So many good points in this video, thank you, get a manual, use hand signals, check torques. 💯🔥💚🏁 These bikes have soul and those that keep them on the road are keeping the legacy alive!! taking the time to do all these steps CONSTANTLY! Its a labor of love 😄 good stuff man cheers!
You could make a video or videos of your normal job as a mechanic im sure some of your subscribers would find that interesting. You could take a poll to see if this is something your viewers are interested in
I've thought about it, but it slows the repair process down significantly when the camera comes out, and I need to remain efficient with regards to billable labor hours
Gotta keep them irons on the road man. My turn signals are alway crapping out -so I took them off, now they are never a problem! Also, OCD alert - missing screw on the left side cover - the little triangular shaped one.👍
Tell us is this a standard 83 sportster? Or does it have evo wheels, it looks like a fat bob rear, tell us what it is and what isnt standard? We want to know, so that we can make our own. Thanks.
here to ask about your iron head knowledge! from other older videos. i got a 79 roadster and i am hearing a rattling every time i down shift or idle on the clutch in first like at a red light. i think it might be the compensator, but it doesn't sound right for the videos i have seen/ listened to so far. any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
Double check the clutch adjustment and make sure your primary chain tension is ok, ie the chain isn't rattling around or slapping inside of the cover. Hard to say really, goofy noises are hard to figure out via text! Good luck
@@buttcrackcycles just checked/adjusted the chain and replaced the tensioner shoe as it was starting to look a little dug out. but the rattle abides,as you know well with bikes this old once i figure out this problem it will just be so i can focus more on the next one. i'll be checking the valves next. checking everything before the compensator as i finally got the primary to stop leaking only last week and don't want to break whatever magic is holding that sealed. Thanks for your time!
@@isaiah3127 yeah that is not right. There's an issue, maybe fuel leak, maybe an intake leak so the carb has to be really rich to overcompensate. Choke or enricher stuck on? What carb is on it? The S&S stuff always seems to run rich
@buttcrackcycles i bought a 1965 XLCH. I noticed that the choke did have to stay on for it to keep running. So I cleaned it out and adjusted the idle speed, and it was able to stay running. Another problem we've run into is that the damn thing has virtually no power past 60 mph. So 4th gear is pretty much useless. We actually put a brand new Mikuni vm 38mm with .370 main jet. And from what I heard, that's already pretty big. But on both the old and new bikini carb. It would spit out smoke out the air filter when you'd get a combustion kick.
@buttcrackcycles I knew something was up with this bike. When I checked the spark plugs, it had black soot. So we started at the carb. But I'm starting to think this issue goes deeper.

It's also a good idea to check cylinder base nuts.
That's a good one to add to the list for sure!
Old bikes are more work to keep on the road . I owned an old guzzi 850 it was a constant stream of odd jobs needing doing, but it was worthwhile.

Yup, I saw that, I found a screw this morning for it

I so want this t-shirt!
Nice shirt
How many miles do you get to the gallon? My ironhead seems to suck gas like it's about to die of dehydration.
This bike is usually in the 50-55mpg range which I'm happy with.
@@buttcrackcycles ill be lucky if I can go 50 miles without running dry. What the heck is going on?

Those are LED lights and that is why they hyper flash.
Yup but the important thing is they're actually flashing at all now lol
