  • There is a beautiful symmetry to music and in this mini-series of lessons, we're going to explore three examples that you need to know about. To do this we're going to see how you can split an octave into two, three, or four equal parts and learn about the intervals and chords this process creates. (Full series playlist - t.ly/EdMm5)
In this first lesson, we're looking at splitting the octave into two. The octave of 12 frets can be split into two identical intervals, each of 6 frets...three whole steps… hence a tri-tone (three tones -‘tone’ is the alternative name for a whole step).
The tritone (or devil's tritone) is commonly labeled as a diminished fifth, the famous 'diabolus in musica' - the devil in music. The perfect fifth of the major scale (5) is flattened by one fret, making it a ‘diminished’ fifth (♭5) (‘perfect’ intervals flatten to ‘diminished’ intervals). You will identify the tritone as the diminished fifth when it spans five musical alphabet letters.
It can also be considered in a different context as an augmented fourth. The perfect fourth of the major scale (4) is sharpened by one fret, making it an ‘augmented’ fourth (♯4) (‘perfect’ intervals sharpen to ‘augmented’ intervals). As a chord extension, you will see this identified as a ♯11. The tritone will be identified as an augmented fourth when the interval spans four musical alphabet letters
The tritone is considered a symmetrical interval as it splits the musical octave perfectly in half. The tritone spans six frets horizontally on a single string. Across a string pair, the tritone is found one fret higher on the string physically below. That shape is raised by one fret between strings 3(G) and 2(B) (always the exception!).

Hello Ry could your courses and teaching methods be applied to the Bass? Really enjoy your content, many thanks.

Hey! Yes. These concepts will work on bass in standard tuning. Treat strings 6(E)-3(G) of the guitar like strings 4(E)-1(G) of the bass.

After rewatching the first third of the video a few times it dawned on me what was implied but not said, is that the key to the duality of the triton is that either note of the tritone can be the Major 3rd or the b7 of a Dom7
Just like how C to F is a perfect fourth when viewed from C or a Perf 5th viewed from F…
It’s a simple thing in my head that simplifies the first 3 min of the video, but looks complicated when I write it out. 🤦‍♂️

Yes, I could have made that clearer from the beginning. Thanks for the feedback 🙏🏻

@@Rynaylorguitar by min 5 you had said as much… I hadn’t gotten there yet. Great video(s). Great books. Love your direct, visual thoroughness. Exceptional. As a lifelong student of guitar I can say unequivocally that your work is profoundly illuminating

Ok theory beginner here, so you split 12 notes in half, three whole steps. I get that note. Then you play two notes, no explanation of how the note on the B string came about???

I didn’t make that explicitly clear. The note on string 2(B) at the 5th fret is E, the same note as the open string 1(E). I was putting the E and Bb notes together to show you the sound of the tritone. Hope that helps 🙏🏻
