The counting pennies comment at the end is what gets me. Of all the major pro sports, MLB owners collectively seem to step over a dollar to pick up a dime (or whatever the phrase is). I really think the ring leader (even if they spend) in a lot of the general policy over the past decade is Jim Crane.

I suppose that we fans don't have a right to their financial numbers, but there is no reason to believe them either if they aren't transparent (at least there is Atlanta). All you can go on is what they are WILLING to do. This is a source of frustration for fans along with not really ever knowing what happened in contract negotiations (like with Mookie Betts). He says one thing (and then something else years later like last week), the team has their side, others speculate or list a source. With all of this, sometimes you just never find out, or find out years later. Heck, Clemens and John McNamara always disagreed about Game 6 of the 1986 WS.

I got into an argument with someone saying the Yankees were cheap because they "only" spent $367 million on payroll. Give me a fuckin break.

They do have a point with the scrooge index....to a point. Is the payroll listed the actual cost to the team? Been in business all my life and whatever payroll is add 20% for federal and taxes owed by the employer. Benefits? That has to be figured in also. I'm sure A.J.'s info that someone told him was just from that persons knowledge, which can be very limited. No company opens up their books unless forced too, nor should they. Whining about how owners don't spend enough on payroll is just easy clickbait. Running a business and how they spend their money is their business, not for public. If they don't like the product, quit spending your money on the product. Plain and simple.

Foul Territory advocating for higher player salaries as usual.
Let's imagine a league where 5 or 6 teams dominate all big star free agency. The other teams start saying, "Too rich for my blood. Too bad there's no salary cap so that the league could actually focus on competition. I'm just going going to run my team so that I make a nice tidy little profit and then flip it to an ownership group someday."
However much these guys spend, somebody's going to come in last.

really, this one would depend upon who you base as your foundation for spending... if you see the Dodgers are the base... NOBODY else spends enough.. Yanks.. only 3 teams... etc.. though there are 4 or 5 that are so far behind everyone that it's not funny.. if they had a spending floor.. Oakland would be in trouble. hell, the Yanks spend more than they do 25 years ago.
