- Rolf Harris singing Laughing Policeman ... sorry about the cracked vinyl ... a mate sent this to me and had no idea where the recording is from any one know?
The Laughing Policeman is originally a music hall song by Charles Jolly aka Charles Penrose first recorded in1922 however the music and melody are taken from The Laughing Song by George W. Johnson recorded in approximately 1901. It has sold over a million copies. Its popularity continued into the 70s, as it was often asked for on the BBC Radio show Junior Choice.
Do you need lyrics?

Awesome. Nice work.
Growing up hearing the Charles Penrose version on my mum's vinyl, used to be a bit freaked out by that almost maniacal laughter.
Happy Days!
Lovely video
Good ol' Rolf!
Yeah, good ol' Rolf. The child molesting pervert.
Actually Uploader ( Rikkyhardo ) the crackling in the vinyl makes it sound even better so for this i thank you!
nice one...as Rolf would say..
Thanks for the nice, awesome comments folks ... ho ho ho ha ha ha haaaw haaaaw
Reminds me of the Chinese version of this song. What a laugh!
I'll bet you don't think the police are so funny now do you Rolf.
@JBartlett09 If you come to Teignmouth, especially, you'll finda coppers of that description. Is it any wonder I get on with them so well?
The laughing nonceman
I think the childrens laugh in the chourus ruined it
You can find it on You tube Charlie Jollie Penrose since 1922.
Rolf's voice over at the beginning says they were filming in Bath, so I guess this is from one of his 80's TV series in the UK
Can anyone remember this song but not R H singing it?
Charles Penrose
Nor laughing now

Charlie Penrose recorded it first in the early 1920's I think. That might be the version youre thinking of.
I guess the Police are not so jolly now.
@LeBexstar I thought so! :)
Is Rolf Harris Australian?
