    I bought another treefern in the spring, a pre order from Seagraves. I ordered a 4ft one but was sent almost the twin of yours. I was furious at the time but it has proved to be a better option in the space ive planted it.

    Really helpful and interesting! I’ve been dreaming of building my Jurassic garden and have finally started with two phoenix palms so I’ll be taking lots of notes! Good show!

    I'm up in Glasgow and got a 7' tree fern and used your method with the hessian sack and insulation but put straw and fleece in the crown. We got minus 12°C according to my garden thermometer. I'm hoping it's survived its first winter as I don't have much shelter from the wind in my garden. Love your videos

      Hi Steven, thank you very much for both watching and commenting. I think you have all you could have done for your tree fern so if there's any justice it should thrive. let me know if you see any signs. Mine aren't doing much just yet so don't panic. mark

    Love the new tree fern! I love trees that have stalks that are bent or twisted. It gives the garden some quirky interest! I have never seen one of these in my area for sale , sadly. Wish I could find one! It will look great next to the new pond. Maybe some boulders around the bottom would give some support and natural interest? Can’t wait to see what you do!

      Hi Lisa, thank you, i think boulders would work actually, it's a very interesting tree shape isn't it? I love it. Mark

    I would use an old stump and make a bit of a stumpery to support your fern over the water

    Mark the new project should look great when it's finished. I would get box iron make a ( n ) shape then welded a bit of longer flat bar to the bottom then slide Tree fern in.
    I would bury and dome shape a raised bed and watch it grow 😂

      Hi Paul. Thank you. I think I understand what you mean. I think it's going to require something along those lines. Thanks again. Mark

    Mark, you've said a dangerous thing. Not to water tree ferns in the winter. I think that what is more accurate is to say not to water the crown to avoid the growing point having freezing water around it.

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  4 місяці тому

      Yes that's good clarification. I usually say that. This time I said "you don't want to let it dry out but you don't want to be watering". Thank you

    Been tempted to order another , just been out to cover the crown again as I'm paranoid its going g to die. Bought a 6 ft one last time but thinking of getting g a smaller one to see the canopy more

      Hi Rick. It's a big investment and a worry. I understand your paranoia. Hope yours comes through fine and....go on, treat yourself 😊

    If you’re putting the curved tree fern next to the pond then the mound of soil should be plenty enough weight to hold it in place through summer while it’s rooting i would’ve thought. The Matt of roots will hold the soil together nicely too.

      thank you, I agree with you actually. but I think I'll take just a couple of temporary precautions just in case. mark

    The roots are for stability only just the top is a live. Lovely plants. Like the steel bar and will rust so you won't see it

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Steve, I originally thought that, but a botanical person showed me evidence that the roots contribute to the feeding of the crown. Effectively it's second hand information but I trusted the source. One day I'll get around to finding out properly and do a video one way or another. Yes I think your point about rust is ideal. It's almost the same colour right?

    Could you train the roots to grow laterally away from the pond thus anchoring the cantileverd fern further away from the pond. Install a root barrier directly below the existing root ball to achieve this. Bit radical but just an idea. Might be stupid idea but if it worked it would be my idea 😊

      Thanks David it's a nice one isn't it? I was wondering how people felt generally about the monetisation but hopefully it will be acceptable if I reinvest the proceeds into projects.😊

    Could you cantilever it with a large flat stone buried in the berm?
