Forging a simple holdfast for wood working, black bear forge
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лип 2017
- This simple holdfast if forged from 11/16" cold rolled steel for a good fit in a 3/4" hole. While these can certainly be made entirely by hand. I am showing the way I make these as a production item. By making the best use of the equipment I have it allows me to make these at a fair price for both me and and my customers.

I've been using 2 of your leaf end holdfasts for about two years now. I absolutely love'em. Thank you for keeping the smithing/craftsman tradition alive.
glad you like them.
"Tradition" He's even using a power tool to remove scale, there's nothing tritonal about his methods.
This popped into my video stream 5 yrs later. Love how you did video of Two items, Longer view of item 1 then closer view of item 2.
Thank you from the future 😊 July 2023
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You've helped me considerably, much appreciated.
Have seen them used a lot and now I see "how it''s made". Thanks, Greg.
Great production system, looks very efficient.
I'm a total newbie to blacksmithing, and just made a holdfast for my 3rd finished product. It was a straightforward build with minimal equipment and works quite nicely.
The bear paw holdfasts are the best in my opinion, thank you for them John. Amazing work.
Great to hear. I do appreciate your support
Would love to see the process of making the holdfast with the square corner, they are such nice looking tools. Thanks for sharing
this is an older video and doesn't show the full process, but it does show some of it. ua-cam.com/video/WUgzSUeSg_Y/v-deo.html
Great work John! You have a great shop and property there!! Looks very peaceful!
Just got my shipping notification for the 2 leaf end holdfasts. I guess I'll have to build a bench soon :)
I did several orders yesterday when I was filming this video. Get that bench built and put those things to work. Oh, and don't oil or wax them, they slip if you do that.
Thanks for the heads up.
Really enjoyed the straight forward video. Keep up the awesome work!
just ordered 2 of these this morning. can't wait till theyre delivered....
They should ship tomorrow, thank you for the order
@@BlackBearForge Oh awesome. Thanks for replying and letting me know. Your stuff comes highly recommended....
@@BlackBearForge Hey, im lovin these hold fasts....just thought I'd should let you know. thanks man
Thank you again John for another great video.Im making a set tomorrow.
Thank you so much for this video!
You are so welcome!
When using the concrete mixer, stick an old couch cushion in the opening to cut down on all the noise.
Keith Devers is that what you've done? I worked in a foundry and we used the same method, there wasn't much you could do to cut down the noise.
Hey John, you seem to have a pretty nice wood working shop. Make videos of woodworking; if it is like your black smiting, it will be a hit. Thanks for great contents and Merry Christmas.
I'm afraid my wood shop vastly exceeds my skills as a wood worker. One day though I hope to find the time. It all comes from having a weakness for cool tools.
When you were bending your hold fast I noticed you used a old looking wrench to secure it before bending
I have one just like it
Do you know anything about them
Also i am glad i got to see this video because i was going to make it fit the pritchel hole
Then a close up i seen you had a hardy hole adapter
Thanks again great job
Think the cement mixer idea would drive my neighbors crazy
It’s seems to be a old monkey wrench. I am a plumber and have collected them for many years. Basically a pipe wrench with no teeth. Used many on flat surfaces that have a nice finish on them.
I enjoy watching your projects, John. How do you make your Froes?
sounds like a good topic for a video. My froes feature a wrapped and forge welded eye. They are made from 3/8 x 1 1/2 mild steel
Just uploaded a video on making a froe.
How long is the piece of stock you start with? Thanks. These are great.
20". Sorry, I should have made mention of that
How long do you make them
No sir I've never used a couch cushion in a mixer. It just sounds like a good idea.
Great video. What type of round stock do you use to forge them with. I would love to try my hand at it.
11/16" to fit a 3/4" hole
Black Bear Forge thank you. I appreciate the reply. You can tell the utubers who care about there subscribers. They are the ones that go out of there way to respond to subscribers questions no matter how insignificant they may seem. Look forward to new content thank you.
Nevermind John found it
I would like to give it a try myself: Exactly what steel should I use? Great video providing insights into the process! Thank you!
Mild steel is ideal for holdfasts. I buy 11/16" cold rolled, which is an ideal fit for a 3/4" hole
@@BlackBearForge thank you for the quick reply!
I had spring steel in mind, good to know that I don‘t need to order something fancy. Thanks!
I‘ll search for something that matches your description and is available in Germany.
Thanks John for the video. Always learning somthing new on your channel. I'd like to try to make a couple of holdfasts. Where do you put the bend and how long of a reach would these give? Is there a certain angle to the bend for these to work?
In general the reach should be about 1 1/2 times the thickness of the bench
@@BlackBearForge Just made my very first holfasts today. They work great :)
Can't thank you enough John for all the things that I learned from you. I wish you all the best.
Goodness there's some works goes into them. I hardly know how you can afford to sell them so cheaply.
Making them in batches and doing one step on each in turn makes them a reasonable production item.
I’m guessing that’s just mild steel John?
So simple, just buy a land with no neighbors next to you, build a blacksmith shop, buy all those power tools, learn how to operate them, buy all hand tools, forge, learn how to use them, buy the right metal….😮
