It's been quite a while since I've seen any of red jacket, but I feel it got a lot better as it went on - the final batch of episodes looked significantly smoother than the first.
Agreed. The first four episodes of the series are so classic, I wish they would've stuck with that atmosphere for the rest of the series. The new "Woman Called Fujiko" anime is probably the closest we'll get to those early episodes.
At 8:26 there's a quick cameo of Hayao Miyazaki (left) and Yasuo Otsuka (right background). Also, that's the Miyazaki Clan again at 8:37, including wife Akemi Ota (herself an accomplished and pioneering animator) and son Goro. Small world! Thanks for the video review, I'm a big fan of the original Lupin III series, and can't wait for the US DVD release this spring. I'll be posting this on Ghibli Blog later tonight, so many thanks!
What I find interesting about the series is the general quality of direction overall. Though I like the Miyazaki/Takahata episodes, they're not as inventive, complex, and well-directed as the early Osumi episodes that, to me, make the series worth watching. More edge, more emphasis on the character development, and more of Osumi's excellent understanding of film noir and adult drama-I love his episodes, as opposed to liking them. He's never gets enough credit for his impact on Lupin in general.
@icetyrant We never actually got Lupin on tv in the UK, so I think most people here only really know the franchise from Castle of Cagliostro and Secret of Mamo. It's a shame really, I think this first series might do okay if it had a DVD release in English.
Yeah, I talked a little bit about the Fujiko series in my video on the spring season. I think it's exactly the shake up that the franchise has needed for a long time. I'm not sure if I prefer it to the previous incarnations of Lupin, but it's good to see someone put a new spin on the series and I agree they can both sit alongside each other perfectly well - it's like getting a new actor in to play James Bond.
The first version of s1 I picked up had really bad subs as well, but there was another group that did better subs for it more recently. Of course, the best and most honourable thing to do now would be to buy the official US release :)
Ach, I dunno. I suppose Miyazaki was still quite a young guy at that time, he'd have gained more experience by the time he did the two red jacket eps and Cagliostro.
Thank you :) I'm actually a big fan of Cobra, but I've yet to make a proper video on the original series - I've always been holding on in the hope that we might get better English subtitles first, as I find the current ones a bit ropey. I did make a short video about Cobra back when the new series started up though - I'll put a link in the description. If you're interested, I'm planning another Lupin video at the moment as well, so hopefully that will be my next anime review on this channel.
You're very fortunate! Despite a (short lived) anime channel in more recent years, we barely get any anime on tv in the UK. About the only things I can remember from when I was growing up are Ulysees 31 and Mysterious Cities of Gold.
I think the new series (A woman called Mine Fujiko) reverts to the dark storytelling of the early episodes you speak of. Personally I think its a better fit for the series.
I really enjoyed this! It maakes for a neat introduction to Lupin's debut and the franchise it blossomed into. I've always found the sheer amount of Lupin III anime to be off-putting. But this has me thinking I may just add some to my collection.
+BrainjarTV Thank you :) By all means, give it a shot though man - the first series is fairly short compared to the later ones, or alternatively, watching Cagliostro and Secret of Mamo back to back would give you a good overview of what to expect.
@roothands I ran out of characters. I meant to say, I wouldn't recommend Cagliostro as an INTRODUCTION to Lupin III as a franchise. I'm also surprised to hear that so many people dislike Mamo because that (well, aside from the pilot film made in the late 60s) was my first exposure to the franchise
agreed the kind of fujiko i like and respected was the greenjacket fujiko her emotion streaked was great like if she thought she killed lupin for good she was sad and felt guilty and also she sometimes saved lupin from being killed etc. i was angry they got rid of it and then they turned fujiko into the red jacket fujiko.i didn't mind red jacket fujiko until i saw ep69 of lupin III red jacket in that episode she thought she killed lupin for good and she didn't feel guilty and she did not care!
First started googling about Lupin III after watching The Woman Named Mine Fujijo. This review got me watching Castle of Cagliostro, Secret of Mamo, and now I'm halfway through the green jacket series! Great review!
@gamesDAMNED No worries :) I figured it was Hayao Miyazaki in the Citroen right enough, but I'd no idea that Otsuka appeared as well, much less the rest of Miyazaki's family! I think that was the last episode right enough, so they probably just wanted to have some fun with it.
@asdertert12345 They are indeed, yeah. The little jingle that plays over the 'director gets the sack' card was from the second series, but other than that, they're all from season one.
Inspiration for these characters: Lupin III - James Bond (secret agent) & Arsene Lupin (phantom thief) Daisuke Jigen - James Coburn (cowboy) Fujiko Mine - Mie Hama (femme fatal) Goemon Ishikawa XIII - Seiji Miyaguchi (samurai) Koichi Zenigata VII - Zenigata Heiji (police detective) Villains such as crime organization, yakuzas, syndicates, and mafias from different countries
@bcoffin12345 Thank you :) I'm hoping to cover more of the Lupin franchise in the future, but I've still got lots to watch as well. If you're interested though, my best three picks so far would be; Castle of Cagliostro, The Fuma Conspiracy and Dead or Alive.
@Wolveroo Thank you :) Afraid I've still not picked up the DVD for Episode 0 though. I was thinking about trying to do another review covering several of the films/specials in one video, so I'll see if I can include that one.
@KillerOrange87 Thank you :) The early eps are a strange experience, but they're well worth it to see the series slowly taking shape. I'm always glad to hear that older series are still being re-released somewhere in the world as well - it's just a shame that I don't think there's much chance of an English language release for series one.
I've seen a clip of that one - the difference in animation quality between it and the early part of series 2 is remarkable. I haven't seen anywhere streaming it in English, but it is out there if you're willing to look at other means of downloading it.
wow stumbled on this by complete accident, I have seen the first series a few years ago, and i agree with everything said here. Really extremely well done review of the series
I love the first season..especially the first half. It's dark and gritty just like the manga..than it got silly. The new series is so cool that they bring back the first series atmosphere. I have the first series on dvd with terrible subtitles.
@Areashiftybun Eastern Star isn't the one that got the license for the 1971 Lupin the 3rd series, Discotek Media is as far i know, The show will get a complete series release, the show will be be remastered, both version of the Pilot Film will be included though unfortunately the show will be Subbed only
I actually talked a little bit about the new series in my video on the Spring 2012 season. I was very impressed with it and I think it's exactly what the franchise has needed for a very long time. Whether the darker interpretation fits Lupin better or not, I wouldn't like to say, but I don't think there's any reason why the two versions can't sit alongside each other.
@SuperKingNova I think it's just the parts that have already had a US release that Netflix has. The Lupin tv series they've got is the second one (red jacket).
The easiest one to get legitimately at the moment is the first season, which has a very nice dvd box-set that you should find anywhere that sells R1 anime discs. Sadly none of the Lupin tv series are legally streamed to the UK at the moment, but if you were to google it, you should find alternative streaming sources quite readily.
episode thirteen was by far the best episode yet something was definitely at stake and was a great episode something completely new for the show my second favorite would be the episode where lupins arrested and gets the death sentence its so realistic and dark humored another classic episode
This was a great review. It was both informative and entertaining at the same time. I never knew the early episodes were that dark. The Lupin I'm used to is is very different, so the first series should prove to be an interesting watch. They're actually releasing it on DVD in my country (Finland), though only the first 12 eps are available at the moment. I'll certainly get them when I have the time.
That's a good question - I must admit, I've actually not seen all that many of them myself either. If you liked Cagliostro though, I would definitely recommend the Fuma Conspiracy. It's not as sophisticated a film, but it's very close to Cagliostro in style and tone. They're slightly darker, but First Contact and Dead or Alive are well worth picking up too.
Discotek's releasing the original in the US soon! Everyone here, pick it up! Also, interesting choice of opening themes for your review. OTOKO WA DAREMO LONELY SOLDIER BOY~
@bluemidget276 Thank you :) I've only ever read a very small amount of the manga and I think that was from the second run (Shin Lupin III), so I wasn't actually aware the original was as dark as that - sounds like it's almost pushing into Golgo territory there. I'm hoping to come back and look at other parts of the franchise in future videos as well, particularly the pink-jacket series as it's another one that doesn't seem to get mentioned very often by English-speaking fans.
@tonylin2 Fair question. Mostly, I just liked the sound of it, but it also kind of amused me, seeing as I rarely talk about things which actually suck. Most people get that it's ironic, so I've stuck with it.
Nice review. Seen the new "Lupin: Fujiko" series yet? Certainly more the successor of the "darker" Lupin as in Mamo, etc. After I saw that, I realized - there are "two Lupins" - the original, and as envisioned by Miazaki in Cagliostro etc. ( yes, perhaps the best ever ) but that they both can be appreciated in their own way.
It's my favourite Stallone film :) Nah, I am aware of it, I just didn't think to mention it when I was recording the video. Strictly speaking, I suppose it would be the first a lot of people ever saw of Lupin, even if they didn't really know who he was at the time.
The original Lupin series isn't very obscure and it has in fact seen MULTIPLE releases in the united states and europe. Just recently actually there was a new re-mastered release of the first series re-subbed and with extra made by a forum of dedicated Lupin fans.
@SuperKingNova It's cool, don't let me put you off if you want to give the second season a try. The Lupin tv episodes are nearly all self-contained, so there's no need to worry about missing out on back story or anything. The first series is a little harder to get ahold of, but if you try googling "Lupin series 1", you should be able to find it without too much bother.
Yeah, really the entire second half of green jacket was directed by Miyazaki and Takahata - everything from ep8 onwards (excluding eps 9 and 12) was theirs. As far as I know though, there were only two red jacket eps that Miyazaki was involved with - I think it's 145 and 155.
Wow, GOOD review (you have a better understanding of Lupin III than most people I come across). I think that the first eight episodes of this series, and the first movie (Secret of Mamo) are probably the truest to the original material Monkey Punch created, but that's not to say that the Miyazaki take on the character/material isn't good. I'd agree that Cagliostro is an amazing movie (Miyazaki's best film IMO) but I wouldn't recommend it myself because it doesn't reflect Lupin's true personality
Yeah, I think that's probably not a bad analogy. I've not read enough of the manga to really judge how close the Fujiko series is, but it's certainly much closer in tone to The Secret of Mamo than the recent tv specials. Also, if you liked Cagliostro, be sure to pick up The Fuma Conspiracy. If anything, it's even more Indy-esque :)
Huh, so Miyazaki & Takahata worked on the second part of the green jacket series a swell? That's interesting. I thought they only worked on the later episodes of the red jacket series. What episodes of the green jacket did they direct?. Did they do all the episodes from the second half of the green jacket series to the end of the red jacket one? I know they didn't have anything to do with the pink jacket series though.
@AlmightyChewbaccer I know, I would have put money on that never happening... Still, I wish them all the best with it - I'll certainly be buying a copy.
I saw the first series when it aired on a TV on a japanese channel last year and it was my first time watching Lupin III. I actually recommend it if you are just starting off watching Lupin III. Like you said, it's different from the current stuff so you're better off watching this first instead of watching it later.
Very well done sir , I caught your video on my PS Vita last night. You covered the pros and cons quite well , not many of us old schoolers around these days. Have you covered Space Cobra yet?
I know the series had been released before in continental Europe, but, aside from the current DVD set, when was it released in the US (fansubs notwithstanding)?
@Shyreenify oh I loved bobobobo it was funny and made sense lupine I would love to see but I wouldnt know where to begin looking but at least I know I can read subtitles fairly well
Sorry mate, somebody flagged your comment as spam there. I'll really need to go back and watch the first half of the series again sometime - bizarrely, my main memories of it now are Fujiko shooting at passers by from the speedboat and Lupin flooding the female toilets. I think it would have be interesting to see what would have happened if he'd been allowed to direct the entire season though. The new series is really showing how well Lupin can work when it is darker and more adult.
I always check youtube out for something new on lupin and hadn't run into this until today. I have always been a huge Lupin fan since i first saw it (it was Mamo) and i loved it. I havn't heard or seen anything on the original tv series but i have been looking for it. This is a great review telling me that i need to look harder. Thanks for the info and great job. BTW netflix has Cagliostro up on instant queue now... Have you seen 0 mission before? It's a telling of how the gang all met.
Nice review. What would you say are some of the best lupin lll movies and why? Ive seen castle of cagliostro and it was really great but i'm looking for some more lupin movies to watch and i know there is a lot out there, so it's hard to pick which are the best.
@roothands Thank you :) I do understand where you're coming from, but I think Cagliostro is just a much more accessible film, even if it is undoubtedly Miyazaki's Lupin rather than Monkey Punch's. I may be wrong about Mamo, but it's just the impression I get from reading reviews online that it seems to meet with a pretty mixed reception. Personally, it's a film I did warm to on repeat viewings, but the first time I saw it, I kinda hated it. (continued in next post)
Since today is the *8* year anniversary of when you posted this review, I decided to stop putting it off. 🎂 EDIT- 10:09 A.M.: *finishes video 16 minutes laster* This was interesting. I might want to watch the original Lupin series one day.
Fantastic review. I really enjoyed it. It does start out very dark and serious the first series, yet so much lighter than the Manga.(The whole Lupin being a rapist thing and at one point Fujiko has killed over a 1000 men) I like the lighter stories, but I don't hate the others. Quite interested to hear your thoughts on the "Pink" series and the film. Keep up the work. I
@Deadeyedavid177 Oh I couldn't agree harder. BoBoBo-Bo-BoBo in English if a freaking sin. All the awesome japanese pop culture references gone. The show makes even less sense in English than in Japanese and that's saying a lot.
oddly enough I find the animation has aged better than the later red jacket series, that was more popular and lasted much longer
It's been quite a while since I've seen any of red jacket, but I feel it got a lot better as it went on - the final batch of episodes looked significantly smoother than the first.
I have heard that
Oh glorious day, Discotek Media has released the first Lupin series on DVD!
Agreed. The first four episodes of the series are so classic, I wish they would've stuck with that atmosphere for the rest of the series. The new "Woman Called Fujiko" anime is probably the closest we'll get to those early episodes.
Enjoyed this. Guess I was lucky in that when very young, I got to watch the 1st series broadcast on Italian TV. Been hooked ever since!
At 8:26 there's a quick cameo of Hayao Miyazaki (left) and Yasuo Otsuka (right background). I know Lupin but not to this depth, never saw the 1969 series but everything after. Thanks for breaking this down
Areashiftybun!!!!!!!!!
"i *like* obscure things"
that's how i'm going to explain my interest in this show :D
I totally agree. I believe it's Discotek media that just released it. I will support it. It's just very pricey at the moment.

@lemontheonly1 It's not out on DVD in English yet, but it's slated for a Spring 2012 release in the US.
I've only seen the Castel of Cagliostro, but boy did I love that film. Hope I can see more of Lupin and the gang.
Can't wait for this to be out on DVD this summer
I really enjoyed this! It maakes for a neat introduction to Lupin's debut and the franchise it blossomed into. I've always found the sheer amount of Lupin III anime to be off-putting. But this has me thinking I may just add some to my collection.
+BrainjarTV Thank you :) By all means, give it a shot though man - the first series is fairly short compared to the later ones, or alternatively, watching Cagliostro and Secret of Mamo back to back would give you a good overview of what to expect.
Oddly enough, I've never seen Cagliostro! I may just take your advice there.
That was awesome history, thanks. A lot of this, way before my time.
@roothands
I ran out of characters. I meant to say, I wouldn't recommend Cagliostro as an INTRODUCTION to Lupin III as a franchise. I'm also surprised to hear that so many people dislike Mamo because that (well, aside from the pilot film made in the late 60s) was my first exposure to the franchise

Watched this dubbed to spanish back in the 90s, awesome stuff. The episode of Lupan scaping jail is the best of the series, IMO
You actually said all the names right, props!
@asdertert12345 They are indeed, yeah. The little jingle that plays over the 'director gets the sack' card was from the second series, but other than that, they're all from season one.
I can't be the only one who thinks Goemon is a tragic character.
Inspiration for these characters:
Lupin III - James Bond (secret agent) & Arsene Lupin (phantom thief)
Daisuke Jigen - James Coburn (cowboy)
Fujiko Mine - Mie Hama (femme fatal)
Goemon Ishikawa XIII - Seiji Miyaguchi (samurai)

The US DVD box set was released yesterday. Be sure to pick up a copy and let us know (and by that, I mean me) what you think.
Hah, cheers. Didn't originally mean to use it in all the episodes, but the song's just sort of stuck.

brooklyn560 same, its more closer to the original manga then any other adaptations in the franchise.
Mamo is the best of the series.
Interesting. I can understand why, I guess - he has a different sort of personality. Miazaki is an "auteur director" - he makes a project his own.
I wish I could watch the final episode of "Lupin the 3rd: Farewell My Beloved Lupin", which was back in 1980. That's episode 155.
@Motsenschadt Thanks, that's nice of you to say so. Too bad I'm actually from Glasgow >.
@Shyreenify
oh I loved bobobobo it was funny and made sense lupine I would love to see but I wouldnt know where to begin looking but at least I know I can read subtitles fairly well
Sorry mate, somebody flagged your comment as spam there.
You are a man of discerning taste, sir :)
Nice review. What would you say are some of the best lupin lll movies and why?
Ive seen castle of cagliostro and it was really great but i'm looking for some more lupin movies to watch and i know there is a lot out there, so it's hard to pick which are the best.
Thanks :) I do try.
Oh, Wank? is that an order or a cuss word. Ha!
Since today is the *8* year anniversary of when you posted this review, I decided to stop putting it off. 🎂
EDIT- 10:09 A.M.: *finishes video 16 minutes laster*
This was interesting. I might want to watch the original Lupin series one day.
@Deadeyedavid177 I've still never actually seen that one, at least not beyond the characters being in Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS.
I
I personally love part 1
@Areashiftybun My attention span is fine, I'm just a picky bastard about pronunciation.
I hate how hairy some of their hands are. It's just so strange.
You don't really see people in anime with hairy hands anymore
You have my sympathies, such a short attention span must be a great hardship for you.
@Convoyman007new I think it's unlikely man, but I guess you never know.
Thank you :)
Heh, will do man :)
@GPowtlaw2 Thank you :)
@Areashiftybun good lord, I thought you were Polish.
@Deadeyedavid177 Oh I couldn't agree harder. BoBoBo-Bo-BoBo in English if a freaking sin. All the awesome japanese pop culture references gone. The show makes even less sense in English than in Japanese and that's saying a lot.
