Welcome to Marillion! They've been around since the early eighties. A lot of their music suits an orchestra, so they've done a few "adaptations". But, they normally don't write songs with one. If you like the guitar solo try "Sugar Mice" and "Easter". They have a very deep catalogue.
I've been there at the ''Vereeniging' Nijmegen-Netherlands, also with friends. Smashing concert, 2 times Tivoli-Utrecht-Netherlands without Friends. Invisible man, with video, and Steve comes up later, beautiful! The Great Escape, my favorite, and so manymore great songs. He performes every song with so much power and dedication, his heart is in it, brilliant!
They have done one album, which was a redo of songs with orchestra. They did a tour with them and included them in the Marillion weekend event in 2017. Their albums from the eighties to 2016 are just the band. You might enjoy Gaza live.
The song is more of a realisation / reminder that those who gain stardom are still like everyone else, even though they could be on top of the world like a flag on a mountain . They get high on their status, and get dethatched from reality (staring on clouds with no view of below) but still feel like fakes under their perfectly restrained image. A warning that you may lose control and crash out (unable to miss) even if you see it coming. You end up in darkness - the space around the stars.
This was a special concert "With Friends From The Orchestra" is something they do on occasion, but their studio albums are just the 5 of them. '82-'88 was a different singer, "Fish", who went solo and they brought in Steve Hogarth. This was from their first album with him, "Season's End". Check out Neverland from them, Live is always better. Marillion - Neverland (live) 2004.
Scrolling through your reactions looking for twenty one pilots, but had to check this out. It's been a very, very, long time since I listened to Marillion. First heard Kaleigh back around '84, but I haven't really listened to them since around 2000. I don't remember this song, not sure if I baught the album back then.
The original isn't as 'symphonic', but yeah, it has a ton of keyboards that give it that feeling. I grew to love Hogarth eventually, but I'm definitely a 'Fish' fanboi (their original vocalist). Forgotten Sons would be a great reaction for the old-school fans, or Warm Wet Circles - I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to that and lyrically, it's fantastic.
This was a one off with the orchestra. Seems to be a thing nowadays. Please check out Anathema - Untouchable part 1, which is another current prog band at a live gig with the orchestra. It'll blow you away. Marillion have two very distinct eras. Pre and post Fish, who was their original vocalist, but left the band after the 4th album. I would highly recommend the live version of Script for a Jester's Tear from the very early days. This is great, but so is that. Decades apart. Fantastic stuff.
Not a one off as they did a full tour with the orchestra inc. In Praise of Folly in 2019, including two nights at the Royal Albert Hall. The orchestra also appeared at the 2017 Marillion Weekend and this recording was of the first time they played the Royal Albert Hall in October 2017.
Most (not all) Marillion fans love The Space, but it might not be the best for a Newbie to start with. Maybe have a listen to Estonia, Go (live at the RAH), You're Gone or Easter. Then maybe move onto The Great Escape, This Strange Engine or Gaza. Always try for a live performance because this band are just sublime on stage
Marillion is a rare band that seems to sound even better live than on the original album. Their emotions and feeling come across better somehow.
Watching Marillion live is an uplifting experience. The singer, Steve Hogarth, expresses so much emotion in every song. Thanks for the reaction.
Welcome into Marillion's world ! When you taste it, you'll be nailed in it forever !
Wow, not many people reacting to Marillion. The Space is one of their better songs after Fish left the band.
what a band....love them

The original version also had violins but not quite as much.
...albeit keyboard strings
One of the best bands
Good choice, especially this version!
