Speaking as a +30-year long SU fan...Southern has shown their underbelly this season and Jackson State gutted them TWICE!

SU was an embarrassment, i have always loved what they have brought to the table, but this year!?! Hell the last few years they have been trashy... they need a serious revamp, Dolls included...the entire program has lost their razzle and dazzle

1 more thing..I’d never thought I’d ever see S Phi D making this many mistakes and skating like they do. Their tubas, percussion, & mellos have their off & on years but you could always count on the trumpets, baritones & bones to hold it down. They been super mid this season. I’ve always wanted to see a S Phi D & Dizzacks battle..Norfolk would eat these dudes up now

@@ShutUpAndBumpThat wasss just ONE game tho. The problems were fixed by the next game. Every band has had an off game or an off song this year, I think Southern has had the most though and Jackson has had the least which is why they’re on top this year.

Nah. 1 person doesn’t make a program. They didn’t fall off when Greggs, Knighten, Jackson or Haymer left. I think they’re too big. SU never needed a big band with their instrumentation & arrangements..170-195 was perfect for them. They chasing quantity over quality now.

SMH Everyone seems surprised as if this JSU is some sudden, overnight product of osmosis. About 4 seasons ago I commented how JSU with Dr. Little at the helm had evolved into something serious. From there they’ve only gotten better each season and will continue evolving for the better (during his tenure). Having said that, SU is in an unfortunate death spiral. A total regime overhaul is in order. Either way for SU it will get worse before things start to get better.

These 2000 babies tripping mane..where the pride at? I marched for Bama State back in the day & one time we stayed in practice till 1am getting ready for them. That intimidation isn’t there anymore. No matter if the director was Greggs, Jackson, Knighten, or Haymer you knew they were coming to put on a show. Seems like they just happy to wear that S now without putting the work in.
There are probably new rules in place for all these bands regarding rehearsal time and academics. Back in the day at my school being in band was like working a full time night shift job after classes. Rehearsals, sectionals and individual lessons too!
@@bebevee4253 true..but it has to be on you as a HBCU musician to put the work in. I used to walk to the music building & practice alone in a rehearsal room whenever I was bored or wanted to put extra work in. I’d see others doing it too & none of us were even music majors. You shouldn’t need anyone to hold your hand as a member of a SWAC marching band.

Your analysis is spot on! SU is missing discipline and musicianship. They sound and act very similar to the NOLA all city band. And the mix of songs in the beginning reminds me of the dance routine portion of their field show.

Am I trippin'?? I think SU needs to focus on upper brass so they can regain their identity because after Haymer left, SU became more baritone heavy and lost a lot of their signature sound.. I ask because I think in order to have an elite band you need either an elite tuba section to lean on and/or elite upper brass. SU has always had huge talented mello and trumpet sections to carry them just as dawg team has done for Jackson. Am I trippin'??

I crabbed in 05 at Lane College. Tuba section M.O.B fall 05 ( Ministries of Basses) I was a part of the rebrand of Lane but we went through all the old heads that were in the band when Lane was a contender program in the SIAC. But my mindset was taught to me in high school by TSU and JSU alumni that came to help the program.

@@kipsmith476 look at the program now and look at the last year and also 3-5 years ago. They are undisciplined especially if they are not taking the time to perfect their craft. How you have a song for 3 maybe 4 weeks and still make the same mistakes. That is a lack of discipline. Can you agree that it takes a certain level of discipline to practice with your section without being told? Also look at how the conduct themselves. Instrument players should not leave their section to try and walk up on another band. Stay in your ranks and splash.

You are absolutely correct!!!! The SBOTS won this battle. I thought since Southern wanted this second chance, they were going to bring it. I got chills listening to that Wishing on a Star arrangement. JSU has been killing all year and has not let up yet. Dr. Little and his assistant band directors are freaking geniuses. Our football team has struggled at times, however, Dr. Little and the SBOTS has carried us in those low moments. We may not be going to the SWAC championship game but we literally have the best band in all of HBCU's right now. We have 1 more band to demolish this year and the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite better know what they are about to step into. This is the last game of the year for JSU and Dr. Little is going to go crazy on them.💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍P.S. I am so proud of Coach T.C and the JSU Tigers this year. Through all of our struggles we are still having a winning season.
