I love the real time training. It shows that they don’t always get it right away. Watching magic training videos are so discouraging for people who’s dogs don’t get it after the first training session!
That is my main "beef" about animal training videos. They use a dog that already knows the behavior (so of course the dog "catches on" right away) or they edit the video so that it makes it look like either (a) they are some super trainer or (b) the dog is a genius. Makes the rest of us feel stupid and awkward. That's what I like about Zak's videos. He shows real dogs that don't already know the behavior and he isn't afraid to show the dog's "learning curve" and any mistakes he may make.

“No one’s gonna call you yappy!” 😂 I love it! I pride myself on having well behaved chihuahuas in public. We are still working on some things but it’s nice when people compliment and ask what kind of dogs I have, and they look surprised when I say “chihuahua.” ❤️🐾
This is my goal! But so far he barks at noises he can’t see or people nearby. Not aggressively, he wants to play. But he gets on alert and its hard to get his attention!
@@lylx33 Oh I know how that is! Sometimes I'll bring my girl's favorite toy out and that still doesn't get her attention! It gets better over time! ❤ My girl used to bark at people if they only made eye contact with her, now I can walk her around a store and no more barking! You got this!

@@lylx33 You can totally do it! If your pup starts to get reactive to a person/dog, just make some more distance between your dog and the trigger. In the beginning, I couldn't take my girl into a store it was that bad. ( I got her right before the pandemic hit, so she didn't get proper socialization/training during her first puppy year). So I would drive to a store and we would sit in a parking lot and just people watch from inside the car. Anytime she didn't bark she got a treat. If she looked at someone and then looked back at me she got a treat. Then I made it a little more challenging and would roll a window down. Treats treats treats. When we did start to go to stores, I took her to a home and garden center- a nice big store so that if we needed distance from people (which we did) we would have plenty of space. It was stressful for me in the beginning because I didn't want to cause a scene, but eventually she got better and better. Now she loves shopping and will even sniff people. Our current training is not barking at other dogs!

Once again, I want to thank you for your training advice. My son could get our 8-month-old Shih Tzu to down at a very young age, I could not lol. I worked on it every day and now she will sit and down and dance for me. Her newest thing is staying inside the door until I say ok you can come. She is doing fantastic with this. She is still under 5lbs but she has a huge personality. I am still working on go to your room at night. All my son has to say is Lily, go to your room, and in she goes. I say go to your room and she just looks at me. She slept through the night from day one. She seems to enjoy sleeping in her crate. We only use the crate for sleep time.
I love how you guys provide tons of examples of what you do as you're talking about them. Rewarding the quick breaks, the dogs acknowledging you, how goods build up to yeses; so helpful. I'm not a first time dog owner but just adopted a dog who loves to bark and I've been struggling with what to do. There are so many videos with different techniques but I appreciate how you highlight small wins and consistency.
I loved this session and the real life training of shake a paw! I am still working on this with my girl, she's a timid rescue so not a big fan of her paws touched, I'm going to try these tips! I watched my lab barking at my step dad change from a nervous bark to a calm and happy bark.....then follow him into the kitchen calmly for her treat. She no longer gets a treat when he comes into the living room
I've been on vacation with Mom for the past couple of weeks, and I'm just getting caught up with the show. Great to see the George family again! You keep calling Veronica a small dog; but, personally, I'll be surprised if she grows into a small dog. I have a barker too! I rehomed an 8 month old lockdown puppy and she has been so difficult but at 2 5 years old we are now getting results. Still barking at dogs at close quarters though. I love watching your journey with Bree, Inertia and Veronika. 🙂
Oh my gosh same! My youngest dog missed out on socializing during the pandemic. When I did start taking her out to parks and stores she would bark at everything. We have worked so much on this. I can now take her into stores and she behaves so well, doesn’t bark at people anymore. But dogs- like you had mentioned- if they are close then she will bark. It’s upsetting sometimes but then I have to remember how far we’ve come. We will continue to improve! Best of luck to you! I just saw your comment and it was so nice to know I’m not alone!
Yes it's frustrating at times and I was avoiding all my dog friends as she would have a meltdown of frenzied barking if I even said hello! I've walked alongside dogs with space between us and kept her attention on me or the ball. If I'm too close and she does react I move away and then slowly closer again. Good luck with your pup too!
Hey you guys, I love your videos. I have been watching now for more than 5 years. I first found your videos Zak when I got my puppy and wanted to have a happy dog, I got your book and I tried but I think I failed. I have not been consistent. A little more than a year ago, my four years old Philippe died, it was sudden and completely out of the blue, a cardiac failure. Now I am trying with Elliot, he is an amazing sweet yorkie too. Even if he is the same breed, he is completely different and has been giving me new challenges. He is fearful, barks at any noise (I guess noises that only he can hear?) and sometimes, more than I would like, I loose my mind and scream. Anyway, sorry for such a long message, today I watched you guys and smile with Veronica. I remembered that Elliot has a lot of energy and maybe that is why he is just finding a way to channel it. Love love love your videos, thank you for sharing this life adventure with us.

Loving these new videos. We started puppy classes with our new puppy this weekend. I was very glad that I had used the pupford app to give us a head start but rabbit poop all over the training field made leave it a lot more challenge than at home.

I enjoy your videos and your approach to dog training. It’s helpful to see you train in real life moments because it’s relatable and feels the most educational to me. I would love if you could speak on the topic of dog anxiety because that’s what my dog is struggling with. New people and new objects in his bubble stress him out. He also has big outbursts when guests enter our house even if he knows them. Any tips?

Súper interesting episode. My dogs love to watch out the window- while the positive reinforcement works best- I’ve combined it with shutting the curtain while they bark and open it when they stop- therefore teaching them positive behavior is rewarded with the open curtains. But would you consider that punitive?
Technically, that is "punishment". It's called "negative punishment". The goal of "punishment" is to reduce a behavior's frequency, duration, power, or whatever. "Negative" means you take something away from the animal. So "negative punishment" is when you take something good away from the dog (the view from the open curtains) to reduce an unwanted behavior (punishment with barking being the unwanted behavior). So, technically, while this is punishment it is used by positive trainers along with positive reinforcement. It's kind of like grounding your teen-ager when he or she misses their curfew without calling with some reason (like I had to take my date to the hospital and that's where I am now, I've called her/his parents, I'll wait here with them if that's okay...). It's okay to use in combination with positive reinforcement, but you don't want to rely on it entirely. Most positive trainers do use negative punishment with positive reinforcement, as I said, just use it sparingly.

The trouble with barking out the window is it is a naturally reinforced behavior - a stranger approaches ( this is a negative stimulus) the dog barks, the stranger goes away (of course the stranger knows nothing, she is just going to a walk) but the dogs barking is reinforced by the removal of the negative stimulus. So really your best approach is to reward the quiet, encourage your dog to chill out, but closing the curtain is like removing that negative stimulus (when I bark Mum makes the stranger disappear!). It is a tough behavior because it is naturally rewarding, but patience and positive rewarding of quiet behavior is the way to go.
I have been training my puppy to sit down properly to get a treat. So proper that she is not pawing at me at all... So this was very helpful for shake!

Good discussion. When is barking good or bad? Guard dogs are great but after you have confirmed there is no longer a threat how do you get them to stop. I just go to what they are barking at and say thank you and it’s okay. Also now my dog barks at strong smells which is good as our stove was leaking gas.

I liked this video better than the others on this series. I think it was more focused (on dog training) and the roadtrip stuff was at the end. I'm not so interested in the roadtrip besides the opportunities it creates. I still would watch some of it since you're both very likeable but to me it feels kinda interrupting if its (too) interwoven in the videos. (I hope thats understandable i had some trouble putting it in english)

I love the organic training sessions in this video. I've never seen any other training video take place on the bench seat of an RV or next to a grainery. It's encouraging to see that training can happen anywhere, and that it's okay if immediate success doesn't happen.

Great video; I like how you work in fetch and teeth. Our problem is when driving Gracie solo and she gets near one of the local parks where we take her for off-leash play. She goes crazy barking. How to train in that situation??? Once we arrive she stops in order to be let out of the car.

May I ask you what threats are you using? Do you have any advice for any threats that we can give "a lot" to a puppy?

I think you mean "treats". One of the main treats I use for my dogs is their normal kibble; they like it, they are getting their nutrition and because my dogs are adults and I have to watch their weight, their "treats" are part of their meal allowance. This is what you call a low value treat; they like it, they will work for it, but in a high stimuation situation, it might not be rewarding enough. The next treats I use are freeze dried food. It is also given to dogs for meals, but it tends to be tastier and higher calories/kilojuoles. The next level up is the high value treats, these you give less of, but you use in a situation where there is a stimulating environment and you need something that they REALLY love! For my dogs bits of jerky (for dogs) really work, but for other dogs it might be bits of cooked chicken, sausage, or one of the many dog treats available. Try to keep the pieces small, they don't need to be large to be a reward, even if your dog is big; the smaller the pieces, the more you can give them. You really need to experiment to see what your dog likes and which foods are high value - meaning that they will do anything to get them!
I hope this has been helpful. Zak may talk more about treats in a later video, although I'm sure I have seen an earlier video where he does talk about them.

We have a "little brown dog" that is the most "talkative" dog we've ever had. He's just over 8 pounds, so his bark is pretty high pitched and it's not very pleasant if he does it close to your ear. We've been working with him consistently since we've had him. He's really improved (we've had him just over a year), but he still sometimes barks. When we're out and we know he's going to bark at something, we'll try to get him to "sit" and "watch me" or do a "touch" or other little trick ("spin", "sit pretty", etc.) when the thing he is going to bark at passes by. He's very good now when we know the distraction is coming--he seldom barks any more and readily sits and watches me. On the other hand, if something "sneaks up on" us, he'll still bark, BUT it's easier to get him to respond to me and look at me than it used to be--he'll stop barking more quickly and is more responsive to me. So that's an improvement. No, he's not perfect yet, and yes, we've been working with him for a while. But we're making progress and that's what counts. On the other hand, our other dog hardly ever barks. Just different personalities.

I kinda made up a way to get Misty to stop barking and taught her inside voice. Turns out it’s pretty much exactly what you guys are doing! I’m glad cause I was a bit hesitant cause I didn’t know if it’d seem like I was rewarding the barking in a way. She’s now at the point that she knows inside voice. But she still barks her head off if there is something like a kangaroo and she’s watching it from the deck. Fortunately I can call her inside and then she’ll stop barking. Or at least will stop barking louder than a “whisper”

I've a subscription to Bark Box and the Kong Club boxes. Gucci's an aggressive chewer and demolishes the toys in minutes. Also, she's a barker. It's like a baby. I know what her barking means. It's her form of communication. She barks when she has to go out, go for a walk, when it's time to eat, when she needs to go to bed, and when it's time to get out of bed.
My younger dogs learned almost all of their tricks by watching my oldest 😊 so good job Inertia!
My dogs have a strong reaction to the stay command. I yell stay (so they can hear me over their barking) and they stop barking and look at me. They also don't run out the door when I open it as they are staying. I used Zak's stay videos to teach them to stay!
Is part of the idea to do a "train the trainer" series? That'd be awesome! I found myself paying more and more attention to @Zak's techniques during training. I'm not just talking about how to train a dog, but the way you hold your hand while teaching something. Some of those very specific very granular portions that a very experienced person would forget to point out otherwise. Training somebody how to be a dog trainer is a great opportunity to get in a lot more of those details. We love some more Bree face time!
When it comes to barking at what they see out of the windows...is it better to just eliminate the trigger (close blinds) or attempt to reinforce quiet window time?
Zak we need your guidance:
We are about to get a new puppy and he is arriving by plane. 10 weeks old, not yet fully vaccinated. We have no idea if we should take him out to the bathroom before driving home, or even if thats safe. And also are not sure whether to keep him in his crate during the drive or let him snuggle if it makes him feel safer.

brushing my dog's teeth feels really satisfying. he actually used to hate it, but now he loves it for some reason. i really didn't do any conditioning or training, but now he really likes the taste of the toothpaste. he used to run away at the sight of the toothbrush and toothpaste.

My dog is getting older and I think his vision is getting worse, so he is starting to bark at things he doesn't recognize. This is very helpful!
Loving these videos. Does anyone have any advice on training please? I have a 12 week old papillon. I’ve yacht her come and sit and now lie down using gestures and verbal command. Now when I tell her to sit she automatically lies down. I don’t want to tell her no because she is lying down and should be praised. Not sure how to navigate this.
Probably not a popular method anymore hahah but we needed a solution fast due to neighbor issues.. We used a method similar to this but also kept a metal can filled with pennies. That can gets shaken vigorously when they are on a rant. Quickest method so far for me.

So interesting!! We just adopted a 4 year old Australian Shepherd. He has some anxiety, and will go into barking sessions of 20+ minutes, won't accept treats, won't listen (when normally he listens really well). How can we help lessen his anxiety and his barking? we try taking him on a walk, exercise, etc, but it doesn't seem to help.

Our last beautiful girl Tilly was a barking machine a lot of issues, started as, was separated from mum at 5 weeks as mum attacking her and a breed issue she was a German Shepherd x Collie x Spaniel.
Tilly was hugely intelligent
The Police wanted to adopt her when they observed her finding toys we hid in nature reserve day before on walk without her on the following day we would go to reserve give "go seek* command and she nailed finding them regardless if it was us or another dog walker that hid toys for us... We allowed Police to borrow for training exercises but she was my joy.
Tilly self taught to alert to a medical condition I had and even alerted to a early breast lump.. She kept pawing at one side, there was nothing to feel but went to Dr explained what was happening did a scan and early lump detected and removed... The pawing stopped... I owe her my life.
Tillys recall amazing 1 shout from distance to come she rocketed to our heel.
in fact all her commands were 1 word direction and automatic response.. Sit, Lay, Stay, Paw, Leave, Down, Off she knew them all with very little training any training was with reward of ear rub, sml treat it high value her Toy she had from pup to death.
However the barking was off the scale if the door went frantic barking second door closed silence,
Visitors barked at if they interacted or gave her any attention she lost it would not stop they left switch turned off mooched to her bed.
Loud noise like fireworks were so distressing to observe.
We tried everything dog trainers, behavioural dog psychology, boarding with Police Dog Handler and obviously Vet advice.
I have to say nothing worked so we had to manage environment/situations ie if we knew trigger event like Fireworks we used sedation, hug shirt,
T Touch, calmness etc
Tillys barking was hugely challenging but on balance the positive aspects far out wayed barking over 14 years we had her. Lordy were there times I thought I can not do this anymore of course but the love and joy she gave was worth it sometimes you have to accept and compromise all dogs as individual as us.
I know the key to out decision to keep her was she was a fantastic dog that we choose to bring into our lives and was totally our responsibility to manage situation had we not been prepared to we should never have had dog.
Tilly was dog 9 and now at Rainbow Bridge I vowed no more but heck a new Goofball Hugemungus Black Standard Poodle required urgent re home aged 7 so now we have
Mister Piper in our lives the biggest lazy gentle giant I have ever had in 6 months we have his weight down by 5kg, he is in a routine, awesome off lead recall and again with no training alerting to my health issue long before I am aware by nose bobbing me... I love him while still missing my mad barking machine that was Tilly.
Recently got a puppy (she’s 3 months old) . She’s very shy and hides from people/dogs. She also barks at most dogs and some people. Any tips on how to build up her confidence? Our last dog was fearful of some sounds, but never had any issues with people or dogs, and almost never barked. So we’re new to this situation :’)
You'll probably address this in the video later ... I'm only 4 minutes in, but I'm impetuous ... but can you reward Inertia for being calm, quiet, maybe even laying quietly, every time Veronica barks, and ignoring Veronica until she lies down way below the window where she can't see out?

Thank you for the supper example for unlearning how to bark, but my aussi barks constantly when I go to the walk by car, and when I come back he doesn't bark anymore, I can't unlearn it 🙈
Hello Zak, Just reaching out for some advice. my puppy is from a farm and I live in a city. he is TERRIFIED of cars to the point he won't walk on a leash or use the potty outside if cars are passing (and they always are passing) I'm scared it's going to make potty training and leash training impossible. we've tried giving him treats, and he is so frightened of them that he won't even take them. I would love to get your feedback and get some advice on what I can do to help my pup out.
I love the dog training but how does that work with a relationship with a pet? The way I see it playing with them turns into work (training) so how do they have fun with it?
Been trying to teach shake for over a year, lol!!! Our pup thinks it means "leave it" when we have a treat trapped in our hand... I'm on Bree's wavelength--I'll just capture it one day and then we'll be able to teach it.
We taught our 13 weeks old pup to give paw and "press button" (where you show the palm of your hand to him and he "presses" it with his nose) and that's all he wants to do now 😁😁 Good thing is now instead of nibbling on us when we sit down with him for attention he tries to give a paw 😁
My puppy barks to get attention. Like barking at my feet as I relax. I know he wants my attention but how do I stop the constant barking in this case?
@6:37 So, am I wrong in this impression? Have thought this a few times before this point, but: is this not a example of rewarding the lass for barking, when translated to canine?
My results in using the strategy would seem to not support that hypothesis. we are actually rewarding for small bits of quiet. This is really difficult for people to grasp it seems. I can totally understand why though!
