  • How Victor Banjo was Killed by Firing Squad- the Story of Victor Banjo who led Biafra Army. It was the work of fate and providence that a Nigerian army Colonel of Yoruba origin turned into an accidental Biafran Major General, fighting on the side of the secessionist army.
In 1967, this accidental Biafran, Maj. Gen. Victor Banjo was arrested, tried and executed along with three others for subversion.
In this video, we reexamine the trial and execution of Victor Banjo and three others.
We will answer the questions - was Biafran government fair to Banjo?
Was Ojukwu paranoid and overacted or was its Banjo’s fault!

The Banjo story has been overtaken by emotions and the truth has been religated to the background. No matter the side you stand, it is clear that Banjo betrayed the Biafran side of the war. The points of argument are whether Ojukwu was right to execute him, and whether he should be seen as hero or villain. Whilst it's normal for Yorubas to see him as a hero, it is equally right for the Igbos to see him as a betrayal and a villain.
But ultimately, Ojukwu wouldn't have killed him and others. It's also been established that the execution of these men affected the war negatively instead of positively. Thank you.

This is war propaganda. Ojukwu loves power, very desperate to eliminate any one on his way since Gowon became head of state. These three executed soldiers has good intentions for Biafrans more than Ojukwu who is desperate to become a head of state of Nigeria or Biafran state if he happened to win the war. These three executed heroes could have stopped the war much earlier if they could have remained alive because they saw the war as a senseless, unreasonable and a moronic decision by a visionless leader which Biafrans stands no chance to win. They saw the disaster ahead and it later happened and Ojukwu ran for his life. Who is fooling who?

Legal analysis of the Victor Banjo case reveals a case of double jeopardy. Under the Nigeria Army Act there are offences listed punishable by death. MUTINY is one of such offences .All Biafra Army officers including Ojukwu .Ifeajuna.. Banjo. Philip Effiong .Alex Madiebo etc etc defected from the Nigeria Army and were therefore guilty of Mutiny. Secondly Banjo and Ifeajuna were convicted of treason rightly or wrongly under Biafra Army rules and regulations. They therefore suffered a case of double jeopardy (Banjo and Ifeajuna). They were guilty under Nigeria Army Act and they were also found guilty under Biafra Army rules and regulations. Who could have helped them? Only God Almighty. The NIGERIA side would not accept them as heroes and the Biafra Side rejected them as traitors. That is the TRAGEDY of these fine officers who were University graduates and well trained Army officers.

Nothing far from the truth. some Igbo leaders have shown interest in Lagos in the past and part of the reason why some Yoruba who witness the events of the past are still afraid of Igbo. Ojukwu did this at start of civil war. also, Nnamdi Azikwe tried this severally. at a point in time he wanted Lagos state to be separated from western region and on another occasion he wanted to be ( leader) elected into office in western region and this takes courage and popularity of Awolowo to defeat him

Secondly I am surprised Banjo's family did not take legal action against Ojukwu and the Igbos later when Ojukwu returned from Ivory Coast. Thirdly Banjo had prominent brothers and sisters. Even if he succeeded, at some point it will break him or the mission would failed because the defence line is overstretched with limited troops and equipment or a part of him would have sympathy for the west. May be Ojukwu was pushed to use it to test his loyalty but it’s wrong.

Brother, be careful of all that you hear. The story of victor banjo the Yoruba general was doctored. The teller has done nothing but to cover the real truth just to divert attention from the real criminals(Azikwe, ironsi and ojukwu) this particular people don't like to be judge even when they know they're wrong and that's exactly the kind of human beings they are.
What pisses me off most of the time about this people is they careless even when the real truth is told. They just want to always shove off the truth to hide their conspiracies or wicked acts
Back then, power was in their hands. They occupied every big big position in the country including making calabar the federal capital territory back then.
Ammunitions was moved to the eastern part of the country. They had majorly Igbo superior officers in the military. Every average igbos were jubilating because they were in control.
They forgot something behind and that is what I called "TACT" Yoruba used tact to conquer their greed. Thanks to Obafemi Awolowo's ideology. It was the simple reason they hate every Yoruba race.
Yoruba never wanted the war. Ojukwu assured Awolowo he won't attack any part of the western region, but they craved to take Lagos by all means. Azikwe tried and connived with the governor general then in 1953 to separate Lagos from western region, but thanks to Awolowo who stood his ground and told them that we are no country and we have every right for self determination to go our separate ways. Zik was the greatest traitor of all. He conspired greatly and he was the reason why we are suffering now.
He wanted the whole country for the igbos as their name implies. Igbo means "me first" ask them.
When the treatment of the minority was too much by this same igbos. That was when Adaka a top military officer declared that they were no longer part of Nigeria. Guess what? Ironsi sent Ojukwu after him. They fought for over two months or there about before Adaka was captured. He was tried and was to be executed by December. He was still in jail waiting for his death in December when the northerners decided to go after ironsi and every igbos in their land n retaliation of the killing of their leaders.
Ironsi instead of him to bring those that plotted the first ever bloody coup in Nigeria to book,he left them roaming the streets. Majority of those that were killed were the northern leaders and few Yoruba leaders meanwhile Awolowo was supposed to be killed too but he was in prison on the accusation by Zik that he wanted to sabotage Nigeria. Can you see who the big traitor was?
Amadu bello and Awolowo only said to the rat zik that a clause should be inserted that each region should have right to self determination in the future if our forcefully marriage don't work. That was the crime Awolowo committed and was put behind bars. This same igbos used a Yoruba man to accuse Awon that he had ammunition in his house. Can you imagine that? Bcos they know Awon was a big threat in western region to them and their greed to take Nigeria bcos back then the hausas were not ready for western government. Amadu bello said so! That they were not ready. Awon made his own mistakes by trusting that rat called Zik
Meanwhile, before the Igbo massacre of the northern and western leaders. They tipped their igbos elders to take cover during the process. Some of them ran out of the country in their wives wedding gown. No Igbo leader was killed. The most saddened story of it was the killing of amadu Bello's wife who was pregnant as at that time. They killed Tafawa balewa in the most gruesome manner and it was what angered the hausas most. Trust them now.
They launched attacks and they went for ironsi who was on a visit to Adekunle Fajuyi. Adekunle stood his ground despite the warning but as it may be we are Yoruba with conscience and that was why Adekunle told them that they'll never have ironsi the traitor without getting killed.
The soldiers gave Adekunle much time to excuse himself but he stood his ground and he was killed.
Remember, I told you that Adaka was captured for declaring that his region will no longer be part of Nigeria due to the bad treatment from this igbos? Ojukwu now declared Biafra. They went as far as Ghana to resolve the issue but Ojukwu being a greedy goat refused thinking because he had some Russians mercenaries along with him,he'll win the war.
Awolowo told him not to attack western region he agreed but he was so gullible that he wanted Lagos at all cost.
Now ,this was the real reason Victor banjo was killed, even though he deserved what he got. As at when he turned his back on Nigeria and decided to join the Biafra armies. Ojukwu had assured him that he has no business with the western region that he's got issues with the Hausas. Se you know we Yoruba can trust easily. He agreed to join forces and fight for Biafra.
Awolowo was released on hearing that Ojukwu had lunched attack on Edo and captured Edo. Awolowo got to know that he had betrayed the agreement they both had and was heading towards Ore. That was when Awolowo went to speak to general banjo to stop and this was the exact words of Awolowo to General banjo Victor " banjo Te le mi,ibon o ni ba o!" He told him several times but banjo told him he has sworn allegiance not to betrayed Biafra that he was so sure that Biafra will win the war. That was banjo's statement to Awolowo.
Awolowo left him and intelligence got to ojukwu that he banjo and awolowo had a meeting and they had their conversation in Yoruba language. He was angry and sent for his arrest immediately and told him bcos he met with Awolowo and they talked in Yoruba language, that made him a traitor and he was killed without trial at all. Ojukwu wasted no time in killing him
Adaka knowing the maps very well also did a great damage to their Biafra crusade. General Benjamin Adekunle aka black scorpion showed those traitors pepper during the war.
Brother the truth is Yoruba pure sand in their wicked ambition to take over Nigeria for themselves and that's why we remain traitors till today to those pests called igbos. If you want videos of how the Yoruba forgave this pests I can send it to you. But they are unrepentant viruses till date . during Jonathan's government. They marginalised Yoruba from government. Go check the list if you ever saw any Yoruba at any top post. Thanks to tinubu once again who brought Yoruba back to life. They can never like us bcos we are their stumbling blocks to their devilish acts all the time.
Bro. The real traitors till date are the igbos. A lot of evidences we have and they don't like you once you know their secrets.
Anthony enahoro was an Igbo man who was one of those who ran to abuja like rats to stop Abiola's mandate.
Very wicked race. Now they want to rule Nigeria? That will never happened and if they tried any foolish thing come the government of Tinubu, they'll feel the hit 1000 times.
Truth be told ,I'm not a fan of one Nigeria. I represent Yoruba Nation but I'll rather have jagaban has my president and go to bed in peace at night than having obi who hated his own tribe and will not enter a particular church as my president. That will never happened.
Tinubu will spend 8 years and Yoruba and Hausa will join forces once again to choose Hausa for the next president. If you're a youth don't fall for the igbos antics. They're moles who can't be trusted unless you want set yourself on fire.

I agree with you on Ironsi not taking decisive action in dealing with the coup plotters, which arguably is the first consequential leadership failure in this country. And the retaliations were also not commensurate and complete disregard for the rule of law - one of those involved still walk freely today like nothing happened. It shows that there’s really no country. Two wrongs don’t make a right. We all share blames in where the nation is today. You people should find a way to resolve what is going on in this country today, find out who is your problem today. Is it your politicians or security agents? If so, who are they? If the marriage cannot work, then you guys should advice for restructuring your government in a round table or part ways so that every part of the country will respect each other. I have never been a fan of Ojukwu and his actions when the leadership of his Ibo race fall on him. He failed woefully due to his deceptive propaganda nature which he sheepishly used to drag his Ibo people to a war that they lost before it started because him Ojukwu was desperate took over the power as Nigerian or Biafran head of state. Ojukwu military career was over after the second coup of July 1966 that is why he became insubordinate to Gowon in order to scatter the show for Gowon which later led to civil war. If Ojukwu remain loyal to Gowon's government, he will never remain as an eastern governor and Gowon will replace him from that position or retire him with immediate effect. In a worst scenario Ojukwu may be killed by the Northern soldiers due to his closeness to Ironsi government, that is why Ojukwu make sure that everything is fucked up for Gowon's government in the expense of his Ibo people. 95% of dead innocent Ibo civilians that was forced to join the Biafran army during the civil war did not know exactly the truth of the matter that led to that civil war due to limited source of information by then. Lt. Colonel Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu is a visionless selfish wicked ruler. Azikiwe and Ojukwu has a big misunderstanding during that civil war because Zik asked Ojukwu to stop the war because Zik saw the rate of the war casualty on the Biafran side while Ojukwu and his clicks were popping champagne in their executive offices. In the case of Victor Banjo, you can read my comment above.

There are different views to the Banjo story... What is certain, however, is that Banjo was not in support of the war from the beginning. Could this be the reason why Ojukwu killed him at the slightest disagreement? In my opinion, He accepted the offer hoping to use the opportunity to end the war. On the other hand, Ojukwu would have handled the situation differently as many have suggested. Probably because the evidence against the four men was weak. Top of his mind though was for the case to serve as a deterrent to others.
I don't think there would ever be a consensus on the Banjo case.

Every military personnel knows that the price for a coup or sabotage is execution. How much more in a war situation? Banjo’s actions led to the death of many Biafran soldiers. Banjo and the likes of Ifeajuna were all agreed by all accounts to have rescinded on their missions along the line. For whatever reasons they became apologetic to a unified Nigeria instead and decided to undermine the Biafran advancement westwards, they were apprehended and served as expected.
Banjo is a traitor any how you look at it. Lest we forget, He was part of the first military coup and enjoyed the same mercies as his colleagues which Ironsi’s govt was criticized for, as being sectional. He was amongst all those released in the East by Ojukwu as the war broke out. Likewise Awolowo’s release was meant to be a goodwill presentation to the west by Ironsi’s govt. He did not live to realise that kind gesture as agreed with Adekule Fajuiyi; who stood with him in death bcos He knows the truth and the plan to release Awolowo to endear their govt to the west. Due to the suspicions around that time from the Jan coup. It was barely 6months of assuming office and trying to steady the ship - these days we wait a full tenure and still ask people to be patient for change.

Banjo and Ifeajuna are dangerous and were not to be trusted. Thesame activities that got them in prison in the first place, is exactly what they assumed in Biafra. The video is here on UA-cam, where one of the officers on that Ore front who told it all how Banjo was captured and taken back to Enugu. In his account, they noticed many unclear counter orders from Banjo. He was having late night meetings in which other key officers were not involved but for selected few. Information was bn withheld, Biafran soldiers were dying of food poisoning and not even on the battle field and so on. More so, it must be noted that He was captured, not that he fell or retreated with the Biafrans soldiers when they came under superior artillery from the Nigerian army. That on its own reveals something.
Similar to Adaka Boro; Whilst many say Ironsi crushed the first secession attempt by Adaka Boro’s volunteer force, they also refuse to reckon with the fact that Ironsi only imprisoned him too like those who did the first coup. Adaka Boro was not executed by Ironsi, but he was by the same Nigeria at the end of the day - very important fact.
As the war broke out, The Gowon govt who came in via a coup that killed Ironsi, deployed the services of the likes of Adaka Boro against his own territory. Which he did very well out of vindictiveness. Served the via the 3rd marine commandos of the Nigerian army showing them ways around the creeks and into Igbo heartland. Along the line he also developed a cold feet and was served the military way by Benjamin Adekunle aka scorpion. It is never an easy thing to kill your own people regardless. Those using you know you are the height of traitors no matter the situation in which you chose to play such a role. So it is fair to say, like Adaka Boro, like Victor Banjo.
The only difference is that when Banjo was released by Biafra and put to use, despite a clear mission of just capturing the seat in Lagos, out of merely a mistrust of Ojukwu’s true intentions as his apologetics claim, he undermined the Biafrans as soon as they crossed Benin and at the first point of call, Ore.
Whilst in Adaka Boro’s case, when released by Nigeria and put to use, he happily spilled the blood of his own people until it got to his eyes. As soon as he showed signs of disenfranchisement or reluctance, he paid with his life. Such people are never sparred in a war situation at the slightest sign of failure. Bcos such people who are now privy to the secret dealings of a military establishment in a war, cannot be let free regardless. Even when they may be innocent, once things turn sour it is the standard and strategic step military regimes have taken all through history to either execute or lock away such personnel. So there was no way it was going to be any different in our case. Lesson: If one must join the enemies camp against their own, then they must pray there is success or face the hangman.

You amazed me with this your fabricated lies against banjo. I find it interesting when you said banjo was arrested and taken to Enugu. Please go and do more research on it. Banjo was tricked by ojukwo to a friendly meeting in Biafran HQ, he went with his troops and he was told that he alone is required in the meeting by the CNC,he went in alone and was disarmed by Biafran soldiers in the HQ. Another lie is to say banjo participated in the 1966 coup. Even the account of the plotters states that banjo wasn't part of them. The highest ranked officer in that coup was a major. Ironsi arrested banjo for coming into his office with his service pistol and later framed him with another attempt to overthrow him, saying he was part of the 1966 coup just to balance the equation and change the igbo coloration of the coup. You lied again when you said ironsi's intention was to release Awolowo, hence his visit to fajuyi. The actual truth is that ironsi was only going on a nationwide visit to all the governors of the regions,he had just left lieutenant colonel Hassan Katsina of the north in Kaduna before going to the west. Hassan was aware of the northern soldiers intentions to murder ironsi in Kaduna but he protested that nothing should happen to the CNC within his region. Fajuyi's decision to die with ironsi was sacrificial, his major intention according to accounts was that ironsi was his guest and leaving ironsi to die alone will be he was a part of the conspiracy by the northern officers thereby putting the west in a difficult situation. What you said about Adaka Boro is equally very incorrect, because ironsi actually sentenced him to death, unlike the coup plotters who were only detained and not tried. For the records, Boro wasn't killed by Nigerian army, Boro had over one thousand loyal boys whom Gowon gave him the privilege to conscript into his troops from the creek. Obasanjo's account states that he was killed by fleeing Biafra rabels in a crossfire.

Ojukwu was the main traitor and coward here. Banjo and co retreated from the war front in Ore. But Ojukwu ran away and left his people to face the consequences of his visionless leadership. If he was indeed brave and courageous, he could have stayed behind after losing the war or take a cue from Hitler. He got into the war due to arrogance and envy of Gowon. Because of his educational achievements, he felt he was too superior to take commands from Gowon. He merely used the pretext that Igbos were being killed in the north as excuse. Who Started the first coup in Nigeria? Most of the officers killed in the 1966 coup were northern military officers and civilian politicians. Northern Military officers then retaliated months after installing Aguyi Ironsi and went for the Jugular of the Igbo officers. Tit for Tat! Ojukwu's stupidity resulted in the deaths and displacement of thousands of his people. Ojukwu's stupid idea to attack and occupy places that are non-igbo during the war (especially Yorubaland) shows that he was not smart. His decision to send a Yoruba man to destroy Yorubaland further demonstrates his smartlessness.
It's good to identify your boundaries very well before starting a war of self-determination for your land and people. It appeared Ojukwu didn't know where the boundaries of Biafra were before and during the war. By launching an attacking on Yorubaland, he was basically waging a war of occupation on territories that didn't belong to Biafra. With that decision alone, he had laid the stage for Biafra to lose the war. He just wasted innocent igbo people's lives.
