I would strum a few basic chords, sing my lyrics over them, and record the whole process on a one-track cassette tape recorder, so that I wouldn't forget. Excellent video. for the past 3 years, have recorded using my iPhone and now that I have a Mac Pro, it's more difficult for me to learn GarageBand and seems overwhelming with all the features. Will use your tutorials as a basis for learning. Thanks for sharing.
I've watched a number of videos on UA-cam so I'm not a base level beginner with Garage Band. That said, i really liked your presentation. It was brisk-paced and full of good information. You summarized nicely what I need to do to get going and I totally appreciate that. I will check out your other videos. Thanks again.
Too advanced for me, again. No one seems to show a "total absolute beginner" like myself how to get started with this program. I am so uninformed that even when I click to record a simple testing 1-2-3 using my Macbook microphone" I have no idea if it recorded and if so, how to play it back. When I click to play after, there is nothing there. Note: I do have my Macbook Mic and Macbook speakers set for Garage band. If I can't figure out to play back a simple 1-2-3 testing, how am I ever going to progress any further. Yet every single You-tube Garage band tutorial I have seen seems to assume that there is some basic knowledge of how this program works.
A little research is required. It would be beneficial to familiarise yourself with basic concepts on how audio goes in and out of your computer. Familiarise yourself with basic studio recording concepts and terminology. Google terms like MIDI, DAW,. Find a glossary relating to recording studio terms. Also play and have fun. But remember: don't expect to be able make a hit song straight away, it takes time to learn recording concepts and understand the software. Use your brain if you have one.
thanks Mark, if you're just starting out with GB then this video might also be helpful to you as it is SUPER beginner friendly: ua-cam.com/video/RpOfou3K-L8/v-deo.html

Yes, you can use the mic in your headphones to record audio it might not be the greatest quality but it will still work and then you can add some effects in garageband to make it sound even better
Just figured it out double the play head pos bars type in a number and enter, everytime almost when I ask a question sometimes shortly after that I figure it out
Great information in this. Not exactly what I was looking for (iPad only) but spot on for Mac users and anyone curious about this software in general. Thanks for the vid.
Your in D minor. I could make electric tears adding maj 6 in key of D min ,would be B flat maj 7. powerful and psych-logical depends on adapting too sin waves and ADSR,.takes years before you get massive snarling squalid sound of slabs using garage band.
Sadly, I did not find this helpful, for myself - a complete Beginner. You zip along, at warp-speed, apparently, not realizing, that not all of us take "loops" "quantization" and "midi" as bedrock knowledge. Moving on...

I'm a song-writer just beginning my journey of recording and producing. I've been learning ableton, but it seems like this might be a better place to start for someone who is tech-challenged. This software just seems a lot more simple and comprehensible for beginners than ableton. I'm thinking of trying garageband and then once I understand the process maybe try ableton again. Ableton is just frustrating because it has been hard for me to learn and navigate all the technical stuff... I just want to make music!!! Any thoughts anyone?
Fabulous! Thank you, Charles! Great information. Just got my Mac Mini three days ago and have been fiddling with Garage Band and Logic Pro. I had figured out a few things, but your shortcuts helped immensely. And as you say, just look in the menu if in doubt. :-) You have another new subscriber.
My husband uses Logic Pro X, but I wanted to do some laptop mixes while I am out and about and decided to use GarageBand. I thought it would work similar to Final Cut Pro X (which I use all the time), but, sadly, it does not. Thanks for clearing up a little of my confusion. I found out that you can't mute regions, but have to put each part on a separate track, in order to control the volume. Is that right? That sounds antiquated..... 😳🙄
@@CharlesCleyn I tried that yesterday and it didn’t seem to work. Almost everywhere I looked, I was advised to drag and drop anything that I wanted to mute onto its own track. 🙄🤷🏽♀️ So that’s what I will be trying today. Thanks for a quick reply. 🙌🏾

I've watched a number of videos on UA-cam so I'm not a base level beginner with Garage Band. That said, i really liked your presentation.
It was brisk-paced and full of good information. You summarized nicely what I need to do to get going and I totally appreciate that.
I will check out your other videos. Thanks again.
thanks gregory, i appreciate the positive feedback!

It’s so useful to save as a mp3. thank you so much
Love 💗 and Thank you from India dear. This is my initial time in digital side of music. Helped me a lot. Subscribed and pressed the bell icon as well.
Just play around with it
Agreed
Hey Chuck, I recommend you check out this tutorial I've made that breaks it down for the SUPER beginner: ua-cam.com/video/RpOfou3K-L8/v-deo.html
@@fabuniverse3908 Thanks for your help, I will apply your suggestions and hopefully become proficient at a basic level. Thanks again...
Probably the best tutorial I've ever watched on you tube. Cheers Charles .Thanks
Really appreciate the kind words!
@@CharlesCleyn I just need more RAM now ! :) Would you recommend getting genuine apple RAM or do the competition have good quality alternatives ?
Here's what this 10 minute tutorial allowed me to do!

Thank you so much for making this video I appreciate you, this was very helpful
As a new and frequently bewildered user of Garageband, this has been very helpful. Thanks :)
thanks Mark, if you're just starting out with GB then this video might also be helpful to you as it is SUPER beginner friendly: ua-cam.com/video/RpOfou3K-L8/v-deo.html
@@CharlesCleyn Thanks Charles, I appreciate it.
@@marksargeant6949 you're welcome Mark :)
GarageBand pretty user friendly, I’m not sure how some make music with mouth and computer etc
more power to u
Excellent tutorial Charles. I learned a huge amount in ten minutes. Well done! Please keep up the great work! Subscribed
Thanks for subbing Richard!
Thankyou for this video, I learnt how to operate the app and create a song!
At least you didn't say this was a beginner's tutorial. Thanks for that
some interesting points. what's with the random piano music underneath? it's a bit distracting, thought I had it playing on another channel
Probably a good tutorial for advanced students. Could you recommend a video for beginners ?
yes of course, I recommend this one: ua-cam.com/video/RpOfou3K-L8/v-deo.html
Thanks for making this vid. Im new with recording and just ordered all my hardware. Starting to get familiarized with garagband app while waiting. Keep creating music! God bless
Ok this is a great video. Thank you for the inspiration. And insight.
Would I be able to use my headphones with a mic to record audio? Thanks for the tutorial!
Yes, you can use the mic in your headphones to record audio it might not be the greatest quality but it will still work and then you can add some effects in garageband to make it sound even better
Yes, you can use your headphones WITH a mic at the same time as recording but you'll need an audio interface or a soundcard that has audio in and out.
Thanks a lot for Sharing you Knowledge!
Thanks for this helpful intro tutorial. How does GarageBand compare with Cubase/Cubasis? Are they of comparable quality and ease of use? Thanks.
Thanks. I could use all the help I could get. Hopefully I'll have a track in which I'm using more than an Ipad mic real soon
Just figured it out double the play head pos bars type in a number and enter, everytime almost when I ask a question sometimes shortly after that I figure it out
What is the name of the track in the background? I really love it. As well as your intro video. I appreciate the effort, great guide!
Great video. i have been using garage band for a while without knowing how to really enjoy it.Now it is all falling into place. Thanks
have fun and enjoy making music!
Really useful. Thanks so much. The journey has started.....
i found it very helpful! Thank you!
Charles, thank you once again. Very useful tutorial.
That was helpful
Thank you
Thank you my friend!!!
You’re welcome!
Bro explain way more simple than school (I was so confused when my teacher explained😭😭😭)
Yay! I’m gonna come back to this but super helpful! Thank you
Personally I like doing loops and screen recording them but you do you
Thanks bro for a great video. Which version of Garageband do you recommend in 2023? The latest which is 10.4.8?
Great information in this. Not exactly what I was looking for (iPad only) but spot on for Mac users and anyone curious about this software in general. Thanks for the vid.
Your in D minor. I could make electric tears adding maj 6 in key of D min ,would be B flat maj 7. powerful and psych-logical depends on adapting too sin waves and ADSR,.takes years before you get massive snarling squalid sound of slabs using garage band.
Great job, thanks!
Thank you so much 😀😀😀😀
Feels good to learn
Your background is perfect
This video was so helpful!! thanks
Réalisé avec Garageband : ua-cam.com/channels/-Ej-pK2AwwzJDYkaE4pN-g.html Enjoy !
thanks for the great tutorial video and got my subs!! hope i can make one of my own very soon!
great video thankyou so much! newb musician here, excited to make my own outsider music!
Sadly, I did not find this helpful, for myself - a complete Beginner. You zip along, at warp-speed, apparently, not realizing, that not all of us take "loops" "quantization" and "midi" as bedrock knowledge. Moving on...
Good feedback. Maybe it would help to take an even more beginner approach to garageband?
I'm with you here, I had to turn it off after a while as he explains stuff way too fast. It would be much better if he titled this for intermediate but I guess he wouldn't get as many views by doing that!
@@redson425 stay tuned for a very beginner lesson coming soon
@The feels guy cool, thanks for the thoughts.
Same. I couldn't watch the rest because I couldn't even understand the terms he was using; midi etc. I appreciate him trying though.
Yes, I agree, GB is a perfect place to start!
omg thank you sooo much for that video!!!!
Charles this is awesome and love your music, but have new version on ipad, so need 1 on 1 and willing to pay for your time to expedite. Regards Karl
Fabulous! Thank you, Charles! Great information. Just got my Mac Mini three days ago and have been fiddling with Garage Band and Logic Pro. I had figured out a few things, but your shortcuts helped immensely. And as you say, just look in the menu if in doubt. :-) You have another new subscriber.
Nice detailed and concise video, thank you
Thank you
Fantastic Stuff, Thank you very Much this helped a lot with the learning process and the Doing Process.
Fabulous...thank you!
It would be useful to know which version you were talking about at the start.
Wow, great video!!! Never seen someone who is so informative on so short time! Thanks man
That’s so nice to hear because this is what I’m trying to get across in this video so thanks very much.
Hey, you can me regions. Try doing control + m on the region. That should work.
