I watched this show when it first aired and now on UA-cam. Nobody but these guys I believe stood on they’re feet the whole show, I think Lenny Clarke was choppin lines for everybody back stage.
This episode is a prime example of why I believe talent doesn’t always equate to success. The most successful comic in that whole lineup is undoubtedly Kevin Hart. But, is he the most talented? Hell no. Patrice is, and by a wide margin. He’s a better standup comedian, he’s funnier in observation humor, satirical humor, writing, across the board. If he were still with us, he’d still be overlooked. But look at what happened they called out Kevin’s phony soliloquy and called him a fraud. Real does recognize real. And the true artist will almost always be overlooked when you have those so quick to “sellout”.
Yep and Patrice always had different levels to his thought process which made me ultimately start thinking differently and here’s kevin with his dumb little arguments. No one was on board bc yes they were phony.
If you knew anything patrice actually took kevin under his wig thats why he was on this show. I think its fitting kevin is the most successful look who taught him
Kev's whole schtick is that he's a cute little black man that isn't funny, that was way more marketable than Patrice's honest humor since the PC cops were running rampant in the 2000's and couldn't handle his "attitude" problem. Even though Kev is successful and famous now, at least he acknowledges that he wouldn't be anything had it not been for Patrice and Keith and Colin
Kevin is ok. He had good work ethic and business sense. Not to mention he was like 24 here. There have been far worse famous comics. Patrice was a great talker. Standup was cool. He hated the game and sabotaged himself multiple times either due to morals or in some cases just because.
I thought that Kevin Hart just became PC when he started gaining mainstream fame but his jokes here prove that he's always punked out when it comes to serious issues

I’d give up teaching and being exhausted in exchange for making millions making terrible movies and selling out in less then half a second.

Just speculation like I said, but it’s not hard to see many other comedians from the time NOT wanting to stand next to Patrice and have to try to be funny with him (of course you’re not going to be funnier) because it’s asking the impossible. I think norm knew about Patrice and loved his stand up, but I’d suspect he was all set squaring off with him recreationally. Plus norm was a classy guy who stepped aside for many up and comers. Tough crowd was a core group of comics with a rotation of guests promoting movies shows etc. propel on the rise. Norm respected the grind and knew even then he didn’t need to prove anything to anyone. I agree I think norm would have been a great addition to the unique mix on tough crowd.

He respected him and liked him, and would've been respected as well, and funny. Plenty of comics did well on this show without doing the insult back and forth thing.
That was the point of it though if it was organized it would’ve never worked these guys worked great in unorganized off the cuff environments the only one that worked out in that other environment was kevin hart and he’s out of his league amongst all these guys besides Norton
