If I had teleportation abilities, your backyard would be one of the first places I visit. Don't shoot 😅

Hey man! sorry to bomb you with questions but your collection is so impressive i just have to know some things
I'm curious what type of nutrients do you use and how often do you feed ?
do you start your seedlings indoor and then transfer them outdoor ?
Do you have them in full sun or how many hours of sun do they get a day?
have you ever had a bad infestation? Lost a few to mealy bugs and scale and it spread like wild fire
do u have any tips to help bugs ?
Do you recommend growing in greenhouses ?
how often do you get monstrose's and crest from seed?
    and whats ur germination rate?
I started writing my questions down bc I had so many

ill use liquid fertilisers like seasol, powerfeed, gogo juice which will go on every couple months maybe at peak growing time ill fertilise them once every 2 weeks. but this season i think i may have liquid fed them maybe 3 times. and at the start of the growing season i will throw down gypsum, insect frass, mineral rock dust, volcanic rock dust, blood and bone, and anything else i have at my disposal like a handfull of cow manure if ive got it or worm castings. and then i will water it in with a liquid fertiliser that i mentioned above. and for the rest of the season will only liquid fertiliser every now and again. i dont water or liquid fertilise if they have had heaps of rain.
i have mostly germinated my seeds in a takeaway container indoors. but they can be germinated outside as long as the lid is on for humidity and in full shade. but once they have germinated and shown they arent getting any fatter or not growing as fast i will give them more light by either moving them outside in the shade or if already outside then just move into a better position for more reflective light and keep moving untill they can handle half a day of full sun.
so i have seedlings all over the place. the more sun the healthier and faster they grow but you gotta ease them into it, take notice of how they react to the light you give them and when they dont seem so stressed move them into more light. so it really varies in my backyard some get sun for 70% of the day, some get 30% and some are in full shade but get decent reflective light. if i could choose i would let them get all the morning sun up untill the sun starts to go down and afternoon i would want them to be in shade but heaps of reflective light i find they can get burnt mainly from direct afternoon sun.
I have had Scale insects and still occasionally find them its not as bad anymore and it never really got out of control because as soon as i knew i had them i treated them with various things but the main thing ive noticed that works is imidicloprid. high doses. and so they definitely are not growing rapidly like they were. i plan to continue to treat with imidicloprid until i dont see any signs of scale for atleast 1 year. cause ive seen what scale can do if you let them get hold. other than that nothing major, only small damage from caterpillars which i pull off when i see them, snails that dont do too much damage. i had a small infestation of some sort of mites which went away when i used diatomacious earth sprinkled on top. so ive never had anything get out of control because i try to check them for any problems quite regularly. ive never lost any to bugs. fungal infections are worse for me. as it gets quite humid when it raines. takes a few days to dry up sometimes. but when it does dry up so do the fungal infections. i also treat with phosphorous acid same time i do imidicloprid which at times is every 2 weeks. and that is by watering cans to the soil. but you will never get an entire collection free of fungal spots, its nature. tips to help with bugs and fungal issues, keep the plants as healthy as possible with soil. if you give the plant everything it needs to fight things off it should be fine. so good soil, access to nutrients. not too much water which you can counter with having well draining soil and aerated soil using pumice, plenty of sun because fungal infections dont wanto be in sun aswell as some pests dont want direct sun, it also dries up the area and stops from being humid. also air flow, not only in the soil but around the top for fungal infections and pests to be prevented. i noticed when i found scale on one specimen it had no scale from the outside but it was leaning up against a fence and so the part up against the fence where it is a lot more humid, no sun and no wind had heaps of scale on it. so good soil, sun, airflow.
i havent grown anything in a green house i have had seeds in tent but thats about it. if you dont have room outside or its too cold. go for it i would if i couldnt grow outside. aswell what ive noticed is you can control your environment when in a greenhouse if its too humid have your fans on and so on. also have noticed from other peoples pictures it seems you can get them looking a lot cleaner and prettier in a tent/greenhouse. i will one day grow some in a greenhouse.
Monstrose and Crests really come down to the parents where the seeds came from so i find a lot of trojan Llama seeds come out with some mutants, so in a batch of seeds from trojan Llama maybe 30% are mutants but it really varies. there will be some species and out of 10 fruits you may not get one mutant so it really does vary and comes down to the parents but i get a few mutants here and there.
Germination rate comes down to the freshness of the seed if the fruit was picked too early they might not be viable or too late also may not germinate and even if they were picked at the perfect time if the seeds have been incorrectly stored then they germination rate could be low aswell as for the age of the seeds. if everything is done the right way i am usually getting 90%+ germination rate. i hope that answers your questions haha. feel free to ask anymore.

@@CurtsCactus awesome thank you for the response I just got mine in a small greenhouse I've been acclimating them into the sun and I think most of my seedlings are acclimated they started turning a bit yellow so I put them back in greenhouse
Now the new growths dark green so I have them in the sun most of the day
I've noticed new spines on my peruvianus and there so freaking beautiful this is my first time I plan on. Closed pollination breeding
Ive heard coconut 🥥 🌊 water works good for pupping and I guess there's this new cream called 6-bap that has a hormone or something makes them instantly pup lots of ppl getting good results have u heard of 6-bap?
And ty for the info I'm def gonna stock up on some fertilizers I wanna try kelp and fish fert I hear aquarium water works really good

@@TrustTheThorn oh yea excellent just keep doing that with the seedlings, keeping an eye on the colour and how they react to the position they are in. And eventually they will be able to handle full sun all the time. And that's when the real growth comes, as long as they get plenty of water and nutrients.
The new spines are always very exciting that will be good when you get a proper cross pollination.
I have heard of coconut water being good for pupping never have I used it though. 6bap I've used and have had mixed results I think if you use enough it does work. But if you use too much you can stunt the plant because it's putting all its energy into endless pups. So can just experiment with it. I haven't used it in ages but maybe I'll do another experiment. Also I've heard it can really mess your body up with hormones or something so watch out how you handle it don't ingest any or get on skin.

Dude that’s so much water that you guys probably got. Epic collection as usual!! Have you lost any of your columnar cacti to root rot? I am only starting to gather a trichocereus collection because I find they’re hard to kill by overwatering compared to many other types of succulents.

    • @CurtsCactus
      @CurtsCactus  3 місяці тому +1

At the beginning yes but not anymore. Very rarely will I get root rot, only seedlings will get root rot and occasionally lose some to it as well. But if they aren't strong enough to fight it then it's probably a good idea not to grow them. Give them the right conditions and they will fight almost anything off. Thanks heaps!

I quite like them. I like the red/orange tipped ones I like how many spines they usually have very nice species in my opinion.

@@CurtsCactus I’d love to see them hybridized with some of the more “glamerous” strains. Like sharxx for example.
