    Years ago we had a big diesel whacker plate , every time a guy called Charlie would spend hours cranking it over by hand to get it started ,We would all look at him in amazement at the strength and power her exhorted to get it to burst into life .Then one day he asked why it had a key slot ? . Well we said thats for the electric start . He never did see the funny side of us not telling him .

      Military turbine starter motor.
      We use similar to start blower engines on pulling tractors and trucks. Usually on 24 or 36 volts.
      For starting helicopter turbines, they are 48volts, usually.

    If you build a shop you can have fun for more years than your 70S.
    The tools that you have will help make it easy to do work to make money even after 70.

    Those HATZ engines are awesome and indestructible. In my army days we had hatz engines on our Gen sets . Runs great until on startup it decides to run in reverse because it kicks back to compression. Makes a huge mess with the oil bath airfilter suddenly becoming the exhaust. 😆

      We had them in the army for gensets too. First rule of thumb was, put your thumbs on top of the crank, they were mounted on a grated deck on the trailer we used, slipping from the kickback crank could do ugly things to your thumbs...

    Dear MATT,
    These keep falling into your lap because people want to help you, which means that people must like you very much, which means that people know you are an earnest, hard-working, friendly, helpful, and warm neighbor. All of that and more positive traits are apparent to all of us who follow you. Best Regards.

    Hey Matt, what an excellent little video, I was absorbed into you struggling to get that Compactor going, I am not waiting to see the finished machine in working order, and you using it. Good luck and thank you for sharing it.

    Hi Matt on the other video you posted about the Farymann I wrote you a piece about that little knob that you said you don't know what it's for. The nob is actually a cold start help to inject more fuel. You put your gas handle to full and then pull the knob up so it clicks then start the engine and as soon as it's started you throttle down and it automatically drops back down

    Matt... been watching your videos for awhile now and a subscriber. I'm a gas engine guy and have been all my life. After watching your videos and you doing work on your projects it's finally dawned on me I've been wrong all my life about diesel engines. I can't believe how simple they really are. You have inspired me so much I looking for a project myself to get introduced into the world of diesel engines. Thank you.

    It was always difficult and hard to believe they were still hand cranking stuff into the 70’s I felt for you as a sat drinking my coffee. Looks easy from that view point, not so hanging off a crank handle of a machine that had seen better days that then sat outside for twenty years. Well done Matt

    That red knob is a timing advance. It does something like 5°, to aid in cold starting. The dipsticks are usually under the aircleaner somewhere.

    • @dimievers5573
      @dimievers5573 3 роки тому +1

      Not timing advance . It's the decompression . It counts back about 5 rotations of the engine until it let's go and gives you full compression. It enables you to hand cranck the engine up to speed .

    • @dimievers5573
      @dimievers5573 3 роки тому +1

      It's a diesel . It does NOT have timing advance by the lack of electronic ignition. Diesels don't need those
