How about the excitement a buddy and his friend caused at a Colorado Dept. of Wildlife checkpoint. They borrowed a bull moose head mount from a restaurant owned by a friend, threw some bunched up hay in the back of their truck and then tarped it with just the head showing. There was no moose season back in the early '80's so when the rookie wildlife officer saw the head he about lost it. Started to read the riot act when a supervisor came over, lifted the tarp, and exposed the charade. A good laugh was had by all, the rookie learned that practical jokers are all about, and sent my buddies down the road. Most law enforcement these days don't have any sense of humor. And I'm not at liberty to say if there was any alcohol involved, but 40 years ago things were less government controlled like they are now a-days and cops and other LEO's weren't trained to be heartless storm troopers like today.
in PA you're required to tell the officer if you have a "concealed firearm" if they ask. sadly they are 1 of a couple states that made that shit a law. and it being in a center console could be classified as "concealed".
In NY I think we have to tell them. Also a judge can take our concealed carry permit from us for any reason so even if I didn’t have to declare it and they for some reason searched the car and found it that can be used by a judge to take away your permit

I have not hunted for many years and live outside the USA. Can you explain why the officers wouldn't search under the tarp? Reasonable suspicion was enough for the detainment but was not enough for an arrest or a search warrant?
The reasonable suspicion allowed them to briefly detain and they can do a plain view search during that detainment but they needed probable cause to actually search (including lifting the tarp) and they didn’t have PC. That’s the way I understand it.

Many of the videos I have watched suggests that cops when reaching an impasse become frustrated and emotions take over. So often I see cops force through an impasse, breaching rights like "breaking eggs to make an omelet". "The end justifies the means" with lies and double-downs to legitimize the result, and of course, rubber-stamped by the courts in protectionism. The better trained, and officers who religiously 'practice' emotional control, law and policy, recognize an impasse for what it is, and instead, will resort to "outside the box", "lateral" or "critical thinking", reevaluating and researching how to move forward. It would have been interesting to see which avenue these officers would have taken, but it seemed they were the better of the two, you just never know until after the fact. So when you let the proverbial 'cat out of the bag', allowing them to search, it very much seems you intended the encounter to be a test up and until that point, and a learning experience going forward. It is very curious of what they could, would, or should have done next, short of releasing you from detainment, and without breaching rights or abusing some statute as a work-around.
