  • If your baby’s sleep has suddenly changed - maybe they’re waking more often, waking earlier, or taking shorter naps during the day - there may be a very specific reason why.
    Baby sleep patterns change as they get older. Often just as we feel like our baby has a good sleep routine that’s actually predictable, they go ahead and change it.
    One of the most common reasons for a change in your baby’s naps or their sleep schedule is because they are ready to drop one of their naps.
    But here’s the thing…
    If you try to drop a nap before your baby is ready, it can completely throw their sleep schedule out of rhythm. And when that happens it’s hard to get back on track.
    So you want to make sure that when you do drop that nap, your baby is actually ready for it.
    But how do you know when your baby is ready to remove one of their naps from their sleep schedule?
    That’s exactly what you’ll learn in this video!
    You’ll learn 5 key signs that will help you identify whether your baby’s sleep is changing in a way that means they no longer need one of their naps.
    If you’re struggling getting your baby to sleep like they used to, check out this video and see if it’s because they are ready to drop a nap.

      Hi Emma I would love to see a video of your input on what you think of sleeping training for a baby. There are is a lot of YT information out there. My partner wants me to start sleep training at night with our 7 month old, I am old schooled my parents and their parents didn't have the internet nor milestones when they were raising kids, nor were told to sleep train their babies. Yet all us turned out perfectly.

      My daughter turned 9 months old a week ago and stopped having her second nap 3 weeks ago. Nothing I did would make her go to sleep and both of us were getting upset trying so I stopped. I'm worried it's too early to drop to 1 nap.

      Hi @@andrewenglish3810 this is a great question!
      For some people sleep training is great and for other people it just isn't for them. It really depends on if you want change your little ones current sleep. For example if your little is waking during the night multiple times and you are happy to feed and rock them back to sleep then that is great. But if you want your little one settle to sleep at night independently and wake up less during the night then you might want to try some sleep training. It is important to remember though that at 7 months of age it is completely normal if your little one is waking up for a feed (the feed usually is in the early hours of the morning). If it is a long breastfeed or large formula feed then your little one still needs a feed during the night.

    Hi everyone, I work in childcare and see a lot of questions on which naps to drop. In most childcare settings there are routines in regards to naptime.
    Baby's who still take 3 naps, will go to bed around 9.30, 12.30 and 15.30 (3.30pm), but it might change a little depending on how long they slept for.
    Baby's taking 2 naps will go to bed around 10.00 after a fruit snack, have lunch after waking up, and have a snack around 14.30 and go back to bed around 15.00(3pm).
    Baby's and toddlers taking 1 nap will have a fruit snack around 9.30, lunch around 11.30, naptime between 12.30/13.00(1pm), and a snack when they wake up around 15.00/15.30(3pm/3.30pm).
    Hope this helps.

    I really needed this THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!!! My third baby has been my most challenging and really made me realise that I’m not super mum. My ten month old appears tired for his three naps… but fights them and then his afternoon naps he will sleep for three hours which is so close to his bedtime and then he plays in his cut for two hours and will fall asleep at like9-9:30!! And he is also now waking up 6-6:20 in the morning which isn’t too bad but he WAS waking at 7:30… so def need to drop a nap…. Might be that morning one or high is typically two hours after he wakes…. I’ll push that one because that one is usually a cat nap

    Hello from Mother Russia! Thanks for the video. I have an interesting situation, about tummy time. Our pediatrist recommend us to do Tummy time 30 min before feed and/or after 90 min after feeding. But feeding time takes a really lot of time. So the situation is: baby sleep through all this recommended time window. She sleeps before feed and after. Or wake up before 90 mins lasts. We dont think that it is good idea to force baby to wake up to make a tummy time. I dont know what to do, I fear that we have lack of tummy time. Baby is only 1 month, and she held her head only for 3-6 sec.

    Thanks for the video. What do you recommend for a toddler who refuses to nap but still really needs one? He'll be 3 in February, so he falls in the age range of not needing a nap. If he doesn't nap, though, he's super cranky and doesn't eat dinner well because he's too tired to eat. He'll almost always fall asleep in the car if we take him somewhere around his nap time. He just will not nap in his room no matter how consistent we are with the routine.

    Nap have become more difficult for my nearly 14-month-old! Last weekend it took nearly 30 minutes of playing in her crib before she fell asleep… I noticed she tends to want to drop her morning nap (she wakes up at 7:30/8, so it makes sense), but she is way too tired to wait until 2 or 3 for her afternoon nap. We’re trying a midday nap, just after lunch, and it’s been working so far! I’m thankful, because the first six months of sleep were complicated but since then she’d been such a good sleeper, I’m not ready to struggle with sleep again ahahah!

      Hi Veronique so glad you worked out to move the 1 nap to the middle of the day. When bub's go from 2 to 1 nap a day we aim to move the nap to the middle of the day, because you're right the afternoon nap is simply too late in the late and results in lots of tears!

      @TriGrutt It is very important to start with a small tub. For babies to feel comfortable in the water they need to feel the walls of the tub. I also recommend using a towel in the water while bathing your baby at the beginig. For babies to feel comfortable in the water they must not be completely uncovered. Use a towel to cover the baby's feet while washing his hands and then the other way round.

    Thanks Emma! My baby is now 15 months and started creche 2 weeks ago, he doesn't nap well in the creche in the morning (45 minutes only where he'd normally nap 1.5 hours at home). He's ok to skip the second nap if he naps 1.5-2hours during the day (11.30am-1.30pm). Should I keep his second nap in the afternoon if he only nap 45 minutes during the day in the creche? I just worry he would be over tired without an afternoon nap if he doesn't have enough morning nap in the creche, but if I put him down for the afternoon nap he won't go to sleep until 10pm which I think is too late. Help please!

If he goes to bed before noon, his afternoon sleep gets pushed very late, and if he does not take a nap in the morning, he is grumpy and yawning at lunchtime…I have given up and just let him nap whenever he feels like, one day it is mornings, another day it is right after lunch, sometimes he also does both a morning and a late afternoon nap…

    Great timing for us! Baby will be 12 months in a couple of weeks. At 10 months we started getting split nights for a few weeks, then she got sick. When she got better, it took another couple of weeks to get back to her normal 2 nap timing. When she turned 11 months we started having trouble getting her to sleep, she resists sleep and still wants to play. But she goes to sleep easy for both naps. Bedtime after a 4 hour wake window takes 1-2 hours. Her last wake window ends up being 5-6 hours. But surely she's too young for one nap?

And then it's bedtime again at 7pm, with the hope they sleep untill 7am.

      Hi @Tom Kins thanks so much for watching and your lovely comment. So glad these videos are helpful.
      There could be a few things leading to your little one's tears. A few things to rule out is hunger (is he feeding well?), sickness, and over-tiredness, plus others. Like you said it could be teething but generally this happens 6 months of age (some bubs do get their first teeth earlier though).
      He could also be going through the 4 month sleep regression (which can start at 3 months of age). Here is a link to the video I have made on the 4 month sleep regression which you might find helpful: ua-cam.com/video/9OrwbXU6FXk/v-deo.html
      It might be helpful to watch my video on 3 month old milestones because I cover what generally happens at 3 months in regards to sleep and the recommended wake windows. Once you know this information you can keep an eye on your little one's early tired signs and awake time to ensure he is not getting overtired. Here is the link to this video - ua-cam.com/video/NT71VUpWYCY/v-deo.html
      Also at this age catnapping (short daytime naps) become extremely common. I also have a video on this topic which you might find helpful:ua-cam.com/video/v5qQVkOtpX4/v-deo.html
      Hopefully this information helps!

      @@EmmaHubbard thank you so much for your response. I took your advice by offering more feeds and naps, and it seems to be working. He's also going down much better at night, too. He is a real cat-napper in the day, so naps can be a bit all over the place. But already we seem to be getting into a good system at bedtimes, and he is able to sleep for larger chunks of time. Thanks again for all your helpful content - I've recommended you to my sister-in-law, who is expecting in June!

    Hi Emma ..is it possible for a baby to have only one nap routine after 9 months? My baby has been taking only 2 naps a day ever since she was 3 months old.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Sana this isn’t typical but that doesn’t mean it is wrong. If your little one is happy and settled when awake (so isn’t tired and grumpy) then that is completely fine (and what we all want).

    This is so timely for me, I had no idea we had to transition the baby, I thought she'd naturally drop a nap on her own. She's almost 15 months and her sleep has been really horrible for the past month. Her afternoon nap has gotten later pushing her bedtime back. However if she does not have that nap she wakes up maybe an hour after bedtime and is really difficult to resettle. Help! Should I try to drop the nap?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @April T it does sound like she may be ready to drop the afternoon nap. Just make sure she is having the nap in the middle of her day (so you will need to push that morning nap back - you can do this slowly) and you may need to bring the bedtime a little bit earlier to avoid over-tiredness.
      She might be waking an hour after bedtime because she is overtired or she has fallen asleep with you beside her (singing or reading a book) and then partially woken between cycles and noticed you're not there. This would be distressing for her (it's like if I removed your favourite pillow while you slept- you would wake to find it). Hope that helps!

    We are having such a trouble to transition from 2 to 1 nap. She is 13 m old. The short naps and late bed time started right after the 1st birthday. I really don’t know what to do. Wake windows stopped working after the birthday

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Aysun this transition can be difficult.
      It can be helpful to gradually move the morning nap later (with the aim that it will start to happen in the middle of the day) and move the bedtime a little bit earlier to ensure your little one is not too tired before bed. Then as your little one adjusts to having 1 nap a day you can move the bedtime back to its usual time.
      Hope that helps!

    Are the naps same for normal versus prematurely born babies?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @Preeti Verma! If a baby was born premature then what we are aiming for in regards to total sleep, wake window times, amount of naps etc is based on the little ones corrected age (original due date) not birth age. Hope that makes sense!

      @@EmmaHubbard yes dear, thank you for asking.
      I wanna ask one more question if u don't mind me asking it
      My baby is currently few days shy of 11 months and her corrected age is 9 month 6 days as of today. According to age milestones she should be recognising when someone calls her name, but some times she responds and sometimes doesn't, though she imitates actions that are easy for her to.
      Are developmental milestones like recognising by name also are as per corrected age for prematurely born babies?

    My baby (almost 3 months old) wakes up for his naps whenever he touches his bed... Only wants to sleep in our arms. He also catnaps a lot and on a good day we only manage for him to have 2 longer naps during the day. He's constantly fussy and overtired 😭😭 Some nights he sleeps really Well but not always... any ideas?

    • @eeffiieejj
      @eeffiieejj 2 роки тому +1

      It might be a good idea to teach your baby to fall asleep in bed, so you don't have to transfer him.
      Something that seems to work for almost all baby's (I work in childcare) is to use one arm to gently 'rock' your baby (put your hand on their belly and move side to side, some baby's like it when you hold their hands across their chest, makes them feel more secure) and with your other hand stroke your baby's head, while making sushing noises.
      When he falls asleep let go slowly.
      Once he is able to fall asleep on his own better, you can start getting into a stricter naptime routine, but it is okay if that doesn't happen right away. Plenty of 3 month olds we get in daycares still sleep on demand.
