    Checkerboarding Swarm Control - Swarm Management Technique - Will It Work??
    Checkerboard Swarm Control
    Want to know how to stop bees swarming? Have you ever entered the apiary and thought NO - my bees have swarmed? Want an easy method to stop bees swarming? Do you want a swarm control method that means you don’t have to do any inspections?
    Checkerboarding as a swarm management technique is highly controversial. I’ll be upfront - I don’t know if it works, but I am going to document my findings throughout the season.
    Hopefully this will answer the question of how to stop bees swarming.
    Checkerboarding as a swarm management technique doesn’t involve placing frames of foundation in between frames of brood. It relys on alternating two supers worth of frames of stores and frames of foundation. The idea is that the bees are otherwise engaged in drawing wax foundation when it comes to swarm season. But I can see many flaws with this process. It will be fun to see if it works.

    We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
    We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
    Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

    We supply F1 Mated Buckfast and Jolanta Queens throughout the season. The UK Mated Jolanta Queens are reared using genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

    Interesting one this, definitely keep watching and I’m definitely having a go at a demaree split this year

    Hi Laurence! Very interesting method. To me it looks like a variation/evolution of the Oskman method, created by an Argentinian beekeeper called Manuel Oskman. It basically consists in having a deep super at the bottom for the brood and a shallow honey super at the top (not for harvesting, but as storage for the bees), without the queen excluder. With this method, the queen will expand the brood nest when she needs space to lay eggs at the top, but just for those periods of massive nectar flow, as she "doesn't like" shallow supers, so it's intended to auto-regulate and avoid swarming. Also, it's intended to save time to the beekeeper, who just watching the outside of the hive will decide if it needs to be inspected or it's okay. It's a controversial method, because even when it makes sense, some beekeepers say that it promotes swarming, while others say it works fine for them. I'll try it this season and I'll decide if it works for me. As I said, the one you are showing in this video is similar, but it adds even more space. Thanks for sharing.

    Interesting! Sounds like some sort of brood control method. Around here some keepers use the Renson method, it is a bit different but they are aiming for the same effect i think, lots of bees collecting honey because of less brood and big high hives(that are totally unmanagable i think)
    But always fun too experiment and try something new 👍

    Hi Laurence, thanks for your great videos. We have flow hives, did demaree splits 2 weeks ago (after watching your video). Now the 1st day of spring over here in Australia. So we can't do this checker boarding with the flow hive, so what else can I do to help prevent swarms?

      Flow hive is the worst hive to have even compared to AZ hive. Sell it and use Illinois medium only.

    Interesting. Even before this video I've been planning to build some sort of safe steps or platform as I struggled last year with uniting a couple of colonies and got horribly stung, as being short, I couldn't lift a brood box high enough to go on top!!! Perhaps I just need a crane!

    I am giving this a go🤔😊 I have the swarmiest bees and always end up with a huge amount of nucs to sell🙄 or keep and I have more hives than I really need apparently 🤔 My🤞 are crossed. Thanks for that one😀

    so by the time the next year comes the supa of stores that was left on would that not of been already used by the bees ??

    Haha well i looked out for this and here it is. I wonder if you could do this on a super thats on the hive or would it too much at this time of year (thats how it looks on the illustration

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому

      That's exactly what you are supposed to do, apparently. I have none like that so I improvised 😉

      I put most of mine on double brood this year. Very tempting to experiment on one. - plus i have a few boxes of drawn comb ready too.

    If you get a big temperature drop will the excess space not be too much for the colony to keep warm enough?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому +1

      Maybe - just following the book. There are numerous questions I have about the strategy

    • @won2winit
      @won2winit 2 роки тому

      Guess they have tried a few variations before putting it in writing.....let's see how it goes.
      Have plenty of drawn frames but none with enough stores, so maybe next season.....

    I think you also need frame spacers on the frames either side of the DN1 to get the beee space right or use the extra wide spacers on your DN1s.

      You get to know roughly what will work in terms of spacing. I tend go eye up a lot of them.

    I have checkerboard it does work if you do it in time but if you let him get really big and they thinking about it you can check a board but you got to keep her closed eye on them for about a month

    Laurence if you get a chance watch a video by Duck River Honey. He recently posted a video about another Beek in Tennessee who checkerboards a completely different way using queen excluders. Both methods are interesting.

      It definitely worked on my one colony. I'm gonna have to try it again and widen the pool to check it wasn't a fluke

      @@BlackMountainHoney Many thanks for your reply. Last year was my first season beekeeping and your videos have been invaluable and inspiring! I followed your direction on preemptive demaree and it worked fantastically! I might try checkerboarding on the one colony I have with a super of stores on it once my copy of John White and co’s book arrives. Looking forward to the weather getting better and getting my nukes from you in a few months time! (Preordered!)

      @jamestolfree7607 Thanks James. I'm glad the videos are useful. The demaree is a method I can certainly vouch for. It works very well as a preemptive swarm management technique 👌 👏

    You don't have to use a queen excluder let them bees build their nest and then put your box on top for your honey once they make the honey band and the queen will not cross the honey

    If youre working with deeps there is no need to do 2 of them, one is enough. Read about this at beesource, Walt Wright. It is worth at least a read in my opinion.

    My Bro, Checker boarding works because it severly retards the bees for a whole season. This will cost you in harvest time

    if it was this easy we would all be doing it by now and we would be all millionaires, lol
