      The series as a whole was one of that comedy's main inspirations, another being a late night movie showing of ZERO HOUR! Many of the characters in AIRPLANE are named after those in the aforementioned 1957 adventure.

      @@jessecoffey4737 After seeing AIRPLANE!, I saw plenty of comparisons of that film, in Zero Hour!, in which I really plan to see very soon. Sometimes, I really admire watching spoof movies first, since when I watch the original film of where it usually starts, I imagine the same thing going on, but in a much different tone, and with a much different style added.

      Incidentally, both Zero Hour and the original Airport were based on books by Arthur Hailey. The sequels, of course, had nothing to do with him, and I agree with Siskel that they should be retitled, since the airport is no longer important to the story.

      @@jessecoffey4737 Ironically, Zero Hour is actually a very good movie. We had watched it with the intent of lampooning it, and finding all the little references in Airplane.... and we were pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed the film. Then we got tickled pink when we saw the original actor of Ted Striker from Zero Hour in Airport 1975, which was certainly intentional casting :P

    They really should have retired the "Airport" name after the first one. The first one was a "day-in-the-life" type of movie that actually involved an airport as a plot point. The rest of them were just really bad "Irwin Allen in the sky" knockoffs that were little better than TV movies; hell, this was even directed by a TV movie director!
    This was almost like the TV movie "SST Death Flight," except with better visual effects, lower-grade actors and no viruses.
    Semi-Quasi-Interesting bit of trivia: The original "Airport" was actually shot in 70mm. I can only assume 70mm stock was way less expensive than it is now.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 3 місяці тому +1

      I'll have to disagree, the original 1970 Airport had a special charm about it, and was able to keep the tension going even on scenes that (on paper) would seem to drag, but they don't. Plus you had multiple separate plots running simultaneously that all converge seamlessly into each other.
      And I personally enjoyed Airport '77 more than 1975, if only because of the underwater rescue aspect of it (which... lets be honest, the movie shouldn't have even been called Airport at all, it really should have been called Coast Guard Rescue LOL)
      All that being said, ranking Airport 1975 third among those three movies is like an Olympic Bronze Medal. It may be third place, but its STILL an Olympic Medal.
      '79 on the other hand.... oof, talk about diving head first off a friggin cliff.

    If Wagner wanted to off Blakely he should have took her to sea and let a shark eat her. Seriously the disaster films ended in Dec.'78 when a movie called Superman came out which was a disaster film in itself but with a positive edge. Airplane was just the icing of the whole genre.

    Siskel's hopes came true and they have stayed true for four decades. The box office and critical success of the comedy classic *Airplane!* in 1980 was a big, big help in *Airport '81's* failure to come into existence. *Airport '79* has been posted to UA-cam under the title of *The Concorde Plane* if you want to see what they were panning: ua-cam.com/video/B3ac9ve_2hk/v-deo.html
    An Italian dub, under the film's overseas title of "Airport '80" is also on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/AkEnomry--I/v-deo.html

    Here's my take on the situation. "Airport 1979" was very dumb, sometimes incompetently made, but it was also fun to watch and parts of it were hilarious. Then you take a movie like "Schindler's List" was laborious and tedious and overlong and uninvolving. I suppose you can say that it was a more competent production, but I also can't really say it's any better than this airport spectacle because I would rather watch the 1979 cheese fest seven days a week.
