Just finished seeing this movie now. I thought it was really good. I am a fan of Edward James Olmos. It made me cry. All the cast did a great job here and you really feel the emotions running wild! Proud Chicana here 🇲🇽 🇺🇸
Interesting fact. I’ve been to Gonzalez, Tx. The jail house is still there, although it is in disrepair and they’re trying to save it. But you can take tours. The court house is there too just down from the jail. It is still in great condition. This is will be my new movie in rotation and I plan to watch it again.
Fine movie. Sidestepping the spoiler you avoided, I shared the following. Your review likely came up on my YT home page because I recently looked up the story and film. I recalled the particular circumstances that gave rise to the Cortez manhunt when I came across a police body cam video on YT. As the body cam video played, one sensed where things were heading. Essentially, history had repeated itself (as to the trigger event; there was no manhunt) a century or so later. Thus, “revisionist” western or not, it is a cautionary tale. Thanks.
Great movie. I've used it to teach continuing ed courses to interpreters -- I'm an interpreter myself-- because there are at least three distinct interpreter characters in this movie, and as you said, it all turns on a failure to get a single word right.
I was today years old when I found out this is my great grandfather. I’m glad the rest of the world can share this great story like my family did with me
He's my great great grandpa..
@@Fulz- seriously than we are related

This movie caught my eye upon release, particularly since it starred Edward James Olmos, who has always (to me) been a bankable actor. When he attaches his name to a project, I take note, so I will add this movie to my list.
Thank you!
This youtube channel is, highly underrated;)
thank you very much.
I noticed the movie has a 💯 rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though I'm not into westerns that info caught my attention. Highest rating I've seen on any film... must be good.
these older movies have strange ratings on RT, though. RT pulls from what's available, and if there are only a few, and they are all glowing, then it's going to be 100%. That may be far from the evaluation of the movie when it came out, among contemporary critics, or even of all working critics today. Just a caution when looking at that 100.
That's a movie of nobody's heard of it's one of the Best westerns I've ever seen which is shocking it doesn't have a lot of gunplay for Western
Just saw this movie astounding great wonderful and heart wrenching and James Almos was brilliant
Yes, I saw this movie on HBO or Showtime way back when. At one time I recorded it on VHS but have since lost it. I agree with you that this movie should be on top fifty lists of great western movies. I wish those in the know would promote this movie, because to me it is a classic, In fact I just finished reading a list of the top 100 western classic films and this one was not on it. Got a feeling that the person(s) who compiled the list probably never heard of it. Sad
I chanced upon the Historical Marker in Karnes County and then searched out the Ballad and then found the movie. I hope to watch the 2nd half tonight, for I too am enjoying it. That sure ain't South Texas terrain ☹️. I liked your review. Thanks and God bless you.
I Just watched this film for the first time tonight on the TCM channel. I liked it
I I remember watching it when it first came out . Edward almost did a great part. To me it was one of the Great Western movies I seen. I hope I get to see it on TV. I am Mexicano. Gilbert Castillo from Fremont California.
amazing film, saw it at a film festival in El Paso.
My family is from Karnes County, TX. Gregorio Cortez killed Sheriff W.T. Morris. When I was a boy in the early 50s Morris's son, Harper Morris, was also Sheriff of Karnes County. I knew him. My mother had known him all her life. Significantly, Harper never carried a gun, knowing how packing a gun had gotten his father killed. He was an interesting character.
Interesting I meet Gregorio Cortez stepdaughter !
The real Gregorio Cortez is my grandmas first cousin.
Good job again Josh! Interestingly, I just watched this last month! I didn't like the sound mix of the movie, it seemed a bit loud at times. Olmos is generally a good actor, but in this film I found him to be a bit too stoic and emotionless, especially when you consider what he was up against. The film does have a good supporting cast and some of the scenery and landscapes were wonderful, but overall, I thought the film came up a bit short for me.
thank you.
