  • Longyearbyen, Svalbard (Spitsbergen) 12:30pm on Sunday 8th of March, 2020. Visitors and locals farewell winter and the polar night for the return of sunlight after almost 4 months without its rays. 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Svalbard Treaty. Longyearbyen is approximately 1300km from the North Pole.

    It sure looks like Hawaii to me, where tourists are out on the beach enjoying the sun. Same thing. :/

    Quite an interesting place. Been researching Svalbard for quite some time now, but surprisingly there’s very little information about this place.
    Was trying to go work there, since the place requires no visa and jobs in general there are interesting.
    From what I’ve seen economy there is tourism focused?

      Yes, coal mining is declining substantially, so tourism and the university (UNIS) are the main employers besides the government I'd say. Or at least, were until Covid-19 struck! And no visa for many nationalities, it's true, but housing is the biggest issue for newcomers.
