    10 coins -6 coins = $1, so the coins are 1/4 dollars, ie. Quarters

    As others have noted, John left out dimes in his list of coins. He also left out the half dollar and dollar. While none of those left out coins could be the solution, John should have listed all possibilities.

    I found the question imcomprehensible and English is my first language . the coins have the same value as one dollar and 6 coins. Is it a one dollar coin? All the coins are the same.!!!! So 7 dollars.
    , but there were 10 coins!!
    It would be so helpful if you could use the metric system like the rest of the world.

      math is your problem not the lack of the use of the metric system.

    10X (amount of coins) = 100 (ct) + 6X => 4X = 100 => X = 100/4 = 25 ct. = 1 quarter.

    All I had to do is understand that I had 10 equal value coins, 4 of them were the same as a dollar, so the value had to be a quarter. The question doesn't imply that the 6 coins are less than a dollar, so it didn't matter that the total monetary value of the coins is $2.50. I didn't need algebra, I just used logic.

      You are missing the point of a lot of his videos. Sure you can reason this and many other example problems out in your head by logic or common sense knowledge. The point is to be able to look at a word problem and learn to create an equation from the information given to you. Most people won't be able to solve more complex word problems that require more complex math by logic alone.

    Greetings. The coin is $0.25. Four of the coins is (4×.25)=$1.00 since they are the same value.

    ruled out all the coins that didn't make more than a dollar with 10 of them. Tested hypothesis by using six quarters equals 1.5 +a dollar equals 2.5 dollars divided by 10 it still holds true.

    I tried algebra but could not get further than the original equation: 10x = 1 + 6x. :(
    I really need to practice my algebra.
    But once you figure out the wording it's obvious.
    Not to mention that there was only 4 options anyway.

      the 1 is actually 100, one dollar is one hundred cents. or 1 = 4x or x = 1/4 dollar, and in the USA, that is a quarter coin.

    Help solve this problem. Jane bought a box of candies to re-sell at $3.5 each. She made a profit equal to 40% of her purchase price after she had sold 68 of them. What's her net profit after she sold all the candies in the box?

    The problem seems more of trying to understand it than solve it.
    Hopefully...
    10c = $1 + 6c
    4c = $1
    c = $0.25
    MORE FORMALLY:
    this problem has one unknown
    c : coin's value
    given
    10 coins eq.1
    specifically
    10 c = $1 + 6 c eq.1.1
    one equation in one unknown
    $1 = 10 c - 6 c
    $1 = 4 c
    c = $0.25
    VERIFY
    10 c = $1 + 6 c eq.1.1
    c = $0.25
    10(0.25) =? $1+6(0.25)
    $2.50 =? $1 + $1.50
    $2.50 =❤ $2.50✔️✔️

      @keithmills778 9 місяців тому

      Well, obvious if you're in Canada or the US. Other countries would have trouble with this as they don't have coins with a value of 25 percent of the main denomination. For example, Australia has five, ten, twenty, and fifty cent coins. Technically, Canada has a 50 cent coin, too, but they're not distributed so you rarely see them. In Australia, you see their fifty cent coin all the time.
