her guns tho
right?? absolute bicep goals!
I LITERALLY COULDNT STOP STARING THE FIRST TIME I SAW THIS
Right. Like...
I just spent a min looking like an idiot throwing my fingers in the air and still can't do it
megann me too 😂
I've been trying to do this for years. I'm African and I can't even do the African finger snap T-T
You have to keep all the fingers relaxed. The middle finger and thumb touch but use no pressure on any of the fingers. Only the wrist does the job.
no u only have to keep your index finger relaxed and your middle and thumb fingers rigid place them in a position where it looks like you are about to snap your fingers then relax your index finger and flick your wrist
Ugh! I can't do it!!😭😭
All this snapping helped her build those biceps!!
Andrea_ It was a joke, man.
Ebony how so?
+Ebony That's your opinion, a lot of fitness models are beautiful and Lupita looks good with her biceps!
+Ebony you're dumb if you believe this😂😂😂
Shut up!! 😂😂, you make my tummy hurt
Imagine if Thanos had this much attitude when he did his. Lupita approve?
Mosh more than half of life in the universe would vanish.
😂😂 you've known here you guy my guy
I CAN'T DO IT 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Jasmine Lynne a keep practicing. When you least expect it..POP!
I think i can do it but the sound is not as loud as her😂
Jasmine Lynne because ur not black
7orqu3 i dont think i have to be black to do it
Me either.Tried several times. My hands hurt now! [Warning: Do not try this if you have arthritic fingers! I mean it.]
Teenagers in the UK use this gesture a lot. Normally as a way of punctuation or showing off excitement. Pretty sure it came to the UK through African Migrants, so its cool to learn where its from originally!
YES ! During the 90s and early 2000's.
Standard Procedure we still do it
I learned it when I was a kid in the 70s in London. My school was about 75% black, mostly Afro-Caribbean, so maybe that's where it came from.
Which part of London was your school in ?
I think Ali G might have made this popular in UK.
i think i broke my finger
johnny blaze 😂😂😂😂😂
johnny blaze 😂😂😂😂 really
johnny blaze It's an African thing
im in pain
It really is an international thing, not just African, they do it in South and Central America too
Well, I just confirmed that no matter the version, I can't snap my fingers. Complete silence.
Same here. D:
u should stop trying it, especially if you are white, im not being racist.. its just that your fingers will will be all red. im kenyan and even when i do it the underside of my hand starts turning red. its abit painful when you do it for a while but we are used to it here
Nope, not white. But, I guess it's a skill I can live without.
Snapping doesn't make your fingers red....
they will if you do it too much to the point where it gets painful.. if i hit you anywhere your skin will turn reddish
WE DO THIS IS BRAZIL!!! I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS AN AFRCAN THING
DaCota IKRRR!?!?!
She said AFRICAN DIASPORA .. the majorty of brazilians are african boo boo
Tayaìra Alì no i'ts not.
We do it in Jamaica too.
Most Brazilians got African DNA in them, they’ve probably been doing it since the Atlantic slave trade and it’s been passed on to modern Brazilians bruh we never know 💀🗿
It definitely means your in trouble in Nigeria 🇳🇬
Michigan Palace it also means that in Kenya
same in Jamaica
Michigan Palace same in Uganda 😂
Same in Uganda😂
Michigan Palace ikr!! Thats what i said
god shes so beautiful
selsab indeed
Yes!
I'm from Mexico and we do that finger snap also and it means the same thing. All of the Latin American countries do it also. So it means that we learned from the African Ancestors, the African diaspora.
teresaguerrasalazar yup
teresaguerrasalazar about to comment the same, I'm Latina and remember my mum doing the finger snap thingy all the time.
We do it with a "lero lero" and multiple times, really fast.
Luv this !!
Godddd my mom snaps like this allll the time
when you're in an african family and every member can do it except you.
Mila A. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL
ME AFFFFFF!!!!!!
Mila A. I KNOOOOW RIGHT
IKRR AHH LMAOOO
We do this in Ghana 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂oh my days..when your mum does this when she's angry, trust me what comes next is real... that day will be one of your worst days in your life as an African child😂😂😂
Dorothy Adomah Nyarko haha this is so true.
Dorothy Adomah Nyarko hahaha
Dorothy Adomah Nyarko Namibia...same story 😂 you should be on the lookout.
Dorothy Adomah Nyarko proud to be Ghanaian
Brill
When i was a child we would snap at people whenever someone hurt us indicating they're in trouble cause we were gonna snitch on them😂😂😂
Me too
EVERY SINGLE AFRICAN KNOWS THIS😂
I was about to rage because I was like "the fuck is she talking about?" Now I'm like "so, she means that". We used it mostly to emphasise that someone was in trouble.
Tamar Lemma and latinos, you know that when mama does that she gonna kill you lmao
I'm Kenyan and idk how to do it 😶😔
I'm from Mexico and we do it also, it does mean the same thing. All of Latin America does it. I never knew it came from Africa, the African diaspora. Miss Venezuela in 2009 does it, just as she is called to answer her final question, she became Miss Universe.
Tamar Lemma we do it in Tanzania...but like multiple times.
When a teacher calls your name to answer a qn and the answer is just at the top of the tongue...we do this.
We do it when we trying to recall sth basically
Welp, I just spent five minutes straight attempting this, now guess whos going to the hospital for a sprained wrist...🙋🏻
Robert Mata 🤣😂
Robert Mata 😂😂😂💀💀
Robert Mata LOLOL, sorry about that 😏
that's because you are no more african
lol
So, if someone wants to know, Africa diaspora means also Latinos or African latino's , West Indian or Caribbean
I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean Latinos.
Andrea T ... Thanks for clearing that up, bc I only remembered seeing Latino kids doing it in school.
Mariivoire okay It doesn't makes sense to label someone who's ancestors came to the new world as diaspora. They're pretty much the nationality in that country and have completely assimilated into that culture. However first gen up to second count in my opinion.
Mariivoire Alot of black people don't know anything about African culture, and differences between regions. So I don't think they count as diaspora. I'm African
BlindianBabe I thought she was referring to African expatriates.
in the UK, this would usually follow with "that was sick mate" *snap*
I am just so confused why was she created so beautifully like the angles of her face, the way her features are laid out.... like what is this. This is not fair to the rest of the female population
It's called facial symmetry.
@@V.E.R.O. - Could be. But then as a side note, there's a load of really conventionally attractive women, who do not have perfect facial symmetry.
@@Siberius- I didn't say they were not attractive just less; still, the higher the symmetry the more attractive the person is.
@@V.E.R.O. - That doesn't seem to be accurate in all cases. Also it can kill the unique charm real quick. Often we are attracted to people who have something that is a little different. There's various psychological effects going on here.
But also it was just a "side note".
@@Siberius- True, beauty is subjective after all. For example, Channing Tatum is considered to be handsome by many women and some men, I can see that he's physically attractive but he does nothing for me. And it's not just the way someone looks, it's also their attitude, their body language, their voice, how they dress, specific features etc.
It never crossed my mind that people didn't know how to do this, coming from west Africa we did this but I also did this in primary school in London.
ybabzzi for real.
ybabzzi omg same!!
lol true
Same. I thought it was a normal something. We used to do it in school as kids when someone gets into trouble
When your African but can't do it
Eunice Asante #thestruggle 😂😂
same😭
lol
Eunice Asante you are disowned today. Don't worry I'm too because I can't dance, not flexible and have slow reflexes .
Eunice Asante then u need to learn fast
We do this in Jamaica 🇯🇲
well you are from African descent so
Done in Trinidad too...most of the Caribbean islands. ..
duhhhh... of course, you do you ...are a country of African/Afro-diaspora
Pencil Wisdom yup in that video. Hot wuk-Mr.vegas
Old traditions die hard
Whoa, I never actually realised this was an African thing. I always just assumed everyone did it 😂
Same
Same 😂
Same
same
We do that a lot in the Caribbean lol
CupcakeMafia @haitians when they bout to whoop you
Veronica Chemountd lmfaooooo yesss!! Bajans do that too
CupcakeMafia hi
... Yep ... Nassau Bahamas ...
We do the same gesture in saudi arabia, its like ow snap or ur in trouble, like ooow he told mom on you snap snap snap
3jw lol yeah it means the same thing in africa too.
same thing here in brazil. the gesture usually represents like being in trouble with your parents or something
Mø Nälayé fucks up w you? Don't start racist bullshit
Mø Nälayé we don't want to know that, can't a comment just be a peaceful comment without someone starting theories and statistics? however, you are right sooo I kinda agree with you lol
we do it too when we're excited
Fuuuuck look at this African goddess, the through queens bruh 😍😍
she is gorgeous!!
The thirst is real
Damn we do that over here in the Caribbean too!! I didn't know it originated from Africa
Caribbean=African Diaspora... We're all the same😅we do it in America too lol
@@adewestovalltv3476 We are all one. You would be very surprised all black people have alot of things in common.
@@LolaBugzy85 you don't have to be black, I'm Honduran and we also do it.
are caribbean’s not originally african?
@@smile-iv1ir They are. During slavery times the rich bought Africans to the Carribbean I think.
the "american" part of my ethnicity doesn’t allow me to do this. the "african" part is still giving me hope so I’m not gonna give up 😂
🤣🤣
She is so beautiful omg
CrayArt and so natural...so african
Who else hurt their arm trying to do this? I don't think I'm doing it right haha it looks cool though
All in the wrist
It's always amazing figuring out these ancestral connections cause I didn't even know this was an 'African thing'! I grew up doing it on the daily in Jamaica and it means a myriad of things for us...including the punctuation bit that she mentioned.
old school Latinos do this all the time as well, especially after their first sip of cerveza
BlackBeardDelight187 lol
BlackBeardDelight187 ...After their first sip ever or after the first sip for the night?
I Was just gonna comment on how Latinos do this too😂😂
😂😂
Well they have African blood in them so not surprising
Lupita is just a great woman. A terrific actress as well as an overall nice person. Thank you, Lupita.
I love how she says her name. I've heard a few girls here(Zambia) mispronouncing their names trying to make them sound more'fancy' when there's really no need.. Our African names are beautiful and should be pronounced with pride. Love you lupita
We do that in the Caribbean too.
Yup
Which has african diaspora, as she said
Yea I'm cuban and I do this
my brother does this all the time! his best friend, who's from nigeria, taught him how to do it but I always thought it was just something specific to him and not something he learnt back home
This finger snap is also very popular in Cuba. Viva Cuba, Viva Africa! *Snaps*
Samba_Vocalize Africa diaspora influence
Samba_Vocalize hhhhhhhhhh I hate when everything black people other races say we do too can we have ok
Samba_Vocalize African people took it to every country
In Zimbabwe children use it to jeer a colleague whom is in trouble or will be when told on. We often join in chorus singing, "Je je je! I'm telling." Funny thing, I can only do it with my dominant hand as my left is too rigid.
Same
Am Kenyan and when we were young this, among children, meant that they were going to report you for doing something wrong😹😅😂
Yes.
In Ghana they'll sing this "song" along with it.
"Ehe, Ehe, you see what you have done!" the song went something like that.
haiya haiya haiya marakanjo lol
In Uganda as well
Us Jamaicans do the same thing, children would do it when someone did something bad and were about to get in trouble
We do this here in The Bahamas too well we are descendants of africans😂😂
EXACTLY!! Unfortunately though some of us in the USA (me 🙋🏾♀️) were never aware of this snap and I can’t even do it! 😐
I am Brazilian and we do this a lot as a signal of " hurry up" or to show that you are in troubles. ..
it depends from which part of Brazil you are😉
So amazing to know it came from Africa. ❤
My parents are Nigerian and they used to do this a lot. We’re competing now😂
In cameroon , it's actually a warning like " I'm going to report you " 😂
Jamaicans do that as a sign to say... yes now you are in trouble 😅😅
Venezuelan people too! XD
Trinidadians too lol😂
CloudxTifa150. Really?
Angella Williams yes!!! I jad no idea africans do that too 😂
In Angola too, we also used it when you are swearing or when someone is telling you some hot gossip.
Here in Space, us Aliens, especially the teenage ones do that all the tieme. It's used as a jesture to punctuat excitment to a sentence. Like when we find a nice human specimen and are about to probe him/her/it soon.
CafeNightster 😂😂😂
"Ooh. You're in trouble." *snap snap snap snap* used that alot
We do this in Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹
Big up to all my Trinbagonians!
Yea, I'm Egyptian so that's the very north of Africa and we do it too. However, it means different if it's done by an adult or a child, If a parent does it in front of a child it means "i will punish you" so it's close to the Nigerian meaning. and if a child does it repeatedly and quick it means they want to go to the bathroom urgently.
we also do that here in brazil
verdade!!!!
all over latin america too
not where i'm from
In Cuba we do this too when someone gets in trouble and shit is about to go down :P
Same with Nigeria, wow! Or your mum would do it indicating you're going to get your butt whooped!
lmaoo in Kenya too
haya mara kanjo
Same with South Africa.
OMG yes!!! I'm cuban too
That's how we do it in Africa/Somalia
2017 and it usually means you are in trouble 😅😅😅
2017 Same (Somali here) 🇸🇴✊
And Muses of a Dreamer kids also use it when someone gets roasted or told off by their mom in public etc, no?
Somalia is Africa?
My mum would then bite her finger then dare me to do something or exaggerate how much she wants to let all he'll loose right now
...yeah...
I never thought that something like this would ever have to be taught😂as african as it gets #represent
Hahaha...i clicked only to see if that's all she did in the video.
Ukr. 😂😂. I didn't think it's something you "learn"
Anyone who has successfully learned to do the African Finger Snap after watching this video, my hat goes off to you. You have many talents to which I will never be able to aspire!
This is also done in the Southern USA.
It is also very common in Argentina, it means "hurry up" or "quick"
Or that something is too hot, like "SHIT *finger snap* I burned my tongue"
Marina Ibarra Like she said, it's popular in African and within the African diaspora. That would include South America.
Marina Ibarra in Jamaica it we normally do it when we hurt our fingers or when someone is in trouble
allen makere Yeah, we have a lot of african culture thankfully. It's a shame that the most of them have been decimated in the war against Paraguay. We have always been ruled by bigots.
We do it in Jamaica all the time as children and I thought everyone does it till now. I never knew it had a name
Call me Winter I feel like the made up the name just for the video tbh.
Lupita Nyong'o got me out here flapping my hand like a weirdo
omg i remember as kids we used to that with “Oooo you in trouble ooooo”. And other uses were forms of expression with emotions. Celebrating a win at dominos, pretty lady walks by men would “Oooo mami mami” *Snap!
Didn’t know it was an African thing thought was a Caribbean thing.
It's Day 3 and i've finally got it!! Oh sNAP.
Day 1:
- This is ridiculous
- Hurt my shoulder violently flinging my arm in the air
- Discovered that if i rested my elbow on something, i could start to make a sound. Probably because it isolated my energy more towards my hand, rather than losing the energy moving my upper arm
- Had to stop from the pain of my poor technique
Day 2:
- IMMA DO THIS.
- Did it everywhere. Waiting for the bus, walking down the street, eating with friends, in the shower...
- Bruised my finger flinging it down onto the tap while bushing my teeth
- Learnt to go without the elbow support. Learnt to use my upper arm to just provide initial power, then let my forearm and wrist do the swinging
- Discovered if I put a little Lupita attitude into it it got better, because it angled my body to throw my shoulder power into the action as well.
Day 3:
- Woke up and started snapping away.
- Able to make a sound consistently, but realize I make the loudest sounds when I focus on pulling uP my hand, and less so on throwing. This makes it hit a nice strong peak acceleration at the bottom of the motion.
- Snapping everywhere. Irritating everyone. Throwing shade all over the place.
Bless
🤣🤣
In brazil we do that all the time it means "eita!"
Bruh, people should make videos attempting to do this. Me ,as an African child, I do this every time my siblings/cousins get in trouble. Hilarious 😂
Lupita Nyong's
Movies
1. Maz Kanata - Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens, Episode 8 The Last Jedi, Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker 2015 - 2017 - 2019
I've been wanting to know how to do this for years, but my 'friends' have hoarded the intel. Thanks, Lupita and Vanity Fair!
Lmaooo my Sudanese mother does this finger snap thing when she's angry lmaooo
queen
Every African know this my parents be doing on the phone
What if Nakia stole the gauntlet?
At least someone else won't die...
I’ve been doing this snap since I was a kid!! Had no idea it was African!! Glad I came across this video
We do this snap in the Caribbean as well.
Ashley Jemmott the African diaspora
My Nigerian self looking at the comments saying they can't do it 😈
She should’ve also done the tchuipp sound 😁😂
However she wears hair, long or short, Lupita Nyong'o is still pretty and glamous! Hollywood can be proud of her kenyan features.
When you see your mom do this, you better run
Oh, Lupita. 😍
I do it at school when someone is in trouble
*Me trying in vain to do this for hours*
UNGHHH HOW SHE DO THAT?! 😂
I tried too and just hurt my arm.
The trick is the snap your wrist back up after flicking it down. Also try moving your thumb further down your finger.
If you’re confused, just listen to me. Put your middle finger and thumb together, then let the index finger fall onto the point where the two fingers meet, next to your nails. The trick is to not use your own energy to make the finger fall. Let the finger fall on itself. Create such an immense motion that enables the finger to fall using gravity onto your nails. You can’t do it instantly in 2 minutes. You will take a while to get the hang of it. But eventually, it works! I recommend starting with your right hand first.
Worked in 5minutes for me
I had multiple points of complete hopelessness within this short time.
The trick that helped me.
1)like she said completely make the index finger free and relaxed
2) try to pull the index finger into the palm even while it's being whipped, so as it hits the first division of the middle finger. Slightly curve the index as you whip.
Tell me if this worked for you
we do that in Colombia too!!!
We do it in the Caribbean too❣
Queen
Boys at school are also doing this at school and it looks easy but when I tried to do it it was so hard but now I can do it!!!!! Thx Lupita!!!
She's so cuuuuute how is that even possible when she's already gorgeous
We have that in Egypt too! I guess it's also used as punctuation according to the situation.
Maram Enany she did say it was an African thing
Layla Johnson Not saying that this person is specifically like this but ive noticed that a lot of Egyptians dont like being called African. Which makes no damn sense. YOU ARE AFRICAN!
Mara Okafor lol so true
Mara Okafor
Modern day Egyptians are not Africans lol you people always try to steal Egyptian history. Learn some history
My (American)mom's been doing this forever. However, this short video finally taught me how.
My carpal tunnel is worse now.
we also do that in the pacific islands.
My youngest sister can do it and we were born and raised in the U.S and our parents never thought us that, no exposure whatsoever, but she can still do it. The Africa inside of her is still there
Very well explained sis Lupita 👌🏾
who else is waving the wrist around like a mad person and has a sore hand?
We do this in Barbados🇧🇧
Aye in Ghana we do this!
Ghana geng here🇬🇭
1:26 when someone angered you at a young age and you want to snitch 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Oh mama Africa 😂😂😂
I knew exactly what she would do when I saw the thumbnail. The only people I've ever seen do that is my father's family--and they're Dominican (which is part of the diaspora, I know). My cousin Frankie taught me how to do it 30 years ago, and all this time I thought he was the one who made it up lmbooo
I used to do that so much as a child without even knowing what it was. I can still do it, and my friends think I'm like dislocating a bone or something 😂👍
we do that in the middle east too!
moonflower more than half of the middle east is African countrys
nie mah ..... no wtf. The only “African” country in the Middle East would be Egypt. Every other country which is I think 17 or 18 is not African. Where’d you get this information form Lmao.
you need to search history.. the area called the middle east wasnt named so until around 1948. the area sits on the african tectonic plate, Middle east is not a continent. Please do research to find this out for yourself, then come back and reply. Where is the Mid west, south north then? the area is actually North east africa. thats like saying France is not part of Europe.. makes no sense. History is important please, learn.
um..I think I broke my wrist
This is an African thing? I've been doing this since I was little.
Lupita is literally a goddess. Ugh love me Lupita!!
Lupita you are so beautiful inside out. Please please don't change. Love you and God bless you
