I’ve read many of Cixin Liu’s short stories and my favorite is Mountains, about the long history of an alien race that must overcome a millennia of struggle before they can even reach the same starting point of our own civilization.

The one about the robot rocks was kinda confusing to be honest
@JohnSiu absolutely. Liu's story to me was about how humans would cope under such incredible stress. Even when the rebels tied the leaders and scientists up, the leaders forgave them and said that they should have expected them to go insane. The short story is a human story whereas the film was mash up of standard Sci Fi tropes.
I loved most of Liu Cixin's short stories, special mention for Devourer which devastated me when I read it, only for me to read Poetry Cloud 2 years later & be delighted about how things actually turned out. Also, after reading Death's End, reading Ode to Joy was such an hopeful funny little piece of candy to soothe my angst.
Nonetheless, Devourer, if one can skip through "science" and get to the "fiction", is one of the best little pieces of philosophy I've seen in years (aside from Remembrance.., which is anything but little)
Thanks to you i have listened to the whole Three Body Problem series, i must get this on audiobook now (also Hyperion ^^) I really like how you highlight book passages, main themes, and the way you present them in a very suspensful kind of way without compeletly spoiling the story completely (you background music is well chosen). I haven't read The Wandering Earth but now that it's brought to my attention I'm definitely picking it up. He's similar to Adrian Tchaikovsky in that respect. Love hardcore scifi books.
Agree that a Hyperion adaptation would be awesome. Another book I'd love to see made into a show would be Niven & Pournelle's "The Mote In God's Eye." Great sci-fi concept, riveting action/adventure, and a large ensemble of engaging, relatable characters.
Cixin Liu's Ball lightning was good, had to describe, but interesting. Of Dinosaurs and Ants was fun, but abit to light. Supernova Era started as a gut punch of emotion, but lost focus and felt all over the place by the end to me. Would still recommend it though.
I saw the film adaptation and I've got to say that was absolute piss, especially looking at how Tencent adapted 3 body. Now the latter is how it should be done (perhaps minus adverts for TVs involving the story's themes, placed in the ad break haha)

Amazing work as always! You should definitely do a video on more short stories by Liu Cixin, such as The Devourer, The Mountain and For the benefit of Mankind!
This reminds me of a very old short story called 'a bucket full of air' ( I think that's what it's called, by the same guy that wrote metropolis) Only there, earth had been pulled out of its orbit by another planet that had come crashing into our solar system from outside. Since it was written so long ago, it's kind of hard to believe some of the things would work. (Like how the father of the storyteller made their shelter for example) but it's still quite an interesting story. Seems people have been wondering what would happen if earth moved away from the sun like this for many years.

So I had my own sci-fi story that has a very similar premise to Wandering Earth, with the whole early Sun death concept. I was planning on ditching it since I thought it sounded too ridiculous a concept, but if this story is able to handle the concept well, then I guess why can't I? I'll have to give this a read, it sounds super interesting.
The most fascinating thing I find about Liu’s work is how being raised in a very different cultural milieu from my own (American, born at the end of the 70s), leads him to envision a very different sort of human future than I could. In China it seems there’s a cultural expectation that the human race will come together and act as a unit when faced with massive existential crises. That we will collectively act like ants in a hive, putting the survival of all humankind and the Earth itself over our individual goals. I think the reality is that there’s no way humanity would ever commit to multigenerational engineering projects on that scale. And even if begun, they would fall apart within a few years due to graft, corruption, and resistance from the loudly ignorant majority of the planet. Hopefully I don’t live long enough to find out 😅
I agree. As an American, I see the selfish ignorance of those in leadership positions as well as those of the general population. It's a sad disappointing realization that our country is unable to come together towards survival let alone a common goal. Last time Americans came together as one was unfortunately the tragedy of 9/11.
The thing about eastern (and chinese in particular) philosophies is that they don't really expect people to come together by default, accepting that individuality people used to in the west as matter of fact, yet nonetheless they consider such collective unification of goal and purpose as the only way how individual humans can actually survive and thrive. Regardless of what human beings are, their only reql strength is in their collective effort, and this notion is exact theme visible through most of Liu's works.
The rebellion about mistrusting the government and scientists happens after a few hundred years in the books but in reality it would've happened well before any engines were built.
As soon as l get close to finishing a book you inspired me to read ... you have another , thank you , have you ever thought of speaking at high schools or colleges ? You would be awesome and we desperately need some inspiration for these lost , listless lot.

Why didnt they just use much smaller engines and push earths orbit out to somewhere just beyond mars's orbit? That is about where the new habitable zone for our suns red giant stage is meant to be at - though it is so much bigger it would be a lot cooler and thus earth would need to be relatively close. No way the sun would engulf the whole solarsystem- it doesnt have the mass for that. And- it would stay as a relatively stable red giant for a few 10s of millions of years! Unless the book made up some wierd reason the sun wasnt going through its normal cycle there is no reason they had to leave. I know scif-fi books have lots of made up fictional elements ofcourse- but they need to get the science bits right too!
I imagine they got to alpha centauri and some 4 yr old kid was like "wait, why didn't we just move the earth into our original sun's new goldylock zone?" And the whole planet, or what ever is left of it, collectively face palms.
I agree about Hyperion. I also like the world of the old video game franchise Starsiege Tribes. Specially the more fleshed out world in Vengance would be cool.

Seeing a video about William Hope Hodgeson's The Night Land would be pretty cool, a nice mix of cosmic horror and dying/dead sun scifi with a lot of spinoff stories by other authors
Read hyperion because you mentioned it in a dune video. Binged the entire series during school last year and it was so good. Amazing continuity and world building.
The sad part is, I could absolutely see a conspiracy theory about the sun not being in danger of expanding arising under these conditions. Whenever a tragedy happens, there will always be a conspiracy theory denying it happened at all.
This reminds me of two previous science fiction tv stories: the Tenth Planet (Mondas), that was Hartnel's last Doctor Who story before regeneration; Star Maidens, an Anglo German tv collaboration that had a race ruled by women leaving Proxima Centauri, by accident, eventually taking up an orbit outside the orbit of Neptune.
I 100% agree with you on how cool an adaptation of Hyperion would be... Man it is such a prime example of a series of novels being way too perfect for it to be adapted, irritating as hell. Such low hanging fruit that no one (maddeningly) hasn't simply picked. I guess I should watch apple TV's foundation but I'm very hesitant...
