- Join Dr Matthew Roby ( / matthewhroby ) for an extra special episode of Saga Stories about the famous Grettis saga sterka, known in English as "The Saga of Grettir the Strong." Grettir is an extremely complicated hero: sometimes kind and honourable, sometimes lazy and rude, sometimes wicked and downright psychopathic. When he's feeling benevolent, he fights trolls and berserkers to defend the weak, but he's also the guy who murders somebody over a packed lunch. In this episode, we follow in the footsteps of this larger-than-life hero to tell some of the most fascinating tales from his saga.
First, we take you to the farmstead of Bjarg near the modern-day village of Laugarbakki, where Grettir was born and grew up (65°15'59.4"N 20°48'35.4"W). Here we tell the story of Grettir's troublesome childhood, in which he expresses his strength and prideful nature by torturing his father Ásmundr's farm animals, not to mention Ásmundr himself.
Second, we take you to the verdant valley of Forsæludalur, the location of the medieval farmstead of Þórhallstaðir (65°18'36.0"N 20°07'58.2"W). This is the setting of the most famous haunting in all of saga literature: the relentless attacks of the revenant Glámr. We tell you the story of how Glámr became an undead zombie, how he is ultimately vanquished by the mighty Grettir, and how this victory haunts Grettir for the rest of his life...
Finally, we take you to the breathtaking island of Drangey, whose sheer cliffs rise 180m out of the icy waters of Skagafjörður (65°56'39.9"N 19°41'23.3"W). Nowadays, the island is famous for its thriving puffin colony, but it's also where Grettir spends his last three years as an outlaw. We tell the story of how he ended up on the island, what he did while he lived there, and how he was ultimately brought down by his powerful enemies and even more powerful witchcraft.

There's another saga still to be told - the saga of this man with supernatural capabilities to circle around his companions in the steepest and foulest terrain, in mist and rain and sleet - opening our eyes to the otherwordly beauty of Iceland without letting himself seen by us - the saga of Artr the mystery cameraman …
you put it straight.. 😁
I went to Grettislaug when staying at an artist’s residency in Iceland, a truly awe-inspiring night. Great to hear the saga recounted in much more detail!
Showing us the amazing landscape while telling the stories really make me understand the 'meaning' much better. The land and the stories are inextricably linked. I like how the pre-christian culture comes through and always weaves its way in.
Breathtaking cinematography! Thanks!
Grettir the Strong was one of the first sagas I read. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go to the island of Drangey, so this visit is much appreciated! Thank you so much! Hoping 2022 will be a better year for everyone.
Matthew is an unbelievable storyteller. I thoroughly enjoy these videos. Thank you!
The saga stories are always brilliantly told by Dr Roby but the scenery for this one was even more stunning than usual. Drangey Island looks amazing. 🙂
Again a wonderful saga. This one I know but it is wonderful that you explain the story. When I read a saga for the first time I thought it was al so violent, there is quite a lot of killing. But I understand that defending your honour and of the family was very important.
Also thanks for the beautiful video and that you make the effort to show where it all happened.
I am curious to the next one.
I have watched/listened to all of these at least twice. They are awesome, thank you Dr. Roby.
Thank you. That was really cool.
Interesting.
That was absolutely brilliant. Love these. Thank you Dr Matthew Roby and team.
Another wonderful saga and telling of it! Thank you Dr Roby, from Framklinville, New York, USA
Another great saga! Thank you, Sir, and may you have a wonderful 2022!
wonderful story. Thank you. Merry Christmas !
Matthew, I like your saga stories!!! Listening to them is so much better than self-reading. The way you "present" them in the landscape where they possibly took place hundreds of years ago, is wonderful! And you are telling them so that I can understand all you say (as a not native English speaker). I'm looking forward to the next one and I hope, you have a lot more to tell :-)
Thank you again for the beautiful story telling. I can't tell you how much I love hearing stories on suite. Very much appreciated indeed.
Really well made film. Narration, photography, editing are all top notch. And the scenery! So good I regret not stopping in Iceland and missing that connecting flight.
Thank you Dr Robie and Master Art. We travel with you back into the past.
Great video and text, thank you! Swimming from Drangey to Grettislaug is a dream for me...
Thanx for sharing
ABSOLUTELY excellent. Thank you.
That was wonderful! I'm reading the saga at the moment and this video has helped me mentally place the action. Fantastic! Happy New Year to you.
Wonderful saga, video/scenery. You’ve outdone yourselves again. Wishing you all an amazing New Year. 🇮🇸💙🎉
Thank you! You too!
Thank you! Much appreciated and wonderful scenery!
Wonderfully recounted saga. Thank you.
Good you climbed to the top of the island, as I am way too fearful of heights.
THought i had added a note of appreciation for your presentations of Saga Stories. Nrvermind, thanks again for your efforts with this fascinating material. Really enjoy them.
Reminded me of flying into Stavanger airport on New Year’s Eve in 2004: it was like entering a war zone!
More sagas plees 😊 gretings scandinavia 🇫🇮
Awesome!
The Northman (the most realistic Viking film ever produced up to this point in time) contains a fine scene in which the protagonist, Amaleth, battles and defeats a Draugr by decap!tating the creature and placing the head between it's legs, on it's ass. Great scene. 👍
Where’d u get your sweater? I love it
I wonder if glamr's trol/dokkalfar "genetic awekening" like-metamorphosis (remind the slavic obour) are similiar to cocoon/chrysalis of insects, Palco fish dried-off body like hibernation in the mudd, the eagle's regrowth of his feathers, beak, and claws after he tear and break them for 150 days...
During the long dark winters people trip out even today in modern times. It's seasonal depression and it's well documented.
Who was filming this?
I was terrified you were going to fall down the cliff on that island!
That must be one of the best farms in Iceland.
Thanks Matthew for the recounting and Art for the amazing camera and drone work. One suggestion: in the editing, could you put up a caption with the names spelled out?
I enjoy the sagas, but the characters are often unlikeable!
Please do Volsung saga.
Thanks 😊, I like the Icelandic Sagas, but you speak to fast for me at least. I would like to hear the Sagas in the German language . Kind regards 🌸🌿🌸🤗
I believe you can click the three dots in top right corner and slow down the video play back speed.
Is it true that Grettir has another "small" curse between his legs? Is that really a part of his saga or account? Thanks Professor!
Was his father or grandfather one of the Viking's then, that came from Norway and settled in Iceland?
Does Art do the photography for the Saga Stories?
Yes!
Surah Mulk indexed with number 67, number of verses 30
1 Exalted is He, in Whose hand is the power, and He has power over all things.
2 He it is Who created death and life, that He might try which of you is best in conduct. He is the Mighty, the Forgiving.
3 He it is Who created the seven heavens in pairs. You can not see any contrast in the creation of the Merciful, so direct your gaze to see if you see any gaps?
4 Then, from time to time, direct your gaze, and your gaze will return to you humbled and helpless.
5 We have adorned the nearest heaven with candles, and made them throwers against the devils, for whom We have prepared a painful punishment.
6 Hell is a punishment for those who disbelieve in their Lord; how miserable he is!
7 When they are thrown into it, they will hear its noise, and it will boil.
8 "Out of rage, he is almost torn to pieces. Every time a crowd is thrown at him, the guard asks him:" Did not a prophet (warner) come to you?
9 They say: "Yes, a messenger came to us, but we rejected him and said: 'Allah has not revealed anything, and you are nothing but a great loss.'
10 They say: If we had heard and understood, we would not have been among the dwellers of the Fire.
11 Thus they confess their sins; the dwellers of the Fire are far from mercy.
12 Those who fear their Lord without seeing it, for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
13 But hide yourselves, or speak your word openly; indeed He knows what you conceal in your hearts.
14 He who created, when he knows that he penetrates the depths of secrets, does he not know the details?
15 He has made the earth suitable for you, so walk through its parts and enjoy His bounties, for to Him belongs the future.
16 Are you assured of Him Who is in the heavens that the earth will not shake when it shakes?
17 Were you sure of what is in the heavens that He would not send upon you a tempest of stones? Well, you will understand what My punishment is!
18 Even those before them did not believe, but what was My punishment?
19 Have they not seen the birds above him with open arms, and when the wings are folded, no one holds them in the air except the Almighty. He is the One who sees and knows everything.
20 Who is your army that can help you but the Merciful? It is true that the disbelievers are found in a great deception.
21 Who is he that feareth you, if he shall forbid you? No, but they persist in arrogance and disgust.
22 Is he who walks with his face to the ground more guided, or he who walks upright on the straight path?
23 Say: It is He Who created you and endowed you with hearing, sight and mind, but you give thanks a little.
24 Say: It is He Who created you and multiplied you in the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.
25 And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled, if ye are truthful?
26 Say: "Only Allah knows, and I am only a warner to you."
27 "When they see it (Hell) approaching, those who disbelieve will have their faces disfigured and they will be told, 'This is what you asked for.'
28 Say, "Tell me, if Allah takes my soul and those with me, or has mercy on us, who will protect the disbelievers from the painful punishment?"
29 Say: He is the Beneficent, We have relied on Him, and on Him do we rely, and you will know who is the loser.
30 Say: Tell me, if your water is lost in the depths, who will bring you to the surface of the earth?.
Imagine this saga drawn by Baki manga creator🙏👌😤😎🤩
icelandic sagas the best
A rational reason of why never look at a zombi's eyes.
After the Geese, the goslings and the back scratches Ousmunder (spelling?) and his wife perhaps should've realized that some children are best orphaned out!
Some of these sagas' are quite long but for some reason you just have to keep listening because they make you want to know how it all ends, no matter what the outcome. 😲 😦 😧 😯 🙄 😲
❤️🇨🇦❤️
I have loved every single episode of this series. Dr Roby is such an amazing explainer and he has a lovely way of telling these sagas! Will there be more? 😊🥹🙏
Roby is in Canada right now, doing some scholars stuff, but we are trying to find an opportunity to keep on going. It might take some time. Thank you though, we really love Dr Roby's shows also at The Reykjavík Grapevine.
