    Sokoninaru! Awesome! :) Even though her playing style is totally different from my own (I'm mainly a fingerstyle player with some slap), Misaki is one of the people I very much look up to as a bassist. She is just amazing!
    The bass she uses is in fact not a Fender Jazzbass but a Mayones Jabba 4 Classic. You can see it if you take a closer look at the headstock. Also it's a 24 fret bass and I think it can be run active, too. I totally agree though: Misaki's sound always is AMAZING! But you're not entirely wrong of course: The basis of this model IS very much inspired by the Fender J.
    Now before you even ask: Yes, they DO pull this stuff off live just fine!
    They also have changed drummers since the time of this video. The new drummer even shares vocal duties so they now have THREE voices to harmonize and play around with.

    Is a jazz bass body but is not a fender. This band is so powerfull, actually I learn this song on bass, it took me like 3 months, this song is really really hard to play, well if i'm honest all of their songs are super hard to play in any instrument. Please guys check their song called Saitei, for me their best one

    This group is so ridiculously talented! One of their songs called 9999 has one of the most unique drum techniques I've ever seen. It's not that it's even super difficult, but it's just so out of the box. He is using both feet to play double kick rhythms, but you hear hihat chirps over the top. When the camera focuses on him he's using one hand to play the kit, and using the other to raise and lower the top hihat by grabbing the top of the shaft rather than using the pedal as one normally would.

      I think you’re talking about their cover of senbonzakura! The original vocaloid song is pretty simple in comparison, but Sokoninaru re-arranges are always top notch lol

    Before Sokoninaru, the band "tricot" similarly uses complex/changing time signatures and is very creative. However, Sokoninaru takes those ideas and turns them up to 11. Sokoninaru also did an amazing cover of A.L.I.E.N by Maximum the Hormone, which is a very metal song with screams.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT Рік тому +3

      I also recommend tricot, both are very good. Tricot's newer stuff probably has a bit more of a poppy edge, but their songs generally still have complex sections as well under the more poppy vocals. They don't like the term "Math Rock" themselves, but I would absolutely put them in that range of rock music, just like Sokoninaru (and Paranoid Void, toe and Jyocho to name a couple of other bands).
      Sokoninaru also did a cover of a tricot song with them basically acting the way tricot do on stage.

    My favourite band of recent years, there’s so much content in each and every one of their songs , most bands spend an entire career making content that SOKONINARU puts more than that into each and every of their songs

    Believe the weird timing part is quarter note triplets (in unison) for a couple of measures, so the four-count measure has six “beats” instead of four. If you try to count the four beats in your head through the triplets (hard to do), you come out back on count when they get back to “normal” time. Although, there’s very little normal in any of their work. Love their stuff. Loved the reaction. Subbed.

  • @kicorse
    @kicorse Рік тому +11

    Yeah they blow my mind too. Once you get past the technical skill, you start to appreciate that the songs are beautifully constructed too. The fact that I find many of their songs catchy through all the craziness might be the most impressive thing.
    Which song next? Any of them (a bit like Band-Maid) as long as it's an original. People will probably recommend songs at the crazy end, which is fine. A personal favourites is Indelible Time, which is mid-level complexity. They do have some "normal" songs like Brilliant City and White For as well.

    Sokoninaru are great. Very math/progressive but somehow it has enough coherence to be enjoyable. I do love everything they do :)
    Ever since they got their permanent drummer they started doing three-piece harmonies on top of everything else...
    I'd heartily recommend "VortEX" live, because, well, it's live. Personally I do love "lament moment" but there's no live for that unfortunately (at least not in a sound quality that's decent).
    Don't know how familiar you are with japanese bands as a whole, but they recently did a cover of X-Japan's Kurenai (紅) and it's awesome. They used to do a cover a week, but recently it's slowed down to once a month, but in turn the production quality increased a lot.
    All their covers are pretty nice as well, they manage to imprint their rather unique sound into the sources without straying too far.
    Other than that i saw a recommensation to Asterism, and I agree, another *fantastic* three-piece. Since you enjoyed the bass in this one I'd go with "Church" or the live version of "Blaze".

      @@delbomb3131 I don't know that they *always' do 4/4, they actually might. But rhytmically it oftentimes doesn't feel like it.
      Maybe "math" is indeed wrong, but I do not know what to call their style otherwise. It is quite distinctive.

    • @delbomb3131
      @delbomb3131 Рік тому

      @@guybrushthreepwood1519 progressive is fine. But there's sheet music for most of their songs. There's like 1 song for 1 bar that they deviate. Don't get me wrong, it's about as complicated as you're gonna get within the confines of 4/4. It's like calling polyphia math, they don't utilize math within their work.

    For Sokoninaru you do say the last u, but it's not a "you" sound, not sure if that is easily feasible for English natives though because I am not sure if you have that sound in English (like we do in Dutch).
    But yes a lot of times the last u gets basically dropped or pronounced very lightly. But no worries, there is no way you could have known and most people watching this don't know how to properly pronounce the majority of Japanese words anyway. It's just that I have heard the band pronounce the name before. Google's translating service (trying not to get my comment removed) works pretty well for pronounciation of band names is you set it to Japanese before listening. It's actually pretty close to what the bandmembers say for bands like Sokoninaru, Gacharic Spin and Hanabie.
    And as far as the tapping of the bassist (Misaki) goes, she taps with her thumb like you said. They have done videos where they played each other instruments (not well, but fun to watch) and she tried tapping with her fingers for a short while when she played guitar and almost immediately switched back to her thumb because it is clearly how she learned to tap.

    Sokoninaru are fantastic, although not everyone is able to catch them at the first listen, when you catch them they are addictive hehehe
    I totally agree with some of the groups that have been mentioned to you and for my part I will give you another one that is closely related to this one, the group is "Ling Tosite Sigure" and it is the group that Juko and Misaki were inspired by, in fact they started as a band covering Ling Tosite Sigure's songs and Misaki, originally a guitarist, decided to switch to bass because of how impressed she was with how 345, Ling Tosite Sigure's bassist, played the bass.
    After several inactive years as a group they have reunited, TK (guitarist) has developed a prolific solo career, Pierre Nakano (drummer) I think he has a school and 345 (bassist) carried out an acoustic project and has developed a career as a painter (at least that's what I understand, but I may be wrong).
    I leave you some links in case you want to take a look ;)

    You can also check out 'Hello Sleepwalkers', a slightly more chill 5 piece version of this band (So ko ni na ru ... Yes you pronounce the u ... Does a couple of hello sleepwalker covers in fact.)
    Doesn't matter which sleepwalkers song you pick, they are all great.
    Hint when pronouncing Japanese ... Always use the shortest syllable sound possible and you won't often go wrong. Example: if you see the word 'make' in Japanese you would pronounce it 'maa kay' ... Japanese syllables are almost always the shortest possible way you can pronounce it, and almost always ends with a vowel.

    yeah.
    they're good.
    I was getting bored with Western Rock and I was despairing that there just weren't that many innovative bands like Animals as Leaders or Polyphia around. Then I came across the Japanese Rock Scene a little over a year ago. The Japanese have a slightly different take on Rock Genre: technical prowess is expected and they know they aren't allowed to bore an audience. They have a legacy of great rock acts of all flavors: X Japan, Maximum The Hormone, Ningen Isu, Luna Sea, Band-Maid, Dir En Grey, Versailles, Nemophila, Hanabie, and many more. These bands sweep through classic, prog, metal, deathcore - the entire spectrum of rock. Then there are the anime and soundtrack artists. Try Hiroyuki Sawano / Project【emU】"Attack on Titan" for mind-blowing 18 minute rock opera: you have to hear it to believe.

    Sokoninaru (the final "u" is pronounced after the "r," but it isn't super highly stressed) can be loosely translated as "There it/he/she roars." (The kanji for "cry" is the character for the sound an animal makes, and "naru" with that kanji can be to sound, to roar, to ring, etc. The phrase doesn't specify the he/she/it for whatever is making the noise, so pick one you like. The band has said in one interview that the name doesn't have any particular meaning; it just sounded cool.

    A=ah
    I= E (like sEEd)
