The most difficult part for me is speaking. Now I practice "shadowing technique", trying to repeat aloud after Bob the Canadian on his second channel "Really Short English Lessons". My wife jokes, that I speak so fast she never heard me speak native language. And my son says it looks funny, like I argue with Bob. But ... it works!

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian

That is a great thing to do. Shadowing can really help you to not only learn new words and phrases, but it makes you physically move your mouth to form the words properly. Good work!

Hello Bob. I read English wiki and simple English wiki. I use cambridge vocabulary for determining some words that I don't know. I listen to your video with subtitles on and then off. I downloaded a list of the 5000 most use English words in daily conversation .that is it yet. I do my best to reach some good result. I started only two and half

Hello again. To improve my listening and speaking skills, I have established a daily routine and it works very well:
Every morning I take my car to go to work and I listen to English podcasts. And then, on my way back from work I think about what I've heard in the morning and I try to speak about it to myself. Sometimes the topic of the podcast doesn't inspire me, so I talk about what I'm going to do later in the evening, or what my day has been like.
In the beginning I felt a bit weird, but I'm getting used to talking to myself. It's really really helpful to overcome the shyness of speaking.
    Greetings from France

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  4 роки тому +9

The fact that you are talking to yourself in the past, and in the future is a very good idea. Often new English speakers get stuck speaking in the present tense, but it is more exciting to talk about the things you have done and the things you will do! 📙📺🎧

Hey Bob and the whole community there!!!
Currently I'm reading the book "The woman in the window" from A.J. Finn. It's slightly too advanced for my upper-intermidiate level. There are many words I don't know. But as the story is very thrilling and gripping I keep reading anyway. I only look up words when I cannot understand the meaning of a sentence. Otherwise I try to guess the meaning in context. This way I don't have to interrupt my reading too often and I don't lose interest in the book.
I definitely recommand this book for readers from intermediate to advanced level.
    Greetings from France

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  4 роки тому +5

Your strategy is very sound. At a certain point you just have to keep reading instead of stopping to look up every word. It is a balance between stopping often enough to look up words for understanding, and not losing interest. You seem to have found this balance! Good job! 📺🎧📙

Hello to everybody! Thank you, Bob, for these really great lessons. I appreciate this warm and welcoming atmosphere of your lessons! I teach English in Russia and I get tons of useful tips from your videos. We can find grammar in school books, but we'd never find this real vivid speaking language there! I'm recommending your lessons to some of my students this week as a way to improve listening. Hope, they'll get hooked on the videos instead of all that trash.☺ Do what you do and love it as you do now! 🇨🇵 I've got a question: Have you thought of making some kind of the same videos for French-learning students? I'm learning French and would be eager to practice it here. Thanks for reading! 🙂

I am a native English speaker, but I'm not a native French speaking, it is a learned language for me and I have an accent. It's better in my opinion to learn a language from a native speaker if you can! Thanks for the suggestion though! I appreciate your confidence in me! 📙📺🎧

    Hi Bob!
I spend an hour studying English everyday. I study physics and my mother tongue is German.
    I have my own plan:
    Mon: Reading / Pronunciation
    Tue: Listening / Vocabulary
    Wed: Reading / Pronunciation
    Thu: Listening / Vocabulary
    Fri: Reading / Pronunciation
    Sat: Listening / Vocabulary
    Sun: Listening / Vocabulary
Reading / Pronunciation: I read the CBC news out loud and look up every word that I don’t know and if I don’t know the pronunciation of a word, I look it up on Youglish (or other homepages). The main goal is to practice my pronunciation and learn new vocabularies.
Listening / Vocabulary: For listening I watch series or movies. At the time I watch the series Breaking Bad. Other series I’ve watched or I’m going to watch are Mr. Robot and Community. First I watch an episode with subtitles and write down every phrase or word that I don’t know. After that I learn these phrases and words. Then I watch the episode again without subtitles and try to understand everything.
As you see I don’t do much speaking and writing at the moment. My main goal at the moment is to be able to understand English (I want to be able to watch movies and read newspapers or books without having much troubles with the vocabulary). After I’ve reached this goal, I want to find native speakers on the internet for practicing writing and speaking and after I’m done with studying Physics (2022) I want to move to Canada.

CBC news is great. The stories are well written and if you watch the news on TV the reporters are well spoken. I started watching Mr. Robot, but I just couldn't get into it. I hope you have better luck! 📙📺🎧 I wish you all the best with your studies and I hope you can find a way to move to Canada some day!

    Hi teacher
First of all thanks for your kind efforts to help learning more ❤️ and your ❤️ follow up plans of listeners
I follow my old own plan to improve my skills of English as I estimate my level an intermediate.
Reading: the current book I read a book of Raymond Murphy (second edition) called "English Grammar in Use" to check and increase a wide range of grammar.
Listening: I practice listening to you and to many others ❤️ like Ganesh, Gabby Wallace etc.. (actually I feel that I can understand more than 90% of yours and little less in news of TV channels.
Writing: I write many comments, answers of exercises, and many messages to my relatives who ask me to serve their correspondence.
Speaking: every day I speak with my nephew who lives in USA.

Hi Bob! I really appreciate you for your teaching! Neither other English-teaching channel made me took everyday actions to learn English like this does.
Now let’s talk about studying plan. A lot of activities described in plan I have already done for some period (such as reading, listening and watching TV series), so I use it to make my studying more structured.
    1. Reading.
I tried to read a lot and here is my daily reading routine:
    - In the morning I’m reading the article of the day on Wikipedia
    - During a break on my job I’m reading some book. I’m already read “Charlotte's Web” by E. B. White (beginner level), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl (beginner level), “The Headless Horseman” by Mayne Reid (something between intermediate and advanced level) and the last one is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill (intermediate level).
    - Before putting my son to bed I read for him few pages from “Winnie-the-Pooh” by A. A. Milne (beginner level).
    - Then, before going to bed myself, I continue to read my current book.
    - And during the day, I read some technical instructions on my job or look for something on Wikipedia (description of the movie, someone biography, etc.)
    2. Writing.
The biggest move in this direction was finding a pen pal. Here is a recommendation for the other students - you can try to find someone to talk with on reddit there are a lot of Subreddits where people seeking for long-term conversation.
By the way, if someone wants to start pan paling with me, feel free to text me via reddit. Here is my nickname: wonder_raccoon.
    3. Listening.
It is the easiest one. I’m listening podcasts from ESLpod.com, different streams (especially Bob’s one) and audio versions of books which I’m reading at the moment on my way to work or home, and sometimes during the work day.
In the evening I watch 1 episode of some TV show. The last once was “Fringe”.
    4. Speaking.
It’s totally opposite to listening. I mean the toughest once. All my speaking is a bit reading and describing my everyday life out loud.
I don't talk to people yet. Maybe it’s because of lack of time, or maybe because I’m shy of my accent and poor vocabulary, and low speed of speech.
I’m planning to gain some confidence and start to visit local english-speaking club.
    5. Vocabulary.
I found that all these games and apps doesn’t work for me, so I use some old school notebook.

    Hello from Korea.
I've just finished the book "Nine perfect strangers" by Liane Moriarty.
It took almost six weeks for me to read it all. When I read any book written in English, I just don't read it through like native English speakers reading novels.
Even though when I understand what each sentence means, I try to kind of memorize the way the sentence is written when I find it quite different from the way I use in Korean. As the way of thinking, and the way of expressing is quite different, I think it is quite necessary to get accustomed to the way the native English speakers speaks their own language.
So, I kind of analyze the structure of any sentence which is quite strange to me. I try to read the sentence over and over again till I speak the whole expression quite naturally without looking at it.
I also write all the expressions which are quite difficult on my notebook so that I could read them all over again when I forget them in the future.
Your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks.

Hello Bob! I'm Ramon from China. There are some things that I do everyday to improve my English. According to when I do It , I'll divide them into 3 sections and here we are. What i do firstly in morning is that I revise all the vocabularies coming from reading and listening that I learned yesterday, and after that I read a long article released in BBC news at the meantime I write down all the unknown words in my laptop in order that I can revise them in the second day, and then i copy the article i have read and paste it into my computer as a document and then I read loudly a piece of previous documents so that I can rainforce what I have learned and practice my oral muscle. In afternoon I revise more words as what I do in morning, and then I do some English comprehension about one and half an hour, and I aslo read a short article from BBC news. In evening I watch two or three your videos posted on Tuesday and i repeat what I have heard and after that I write my views about the long article that I read in morning. My regular study task always ends up with reading a little article aloud and during that time I try to pronounce as clearly as I can. But these things I do everyday is temporary because actually I'm taking IELTS course, but I can't go out to take the course due to the nwe coronavirus. By the way I really really love Post Malone, he is so amazing and I also love Imagine Dragons.

Hi Bob! How are you? Unfortunately I have not participated in your lives due to my work, but I'm always following you...
Lately, I have read and wrote some papers in English, it's being my first experience to write something like that in English, and I hope they be accepted. I have exercising my writing too leaving comments in the best English Learning UA-cam channel!!
In my daily routine, I have practice my reading, and listening though Biblegateway website. Over there, there are a lot of languages versions of the bible, and in particular English NVI with dramatized audio. It's awesome!! My speaking, maybe you think I'm crazy, but to try practice, I talk by my self, and sometimes I imagine myself talking to you!!! It's very funny!!! But... I have worked!
Big hug my friend, and keep doing your brilliant work. God bless you!!

Religious texts are a great way to refresh yourself spiritually and learn a language at the same time. Because you are already familiar with the Bible in your native language it becomes a natural conduit to learning new vocabulary. 📙📺🎧 Good to see you here! I'm sorry that work is taking up so much of your time, but hey, if you like your work that isn't such a big deal!

I've read lots of books in English. Now rereading Kate Morton's 'The Lake House'. This Australian writer belongs to the Victorian movement. Always some mystery in her novels. Listening: English Speeches for graduates at a university, Talks at Google, TV shows, movies only in English with English subtitles. Speaking: very little, but I found out recently I'm talking to myself in English and that I'm understanding more than before.

    1) I read
    the great gatsby
    meiko's treasure
    The secret garden
    Stars my destination alfred bester
    The mist Stephen king
    2) I really didn't this, well, i'm right now in a English course and I write all saturdays and in Facebook, UA-cam and all that, even in word to make homeworks so.
    3) Listening.
This is my strongest part, i usually hear CCR, SOAD, Eminem, ABBA, Bob Marley since many years so I ever hear english and podcast and Bob's channel, even more english channels to learn more vocabulary, i ever hear english every day, at least 1 to 3 hours at day, AND your videos helps a lot.
    4) this is the most dificcult part cause I only can talk with prople in the course and with my self, i usually speak to my dog on English and to my self when i'm at home making stuff and all that you know
    5) Reading and Speaking, specially Reading and watching videos is for me the Best way to learn NEW vocabulary, ever, dude i looked for job, sports, felling, techincal, good, AND a lot more kind of vocabulary, even when I read Isaac Isimov Books I learn NEW words, i could say that I learn NEW words each day.
Personally what make a strong difference in my learmign was READING, Watching videos bout NEW vocabulary and some structure, watching móvies, Listening songs of course But Reading is in first place dude.
I dont even knew that "restless" was a way to express.
AND my weaker part is Speaking cause I need to practice fluency in a normal convesation you know.

Hello Bob! Thank you for your great work to teach us English!
I will try to respond to you.
    1. Reading - Firstly I've been reading a lot of social network posts, especially Twitter (Elon Mask and other famous people), Secondly, I found Cambridge Dictionary On-Line and there read articles.
    2. Listening - While I drive to my work and after work back home, I listen to the American Gods Audio Book in English, however sometimes I can't understand all.
    3. Speaking - I can't afford a native speaker teacher, so I hire a tutor from Armenia to conversation practice and he teach me English and we almost every time speak in English.
    4. Dictionary - I use an application on my phone to learn new words, I do it daily and repeat almost thirty words every day. Also, I write words down and describe them in English in my notebook.
During I have lunch I watch videos on UA-cam, mostly one channel, it called Learn English with Bob the Canadian)) also some interesting channels with reviews of new gadgets (Unbox Therapy, I think the author also from Canada), as I like computer technologies.
Also, I watch a tv channel in the evening after dinner, it called the English Club TV, every day there shows movies in English with subtitles. I'm going to rewatch The Friend in English with subtitles.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to refresh and improve my knowledge of English. I began to watch daily video lessons of three teachers on You Tube. Two of them speak British English and one speaks American. Bob, no need to say that you're one of these teachers. Watching their videos helps me to improve my oral comprehension skills and to enrich my vocabulary. To tell the truth, I don't even try to remember all the words I just enjoy the process of learning smth new. But every day I make up sentences with new words in written form and write comments. To remember the words easier I imagine the situation in which I can use them. When l have some free time I can read, listen or watch any kind of news, TV shows, films and music. I often watch The Ellen Show. But last week I watched a number of videos about Frida Kahlo. I also love videos about animals and nature. Music is my favourite kind of arts. So I can listen to any music and any singer. Some time ago I listened a lot to Eminem and Celine Dion. I found one channel where I can follow the words of the song on the video while listening to it. There's no one to talk to in English by my side, so I speak out loud to myself and read extracts from books and articles aloud. I began to read the book "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It's easy to read as this book is for children. But it turned out to be a kind and moving story, so I gonna read it till the end. I even found the audio version on You Tube. Thus, first I read the book and look for the unknown words in the dictionary, and then read and listen to the text on the video. It helps to improve pronunciation and spelling skills. Sometimes when I'm in mood I work on my pronunciation with the help of tongue twisters. From my own experience I can say that learning rhymes, poems, dialogues and texts by heart can be very helpful too. If I'm not sure about any grammar points I consult Grammar books or look for the rules in the net.

Sir, i am very much interested to write my comments because i get reply from the great teacher i have ever seen in my life. I am from India. Works in Government service and we write and send communications in English, the sweet language, but we dont speak it fluently. But sometimes our officers speak very fluently in meetings, and I get stuck if i speak, so I speak in mothertongue. I am watching you for the last few months. I understand everything you say except few. So i always watch your videos happily. Now i started speaking inmy office with people who are interested, but i cant say everything as i wish. Listening is the main thing which i do. I listen to videos done in english by different people, in various topics, i write down all the usages which are new to me. I have note book in which i note down all the new words from your class. When i listen to you i feel that its very easy to learn because we are familiar to your accent. There is a lot more to write, sir.

Firstly, reading. I started to read the Hitchhiking guide to the Galaxy, but then I realized that it's not interesting for me and I believe that book is pretty advanced. So I came back to my night book, Goosebumps.
Next, writing. I'm preparing for taking an IELTS so I am re-writing letters and essays. Also I have a chat with my wife only on English.
Listening. It's the easiest part 😉. Podcasts (Voice of America, All Ears English and others). It also includes UA-cam videos, videogames, movies, TV shows. Now I am watching Pokemons. I assume that English in Pokemons is difficult enough to understand 100% of it.
Speaking. Shadowing and TPRS method. I found out a cool guy AJ Hoge and his lessons Powerful English. It really helped me with speaking.
