  • This is an honest look at the Chase Tone Secret Preamp pedal, which I bought myself earlier this year and has now become my go to pedal for creamy Johnson / Gilmour esque lead tones. To my surprise, I found it works exceptionally well on its own, just using a little bit of drive from the amp.
For more information on the secret preamp pedal, you can visit the Chase Tone website chasetone.com/...

Nice playing. It's a great pedal. It's definitely a secret sauce sort of thing.

Thanks! Indeed it is, I wonder if I’ll be kicked out the secret pre amp club now I’ve talked about it!

I know these journeys you’re talking about. They’re addictive. I went way too far with it. I mean, literally up to the point where I only slept like 1,5 to 2 hours per day, but not in bed. Those 1,5 to 2 hours were small moments when I was lying on the couch, iPhone in my hand, and then just sliding into a comatose state, sometimes for not more than half a minute, sometimes 20 minutes and sometimes an hour until a shock went through my body, waking me up again, lying in the most uncomfortable positions, still holding my smartphone, reading glasses still on…. and all these mini moments of sleep added up gave me this average of 1,5 to 2 hours of ‘sleep’ per day. This began with an average of 4 hour nights 6 years ago and it only got worse from there. Until a month ago I indeed had a period of 7 weeks that I didn’t sleep at all (in a normal way - just the ‘2’ hours I already explained).
Needless to say that this wasn’t good for so many reasons. And it will probably take months, if not a year, to fully recover from it.
HOWEVER…. (and I hate to say it), I learned so many things about pedals and other music related stuff, because that was basically the only things I would search for. And I did find some gems. I’m addicted to gain pedals (mostly in the category ‘mild overdrives’) and what I would call the opposite of that, namely an unnamed category of the craziest pedals to create all sorts of spacey soundscapes. When one of the less crazy pedals in this second category came out (the Strymon Cloudburst) I had to have it. I immediately knew what I needed (NEEDED!!!) it for. I had the same thing with the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Waters and the Hologram Microcosm. I still don’t have the last one and that’s driving me nuts.
But being the gain pedal addict that I am (by the way, just to clarify, I don’t just like every gain pedal. I’m looking for something that sounds absolutely amazing and that stands out from most other pedals in all sorts of ways), I am pleasantly surprised by this one. A really good sounding gain pedal is hard to find, but when you find one that doesn’t only sound great, but is also this extremely easy to use, then that’s a huge bonus for me. I like it a lot!
I’m sorry for the long story. I had a relapse, so I didn’t sleep at all this night. The alarm went off half an hour ago, so I need to hurry. But this, the endless typing and not being able to stop once I began typing after I’ve been awake for too long is one of the things that comes with it. I’m working on it.
    Again, terribly sorry.
I just wanted to say I loved your video. Thanks! 🧡😊

Don’t apologise at all. I think this is something that a lot of guitar player, or even musos in general go through at some point! Sounds like my rabbit hole wasn’t quite as bad as yours but I still dissappear for a couple of days at a time when I find a new bit of kit that i think might add to my ‘ToneHenge’ - if you like overdrives then I have a video coming up soon on the Brelliott ‘TODP’ - fantastic bit of kit that I’ve used in a few shorts but have a full video coming soon, it’s not your average OD and that thing lives on my board as well… when we’re not using it for recording / videos here. Thank you for the kind words on the video as well!

Thanks, and I should have talked about this in the video (I’m still learning!) I have it sat before my 2 overdrive pedals, which are the last things to run into the front of the amp. I have all my time and modulation effects run into the S/R loop, so there’s only this and the OD’s going through the front door as such. Kyle at Chasetone says it can sit pre or post OD, I think i played around and was a bit happier with it sat in front.
