Apple's Biggest Cock Ups

- Even the mighty planet-conquering Apple have regularly experienced their bad days, wrong turns, and jaw-dropping disasters over the last forty years. Steve Jobs himself once proudly declared that “You’ve got to be willing to crash and burn. If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t get very far.” So, in chronological order, let’s sink our teeth into some of Apple’s most memorable flops, failures and quite literal meltdowns…

Really like the unrehearsed dialogue format of the new channel. Seems as though it allows Simon increased creative freedom that appears as a more natural narrative. I personally find this as a more enjoyable viewing experience.
Excellent, glad you feel that way. It’s exactly what I wanted. To have more fun with the format :)
I think it's a great mix of the feel of Brainfood with the length and more concise plot of Today I Found Out
I agree l like the more natural narrative. Its good to learn with a laugh
Hell ya, it's spectacular
I concur. Good work
That whole dropping the PC to reseat chips is a surprisingly common occurrence amongst other computing sectors, there a certain model of full-size copier I had to work on where the factory recommended way to clear an error was to put your knee on a certain point of the back of the copier and then bear hug the machine. Needless to say doing this on-site in front of customers was a bit awkward...
Percussive maintenance is a perfectly reasonable way to fix a computer's issue. "Normal" People do look at you a bit weird when you smack the side of the computer or drop it. Is sort of satisfying sometimes though.
I had an Iiyama 17” CRT monitor back in c. 1998 that developed thin black lines across the screen. The printed manual actually recommended “applying a short hard impulse with a hand or similar object to the case“ to resolve the issue.
@@tomgidden AKA "smack it" LMAO!
I worked over the phone customer support for a credit card processor. Not only was picking the machine up 3 inches and dropping it the best fix for a particular error on a particular machine, I had to talk customers through it. I only had a couple people flat out refuse...
CRT TV's used to respond to this type of fixing as well... :D
How about one about toys'r'us? And you must wear an inflatable dinosaur costume while reading it.
No the dino costumes are better xD
Don't you mean a giraffe costume?
If Apple made cars: One day you get a flat tire and instead of the freedom of changing it yourself, you have to trade the entire car in at a dealership.
Lol and the whole time you owned it you would always fear something breaking or catching fire at random.
The fact that they call their repair staffs "genius" at the genius bar makes me sick because they want you to think you can't do anything without an apple genius.
Yeup. Several years ago I dated a girl who got a new iPod. When she went to sync it, it said she needed to update to the new iTunes. Ok, so I helped her and got it downloaded. Then it said the new iTunes would not run because her Mac OPERATING SYSTEM was to old..... w.t.f.... actually looked at if she could install a newer operating stranger and nope, needed a whole new damn computer.... cause she got a new iPod. She was pissed, I was pissed... ya.... we both said never buying a Mac after that. That was a bunch of bull.
Best comment I've seen on this video, I actually laughed so hard I woke my dog.
Actually, if Apple made cars, they'd only work on Apple roads, only run on Apple gas/electric and they'd run slower after two years for no reason.
The worlds current top three oxymorons are:
1. Apple Genius
2. Central Intelligence Agency
3. Lurpak Spreadable

Does anybody else feel like this is something Simon has told his date? 😂
a clown 🤣
Hahahaha
@@brainblaze6526 🤣😂
🤣🤣🤣
That's what she said!
Us UA-cam Red users are paying Simon. Screw commercials.
Thanks :). This channel has zero ads currently, all just focused on growth for now.
Us Redtube users too!
Joe Baumgart LMAO 😂 can’t blame you I guess he’s quite handsome
I would have the premium service, but most of the channels I watch are demonitized so I refuse to pay UA-cam until that is resolved. I understand they aren't necessarily add friendly, but there's no reason that should effect revenue from the subscription.
@@jaydunbar7538 Google Music comes with UA-cam Red. I signed up for the music service (which is pretty good) and I'm happy to get ad-free UA-cam with it.
"I'll just bleep it out so I can still make money on this video"
Lol.
Dropping your hardware on your desk to fix it.
Ah, percussive maintenance 😂
Impact adjustment
The so called Rogue Ann adjustment
Remember smacking your TV to improve reception? The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Greetings from the future!
I once had a computer that would only run sideways because it meant gravity was holding the cards in place.
I just used it sideways. 👍🏼
Socketed ICs are vulnerable to bad connection caused by corrosion. Ideally you'd go inside, pull them all out and stick them back in. That usually scratches it off the surface.
Of course if anyone at Apple suggested consumers opening and working on their own shit Steve would have their head 🤣
Gold plated contacts fix that problem entirely.
Business Blaze has become my favorite Simon channel. I don't even give a shit about business.
:D. It’s only tangentially about business, I needed a theme to talk some shit ;)
@@brainblaze6526 I'm lovin' shit talking Simon, so keep up the smack talk. My UA-cam feed is pretty much All Simon, All the Time so seeing you chill is fantastic.
These episodes keep getting funnier, I love it
"You've got to be willing to burn🔥or your Business wont get very Blaze." - Simon Steve "Your boy with the Blaze" Jobs Whistler
This is getting ridiculous this guy keeps making amazing videos and know I spend hours every day learning useless stuff
My master plan is working
Lol well played
It's not useful yet. If you need the knowledge later, you learned it now.
@@brainblaze6526 I knew it.
@@andiward7068 Yeah, I know a lot of useless shit of all sorts that I read or saw somewhere in distant past too ... and although it is not very productive, it surprisingly ocassionaly helps me look quite clever. ;D
So this appeared in my suggestions, and I'm like, "is that...Simon?!?” tap.."OMG it is!! And he's cursing and funnier than ever!"
Loving his spontaneous nature here! Up the dose in Bio/Geographics and you should be good!!!
Ok so is this a new channel?? Was I under a rock again?? I'd seriously follow Simon to hell at this point!
Same here. I’ve been watching his videos, always so proper and serious! This is different. Nice shift!
I musta been under the rock next to yours. I only found out about this channel maybe two months ago.
As much as I absolutely love Business Blaze and how he presents here, I like having Bio/Geographics in the more serious format, especially given a lot of the content. If you want more crazy Simon the new Megaprojects one is sort of half way between, & it’s becoming more like this in the Today I Found Out videos as well.
"one day this channel will be sponsored by backblaze"
little did he know
Omg I love your reaction and comments makes everything more hilarious and just great to watch, I really don't like saying this but so far this is my favorite channel you have. This episode alone made me laugh so much great job bud. You and Karl really help make youtube feel like tv of old but only if it was better then it what it was and is. Please don't stop!
Fecking love untethered Simon! It's like Karl but sober!
I’m a huge fan of Simon and everything he touches and one of my fav things is his podcast, Brainfood, which I cannot get enough of. I am so stoked I found this channel today because I LOVE seeing Simon’s adorable personality. He’s so silly and funny! Love it! I hope this channel takes off because I cannot get enough of it.
Thank you :)
Bono has glaucoma! Poor Bono, he's a genuine dude!!
He was a lot more genuine before Lemon, lol.
This is so funny, Simon is a great host... I also hate iTunes it messed up all my music library. Good job
Thanks. And iTunes f’ing blows. To this very day.
You are not alone. The more updates they make, the worse it gets. Apple techs never heard of the KISS principle. More complicated and less functional are somehow better in their world.
@@michaelb1761 it works great if you created it and know exactly how you designed it to work.
I got the second generation iPod (2006 I think?) and LOVED using iTunes with it. Was very simple and user friendly. Now I can barely navigate through it to do the simplest of tasks. Plus it converts all your music files to some nonsense proprietary crap file that is a pain in the ass to deal with outside the Apple world. Definitely something good that went downhill with “improvements” over time.
When my computer crashed, wiping out my iTunes (this was pre-cloud) I couldn’t figure out how to get the music files off my iPod and back onto the new computer. Apple tech told me I should have backed it up with a portable hard drive. Wtf? “A small handheld portable hard drive? You mean like MY IPOD IS SUPPOSE TO BE?!?” (this was pre-touch versions or even the iPhone) Luckily tech nerds will always find a way around their proprietary foolishness for us.
@@k.stacey7389 Yeah it was intentional to prevent piracy. Otherwise you could just go to your friend's house and give him a copy of all your albums. If you did that with the mp3s BEFORE putting them on the ipod that was someone else's fault for not having DRM on the files, but once it was on the ipod it was Apple's job to keep it from getting pirated.
When I was a kid, my finance exec dad brought home an Apple III. The only program we had at first was a spreadsheet. I made super wide columns to use it as a word processer. Getting a hard drive and a mouse was a game changer. Within a couple of months, his company retired using them. So we had 3 Apple III's. One for him, one for me, and one for spare parts. That was the last Apple product I ever owned.
Hitting computers and other tech devices to fix them has an actual technical term, it's called 'percussive maintenance'.
Simon, your dislike of Apple maps fills my heart with joy
There are people who actually like Apple Maps?
@@brainblaze6526 until waze arrived on the scene, my ex would only use apple maps and it was infuriating as it just wouldn't work correctly.
@@brainblaze6526 yeah, Google bought Waze back in 2013 and now Google Maps has speed trap, construction, stalled vehicle, and a handful of other notices integrated into it (and users can add notifications along the route, hopefully from the passenger seat).
I only use Google Maps (I don't think the fruit company makes their map app for Android users, not that I would use it anyway). I did enable "offline maps" and I have my home metropolitan area, plus the surrounding couple hundred miles, all saved on my smartphone - just in case a coronal mass ejection (or the aluminum foil hat wearing anti-5G crowd) takes down the entire power grid &/or the phone system. I also have paper maps and a compass.
I heard you mention the driving across the active runway thing in Alaska. You omitted the Apple Maps gaffe in Australia. I think the equivalent problem in the UK would be trying to navigate from Wembley to Enfield, but Apple Maps would avoid the A406 and take you via the Chiltern Hills AONB, where your vehicle would likely break down and roving wild animals could potentially stalk you make a meal out of you (if exposure didn't kill you first). But somewhere in Australia. Allegedly.
Anyone who holds love for apple maps fills my heart with anger.
@@lydan5808 I see why they're an ex.
I love how you told the future. Just finished watching an episode sponsored by back blaze lol. Shame you didn’t see Covid coming lol
Watching this in 2021 - your definition of a long video has certainly changed
true
Now the short news ones are over 20 minutes 😂
Who is this wonderful and mythical Danny who is behind so much fun?
he has a twitter @dannysalter
He is a Legend.
Also "You're holding it wrong" perfectly sums up apple's hubris and the main reason I have never nor will ever buy their crap.
"One day this channel will be sponsored by Backblaze" legend
By far my favorite video of the week featuring co*k in the title 😉. Also, the picture of Simon done on an Etch A Sketch is a fabulous addition to the studio!
Absolutely loving the less formal format, this video made me laugh multiple times, thank you!
:) thanks
want you to know that watching your channels is how me and my wife wind down everyday. love the info and glad to finally glad to see that there's channels that isn't 100% bullshit.
"One day this channel will be sponsored by backblaze."
Congrats Simon, you're there.
Yes, Simon! Bono has to wear the shades because he has chronic glaucoma that he's been fighting for the past 20 years. Absolutely love the new channels!
"In two hundred meters, get squashed by an airplane on your head."
TBH, I don't use Apple because I'm a musician-thing, who records his own tracks in his own studio, and because of iTunes, if I had Apple it would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to just put my own songs on my own phone.
And those are definitely my own songs. I remember writing them and yowling them and everything. So it would really really really make me feel like that wasn't my own phone. Like, for some insane reason, I had decided to rent the Apple's phone.
Now I'm a territorial beast, I freely admit that. I like for my things to actually be mine.
And so I choose a phone which actually seems to belong to me. :)
100 percent agree!!! If I RECORD SOMETHING MYSELF, It's MINE to have as many damn copies on what ever number or types of devices I damned well want. Screw DRM, and Screw Apple! REALLY Screw iTunes!!!
Agree about iTunes. Especially, the updater for Windows. Every time I see it, I just sign out or shut down that computer and leave.
Love this format, love the chatty informality and the tangents. Still super informative Simon, but way more chill. Love it so much, it warrants my first ever UA-cam comment. Thank you Simon, you’re fantastic, your delivery is brilliant!
I really like the new loose Simon! Maybe because they don't have sponsers for this channel yet, he can have a few drinks before filming and let it rip. Bravo!
I didnt expect to like these videos as much as I do... great work keep it up
4:13 there was no Hard Disk in the Apple III, I don't think there where any public computers sold with internal HDDs at the time! So no problems with plopping it down!
It dates Simon. I don't even think the 3.5" floppy was out yet.
You could buy a 10MB harddrive for the apple 2 in 1979. Now it would set you back 5 grand... But you could!
Fantastic video, maybe best one on the channel so far.
Thanks :)
I got 7 notifications today from channels I'm subscribed to and 6 of them involve Simon.
Congratulations on taking over my life. 😅
Amazing.
I do not like you reading from a script simply because you always blow me away with how much you memorize. Definitely not a barrier to my enjoyment and definitely not going to stop watching and subbing to all your channels. Simon and team are the best part of UA-cam 💜
Spent hours in line to buy the first iPhone!! Two actually, one for myself and one for my husband at the time. The $200 price cut infuriated me, the $100 Apple Store credit just felt like a whopping insult. So very glad that was a bonus. Never before nor since have I ever bought brand new tech. Learned it’s just not worth it.
Oh man the first iPhone... I worked at an amusement park when they first came out and like 1-2 weeks after launch some douche went on a single car ride. Which means you get on, ride and get off before anyone else in line can. Buuuuttt no Oooo my iPhone, so idiot takes it on and the ride has a huge corkscrew in it.
Yup
In pieces.
The park is about a city block sized with maybe 2k employees (give take a couple hundred) everyone knew in about an hour. God we were happy.
LOVE seeing you and Danny sync thoughts via script.
Loving the casual Simon!
Great job really like the relaxed format and the language and unfiltered opinions keep it going 👍
Thanks :) will do!
Apple lost me when it locked down every mp3 I paid for independently of ITunes like it owned my computer. This is also the reason I'm almost ready to give up modern technology. I'm sick of permanently renting things.
Use a "Wintel" computer, but dump Microsoft Windows and install any fairly common distribution ("distro" for short) of LINUX. I'm actually dual-booting Fedora LINUX and Windows 7 on my laptop. Ubuntu & Debian are also very popular distros of LINUX. LibreOffice.org allows you to open, edit, create, & save documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint formats. All for FREE (software). I'd get rid of Windows completely if I didn't need some Windows-only software for work.
I may eventually reformat my hard drive and run LINUX exclusively and relegate my Windows-only software to either Wine or a VM running inside LINUX. LINUX is faster, and it seems like my laptop battery lasts a little bit longer vs. Windows (on the same laptop).
@@frederickevans4113 Doesn't HAVE to be "WINtel", Just "Intel". Intel based MACs can also be Linux machines. This MAY be a more expensive option, BUT if you have an Intel based Mac AND hate it, (or you LIKE the hardware but hate Apple or MacOS) It CAN be "repurposed" as a Linux box.
never stop this channel please
Loving the new channel Simon and team.
Only real men can pull off the beard/bald combo with such panache.........And I know. Mold that bad boy into a leonidis point. This is SPARTA!!
Great new channel! Keep it up.
Red Bull & Disney are two mainstream companies that come to mind that would naturally have good content.
A less commonly known business that would also be a nice topic and is experiencing rapid growth in the US is Aldi. I would be glad to collaborate on that one as they are a German brand and have lived there and am quite aware of their interesting story. That said, would have to think of topics vs. just a typical "biographics" storyline, I've heard thats a great channel as well ;)
Disney would be a wild ride. Lots of fodder for these corny jokes, and Simon's attitude xD
Aldi...the cheap grocery store?
I was disappointed when they bought out Bottom Dollar which had better quality fresh food.
Thank you Danny for the great script!
No mention for the Pippin. Oh well.
I watched this video in hopes he would mention the Pippin.
Any way i love your all of your channels especially visual politics and biographics they are amazing

I love watching Simon having fun.

Pretty sure the Apple III didn’t have a hard disc drive.

I like the style of these videos Simon is naturally funny just reading the paper marking off the cuff comments and thoughts informative and humorous 👍👍😁
I love the way the like button lit up! I wish it would do that every time. Regardless of my habit to like the video before I see it and put it in full screen mode. I just thought it was really cool.

Rewatching old Business Blaze videos (because Covid, I need laughs). Danny!!! Is this the debut of the Holy Trinity? Simon the Father, Danny the Son (locked in the basement), and Sam the Holy Ghost who throws up brilliant memes. Legends!
My teacher bought an Apple computer for our classroom in 1982. It started a passion in me.
I lived in rural Idaho where being left handed was a sign of the devil.. having such a forward thinking teacher truly changed my life.

I remember the note thingy from way back. I remember the hype, and how it disappeared. lol
All the yuppies were after it like ....well....like me after a ham sandwich....
In the 1990s I dealt with some CompuAdd 286 machines. A fix to a hard drive error was to lift the front of the system unit up a couple inches and drop it. In that case it worked because the problem was the stepper motor that moved the read/write heads having stopped in a dead spot and the drive was mounted vertically at the front of the unit.
In the mid-1990s I worked a helpdesk for a company that did salesforce automation. The customer I supported was a pharmaceutical company who decided to go with Newtons one week before Apple killed them. The term "Egg Freckles" came to be due to the Doonsbury strip.
I loved the palm pilot!
It was my favorite hand held
I love the foreseeing of the Backblaze sponsorship
That hard disk failure sound you made gave me anxiety lol
BUSINESS BLAZE: COME FOR THE BUSINESS

Actually bendgate was/is very much a thing, although it's far more subtle the the phone outright obviously bending. The phone has a massive issue where it flexes back and forth enough over time that some of the electrical connections to the the chip responsible for controlling the touch screen snap, i.e. the chip essentially partly comes off the circuit board.
"One day these videos will be sponsored by BackBlaze," ahh, how far you've come Simon. 🥰
