I'm happy you are covering this game in deph. I know it might sound like an overstatement, but I was so frustrated with Total War Warhammer 3 and this reminds me why gaming is forever, even if big publishers became a dumpster fire that will just please newcomers until they are burn out with abusive monetization. It's outstanding what a small, devoted team can do, and this game is the proof it will always be the case.
Outstanding viewpoint. You put into words how I've been feeling about video games lately.
Rasc Is absolutly insane as your main wielder.
The extra range on the ravagers/swampriders, combined with the skill "eager" that he usually gets access to pretty early on which gives them another 2 movement in the first turn, allows for an insanely aggressive play-style because the riders of the swamp will almost always be able to reach the other side of the battle map in the first turn and do over the top damage through the charge ability. You can up that damage even more using the "brutal" skill that he also gets access to.
You can usually have the corral spit out riders of the swamp in any village in just a few turns. Split the riders up into max number of stacks and you can exhaust retaliation on you enemies tankiest unit with a small stack and then just pelting him with the rest. If I'm up against a group of hostiles with no ranged attacks and no wielder to spit magic I wait with all but the last stack getting a ton of destruction in the process so i can blast a bunch of destruction spells before they even get to move. The stack upgrades in the birthing pools are pretty cheap and I build that one early anyway because of the crafty spiders and a stack of thirty swamp riders with Rasc is nearly unbeatable.
I think you're underestimating him. I have overwhelmed fully kitted out Loth necromancer armies with spell heavy wielders before they got their first spell out. His high speed lets him hunt other wielders down for sport. Rasc is a beast. His style might be a bit unusual for this faction but he is one of their strongest
That's the only wielder i got any kind of success with, immediately upon seing +1 movement spec for already fast unit my HoMM3 noggin started joggin'. Not to mention riders are both tagged as Rana and Beast, so they get to double tap on the upgrades.
Other units, however, seem really clunky to use.
always wondered about the game having no wait button like HOMM
now I notice "wait" is an actual ability, that's genious!
Yep, I was so frustrated at first but then when I found it as a skill o was soo gladly surprised
Not having ADHD is an important skill in this day and age.
build a 4 stack of sages and 2 turtles with creation wielder. You can build a fort in turn 1 with earth block. you pop 3 of them each turn. extremely strong
I would object too crawlers being bad. Take the sla kin level him up quick to increase the tier of your spells and give him chelun elders and elder crawlers then use the dimension door spell to teleport crawlers on top of the enemies while farming essence with the elders
Awesome strategy my dude! Didn't even think of that
This is pretty similar to hydra teleport strat from HOMM, love this
@@Ziforigin I'm seeing new and re-hashed strategies from those older games that I only knew of vaguely. Great stuff.
You can also turn your Cheluns into shock troopers by utilizing dimension door.
One thing to keep in mind with the Eth’dra is upgrading them to Dragons drops their unit stack size from a max of 10 to 3. This makes them hopelessly vulnerable to the Justice spell which will outright kill 1/2/3 (depending on caster skills) of them every time it is cast. I personally loath the spell to begin with as it ruins the fun of top tier units but it is especially problematic for Rana as their top tier units only come with a max stack size of three (I believe all other units of the same tier are five).
Add to this both the price tag for the Dragons themselves (2600 gold and 2 Amber for a basic dragon. 3200 and a whopping 7 amber for an Elder Dragon) on top of the already astronomical cost for the Smouldering Cave, two levels of expensive as hell upgrades for said cave plus the Dragon Pyramid. All for a stack that can be crippled if not killed by a single Justice spell. Fun for bullying the AI or neutral mobs but any player with half a brain is going to be able to utterly ruin your dragons with this spell.
God, I hope they nerf that spell. I use it against the AI and even then I feel dirty using it lul.
It is nerfed to 1/1/1.
Justice is fine, it's been nerfed so that it doesn't scale with spell damage. Just don't use unupgraded dragon stacks against factions that generate order and destruction.
Use dragons against indies, duh. Imo Justice is a great idea, 'cuz as much as it is fun to stomp everything in your path with a horde of top tier units it's not fun at all playing against such.
I recently fell in love with Chelun. Had a wielder who increased troop movement and stumbled across an legendary artifact that increased even further, it made up for their weakness. Now with most of the battlefield in reach these guys are real battle tanks!
Im a Rana player in heart and soul. This is good material.
Bought the game 2 days ago, knowing that its similar to HOMM which I love. Played with friend 1st match not knowing anything about it and I chosed Rana. When I saw that "frogies" have dragons it become my fav faction :D
You can do some cheesy stuff with earth block, when you get the upgrades i believe you get 3 placements of it, and it's pretty easy to block everything off with how much creation you can generate.
AI is less than stellar at dealing with it especially if you leave one or two openings with tanky ass guard/chelun there.
Just what I was looking for, thanks! Love my scalie boys
Thanks for the video Sparty, I have 6 hours of me getting squashed while learning the faction xD
Tutor is INSANE i start with learning hero with this faction. I rush him up to 20 and he gives all other heroes like instant lvl 17+ with lvl 3 tutor. Insanely pwerful.
Your video immensely helped me understand how this faction is supposed to be played. I just successfully finished the last chapter of the Rana campaign, thanks to you! Your advice about storm guards, shamans and guards totally changed my game!
I was looking for some info on the Rana unit roster for days now, until I've found this video at last! Thank you!
Watching this as year out with some changes. The turtles got channel essence and so did the dragons. The tier two crawlers no longer have wait and instead have burrow which allows them to dissapear for a turn and pop up anywhere on the map that isnt occupied. Really good to have atleast one unit of crawlers to attack backline ranged.
Very good well put guide for rana faction. This helped me get up and destroying my enemies effectively.
Very good vid. I understand Rana more! Thanks
Teleporting Turtle Tower is now one of my favorite strats in video games. Those turtles get real angry whenever I ruin their nap by blinking them over castle walls.
once i unlocked the buliding to the dragons, and later the upgraded version elder dragons, i really fell in love with this frog faction :D they are so well made and super powerful as they should be
Very interesting game! Its funny how similar its factions can be with warhammer factions. You ve got your lizardmen with fat frogs and mesopotamian style buildings, your brettonia allied with some woodelves (or maybe beastmen), your undead with constructs and varya that is a combination of dogs of war and araby. I like how the game is deep with its own mechanics and not a straight copy of homm3.
I think you mean Mesoamerican, not Mesopotamian. Mesopotamian ziguraths are the semi-pyramids in Iraq and Iran. The ones from the Lizardmen and the Rana are based on the stepped pyramids of Mexico and Brazil
I suck at this game, but its fun
So the frog faction is literally named frog
Really insightful video, but I think you underestimate T'Chyra and the utility spells of creation and arcana. High tier dimensional door enables crawlers and cheluns to be played offensively. And they make for strong blockers against enemy ranged units. Mix in the mist spell and they can't even attack them with their melee units.
For me, Rana relies mostly on utility spells aimed at disabling enemy units in various ways. Some of the utility spells don't work for all maps, but some spells alwasy do, and when they do they can become really strong.
I adore this faction so much for being very indirect in playstyle. Rather than dealing direct damage to the right troop, you need to be a little more cunning and manipulate the enemy troops, your own, and the landscape in various ways.
Now i didnt even know You can choose factions. When I went to skirmish all that was available were heroes and I eventually could progress into different units but always started of with "humans"
Also its frustratingly hard when you set up a game against 2 other A.I. and they just focus you non stop i would expect them to atleast fight once against eachother.
Thanks for the video
Great guide.
R'Lac seems super strong. Most of Rana's units have the Rana racial trait. Only the Ravagers and Crawlers are not Rana, and the Ravager upgrade is Rana. With other factions, they're more split between two different races. Like with Arleon, they're split 5/8 human units and 3/8 fae units.
Lizardman and Dragons, can't get any better for me
one year late but "spicy little.... mushroom (?)" just cracked me up lmao
Looking forward to getting into this. Got it in the Summer sale on Steam. I am too busy with V Rising to risk playing anything else right now though, I don't want to distract myself when I've found a game IO really enjoy playing (they are few and far between when I play nothing but one game for months, but I've found one with V Rising) Songs of Conquest is most definitely on my list of games to play next, however.
I didn't play the Might and Magic games though, so this style of game is pretty new to me. Played most of the Civ games though, is it anything like that? Also played Xcom and a lot of other turn based strat games. Not gotten into a City Builder game for a very long time though. Last one proper was Sim City 4, and that was a very long time ago.
Bought the game yesterday and having lots of fun so far. The only thing that puts me off is the capped stack size. I always enjoyed building armies with huge stacks of critters (10k skeletons anyone?). Since the game seems to be balanced around a maximum stack size for each unit type, I highly doubt they will change that system. A pity, really.
I personally think that stack size is a great addition for the purpose of balance. If you think about it more it's like the unit size in total war games
Sure, capped stacks are great for balancing and reading comments, most people seem to be in favor of smaller stacks. In Total War, they are also important for game performance. I've played HoMM since part 1, that's likely the problem. You just get used to a certain way of playing a game. For me, capped stacks and no mixed units in armies are a game breaker as was the eternal winter mechanic in Endless Legend. Still a good game though.
@@Azhalan My advice is to play a little more. I also have played since the first HoMM, Like you, there were some things that bothered me about this game, mostly because I was used to something else. I was planning to give up, but I watched a couple ItalianSparticus youtubes and something made me want to try it again. Second time at it, I am much more enthusiastic. (Also, as I understand it, you can build pretty tall skeleton stacks.)
I re-read this, and want to change my advice. Watch a couple more videos and see if any of them interest you. They did me. That helped my with the differences.
I for one like the change, some proper unit compositions and playstyles. Not just a doomstack walking around. This feels more tactical and more to my taste.
Oh, a literal dragon? That changes things.
Itachamo with the upgraded cheluns worked well for me when I spammed the shit out of repel with explosive fungi. Huuuuuuge damage from that
I have a question ever since I played HM&M3 for the first time: Where do you get a second army for those additional heroes?
Will you be revisiting songs of conquest when 1.0 releases?
It seems like you can still train unupgraded units, which I do quite like.
Great work. Male someone subtitle for this wonder
The faction I know little of and not care about. This should be interesting to see, if the video changes my opinion.
Edit: Elder Dragons... well, that would do the trick.
Barya next, please!
It's tomorrow :)
I know its early access, but I hope they add dwarfs or viking faction. I believe it would fit the game. Bear riders, shield maidens, rune priests berserkers
Isn't the total spell damage resistance offered by P'Cha 115%?
75% from Level 3 Magic Reistance and 40% Innate Spell damage resistance?
Yes because my addition is block head level
Swing and a miss on the Earth Block spell, otherwise a good guide!
Nice Video but i have a very important question, how does the Stats exactly work? :)
When a unit attacks another unit it compares defense to offense and depending on the ratio it'll change the amount of damage dealt
@@fatcatlocatedinahat962 Is it in %? So when my unit have 20 offense and the enemy 10 defence it increases dmg by 10%?
@@sagittariusa9012 not 100% sure but if you hover over an enemy when you want to attack it will display the damage buff
@@fatcatlocatedinahat962 ok thanks
@@sagittariusa9012 Yes, it`s % based 1% for every attack>defence and 0.5% for def>att
Spicy little mushroom 😂
I think of amphibians including salamanders and cecileans when I hear of this faction. Why? "Rana" means "frog" in Spanish, which is an amphibian.
Elder dragons you say?
How do weilder stats work?
Got a video on that in the works :)
Anyone can tell me how to buy/create units?? How can this be so difficult to find out. No videos, and no texts about it.
Use your wielder and right click on your town after producing buildings that make units :)
@@italianspartacus Will try that. Thanks! Want to like this game. So hopefully units will help with that. Heard it's helpful :P
I love the look of Rana, with all the battletoads and ninja turtles and dragons and wannabe dragons, but i don't like playing it. I prefer something more simple and straightforward.
Dragons...? Thanks but I prefer my Eth'dra
UA-cam Algorithm
these units have terrible names and terrible flavor texts.
