Thank you very much for this, Mr. Nolan. I grew up with Jim Aparo's Batman in the 70s and early 80s, and for me Batman is the Batman of Jim Aparo, (and to a degree Jose Luis Garcia Lopez and Giordano).. . Also enjoyed him doing Aqua man, Wildcat, Phantom Stranger and Sgt Rock. Jim Aparo and John Byrne on Batman was a great combo. I love how Jim Aparo drew Bruce Wayne. That is how Bruce Wayne should look. I feel Mr. Aparo is somewhat underrated among legendary artists. And you gotta love a guy who loved Seinfeld!
Jim and Marshall rogers were my first and favorite Batman artists. I wouldn't learn Neal Adams by name until the early 2000s. And on the Greatest Batman Stories edition
A great retrospective of Jim's career. His art just worked on every character: The Phantom Stranger, The Spectre, Aquaman and, of course, Batman. Much as I don't like Batman in a team book, either, I was a fan of "Batman and the Outsiders". Jim's art and Mike Barr not taking things too seriously helped. Despite not inking himself on his return to Batman, writers like Jim Starlin, Marv Wolfman, Alan Grant and Doug Moench gave him some great stories to work with and illustrate.
Jim was doing all the covers when i started reading comics. He was only doin interiors in B&B. For me he will always bethe definitive Batman artist. In my minds eye, I see his Batman. In the 80's, I loved Jims trademark batman face. No white lines as the brows at times. Just all black with the white eye slits. And the way he drew the lower lip made Batman look very grim and totally no nonsense. His anatomy was also very strong. I wasnt a fan of his 90s work but early Jim in the 70s and 80s is just off the hook.
Regarding Jim Aparo being offered work at Marvel, Denny O’Neill mentioned in numerous interviews that when he was the Marvel editor/writer of Daredevil post-Frank Miller that he tried hard to get Aparo to draw it.
I don't care for his art, at least the Batman stuff he did later. The earlier stuff is much better but I think he was either too old or stopped caring after a while.
I loved Aparo's work, he's on my Mt Rushmore of Batman artists. Did you know he did an issue of Batman that was inked by Bill Siekiewicz? #534. Not the paring you'd think you would ever see team together, but the issue is pretty cool to look at. EDIT: Just got to the part of the stream where you mentioned this lol
Hey Graham, backer of both of your books. Off topic, I was watching Ethan's stream talking to Dale Keown and Dale is excited to bring back Pitt but his I only problem is he needs a writer and for some reason I thought of you. Wouldn't hurt to talk to Dale and Ethan if your interested. Just saying:) Can't wait for Alian Alamo mate, cheers and good drinking.
In fact Graham...this may be a bit cynical, but get a nice attractive girl as co-host for a bit and get some rapport going and she could deal with comments/superchat etc and watch the subscribers and views go up! I think you might need someone a bit edgy to offset your more respectable personality!

Aparo was my favorite Batman artist.
Loved his Spectre. Read it wayyyyyy back in the 80s when they made the Wrath of the Spectre 4 issues.

Thank you for sharing those stories and memories of Jim Aparo.
Much appreciated. :)
I was addicted to Aparo's run on Batman.
This was awesome, I really dig learning about the history of comics from Graham
The only fan club I ever joined Jim Aparo! Simply The Best!
Mr Aparo was my artist growing up a truly amazing talent ...
This was a great stream. Aparo is a legend!
Love his work!
My favourite Batman artist of all time, that comic vs the KG-Beast was the first that i ever read. Just amazing.

Jim Aparo was my favorite artist, OMG how I loved that man's work. Batman to me looked best under Jim's pencil.
Jim Aparo to me represented my childhood love of Batman. My moms first comic she bought me from the newsstand was Batman 291.
Please Graham do Norm Breyfogle!!!!

That makes sense. Jim told me (he said it was Stan but likely whom ever was EIC at the time) wanted him to come to Marvel on an exclusive contract.
I was never a big Jim Aparo fan ... I will now need to give him a second look.

I liked Aparo’s Superman. It reminded me of Christopher Reeves.
Bob Haney wrote some of the most entertaining stories ever.

Thanks, pal!
Yeahhh Graham would rock!!
this was great, it's hard to find details about Jim
Do you know if he was of Italian descent?
🌟
It does not matter if it's right.
It only needs to LOOK right. ;)
This is a great stream! Why are the numbers so low? Maybe it needs a bit of a shot in the arm...like a co-host to bounce off or something??
i think Jim may have been the best contributor to batman post adams

Thanks but I’m not willing to go that route. I appreciate you tuning in though.
