    About that annoying sound you said the Harbor Freight collector made: some noises can't be accurately measured in decibels, and have to be 'measured' using psychoacoustics. I worked in the mega-yacht industry, and we had to make the ships as quiet as possible, but sometimes noises have a harshness that can't be measured with instruments, and has to be judged by human juries. A lot of times the motor or whatever it was, was also making something else vibrate, and the combination of sounds was way more irritating than the motor itself. Congratulations on your new(ish) system!

    Grind the 4 U shape bolts taking a little off of the hook end so you can get the basket off quickly with less screwing the plastic forever.

    Best wishes on your new system. Nice set up….I have a smaller Jet system that I purchased years ago and the one thing I love about it…..I moved it out of the shop into an adjoining wash room closet…..really really made a difference in noise that drove me nuts. BTW your intro was super cool 😀

    Congrats on the new system. I currently have 2 2 stage HF dust collectors in opposite corners of my shop and would love to upgrade to something similar to yours one day.

    Congratulations, the new layout and dust collection system look great! Regarding the use of four inch connections, it might be wise to leave another blast gate open somewhere - otherwise, the system could get starved for air, or lack lift due to limited airflow. I know it’s an issue in some shops, with some systems. Check with Oneida.
    Best wishes and stay safe!
    And please, wear hearing protection!

    That thumbnail is perfect. I just started the video but I’m hoping you mention the reasoning behind it. I laughed pretty hard when you mentioned it on wbat

      I'm glad you enjoyed it and you're part of the cool kids club of people who know the origin. I'm afraid for the video, I left it as more of a cold open. Give 'em a laugh, then walk away.

      @@GunflintDesigns the opening was great too. Even better to know the origin. I have the HF dust collector and know exactly what that brain rattle feels like. I even felt it listening to your video. Nice job as usual Mark!

    Cool. I've been debating between this 3 hp one and the other 3 hp version from Oneida. What made you choose this one over the other 3 hp versions?

    Major improvement Mark, nice installation. Whatever you do, protect your hearing. It's all about sound pressure over time and there will always be a machine running with the dust collector adding to the noise. Be careful...

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  10 місяців тому

      Very true! My dad is mostly deaf. Both my grandpas were mostly deaf. I know too many people who didn't protect their hearing when they were young. I'm pretty fanatical about my ear protection.

    What is the app you used for test the sound? Always looking for a better meter. I installed my dust collector 6 years ago and build a movable wall lined with Rockwool. It dropped the Db level from the low 90s to upper 50s. It is a little bit of a pain to move to get to the collector but can now have normal conversations in the shop with it running.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  10 місяців тому

      Good idea! Looks like that app was called Decible X.

    I ran my Oneida for 5 years with no Bgates. But chocking the flow with Bgates can lessen the efficiency. So I opened most of the gates.

    OK, I'll say it. That thing looks like it really sucks.😎
    Dedicated runs look great! There's been more times than I care to admit where I turn on the DC with a remote and use a tool only to realize the hose is still connected to a different tool.
    🤦‍♂

    I have this system in my shop, and I absolutely HATED the angle "iron" frame that supports the extractor's motor. Every time I bumped it, it would twist or sway, and just seemed really unsafe. It didn't seem like it was going to be very supportive for a very long life in my shop. I took some 2x2 angle iron that is 3/16 thick (overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry), and taught myself how to weld, and like the old saying goes, "a grinder and paint will make you the welder you ain't". What I ended up with is a frame that is probably 100 times stronger than the stamped steel angle pieces they give you to bolt together. The extractor itself, is hands down the best I have ever used, but I honestly did not trust the support frame they included. On a side note, I think your shop is doing a very poor job of hiding a sleeping giant. Your concrete floor is a ticking time bomb, that will one day, probably in the dead of winter, bring your entire shop down, and I pray nobody is in it when that happens. I would hire a structural engineer to tell you what needs to be done to replace the concrete floor, and then get a few estimates for pouring a new one. It's going to be a lot cheaper than having to rebuild everything, AND replacing your tools and machines.
