Best part about the gasser in this vehicle is consistency: 6 mpg unloaded 6mpg loaded 6mpg just sitting in your driveway. Probably had a full tank just before 6:46 😂

I went from a 7.3 diesel to F250 6.2 gas for my truck camper. I love the simplicity of the gas engine. Like you I compared the under hood situation of the 6.7 and gas. The diesel is incredibly complicated by comparison! My diesel was pretty reliable but it did strand me 3 times and always 100s of miles from home.

@@mtnbound2764 you missed the point. I NEVER typed that "x engine does NOT have issues" or that the V-10 "does NOT have issues". Read my comment again. But as I typed, go and read my comments about he 7.3 (gas) compared to the V-10. There is no comparison. People have "overhyped" the 7.3 and the stupid "Godzilla" name doesn't help since it's actually fairly "puny" and not really worthy of a name like Godzilla that represents something huge and powerful. It's not even bigger than the 460 and in terms of power, it's nothing amazingly spectacular by any means ESPECIALLY when you consider how many decades of improvements have been made. It's smaller than many other Ford engines and has only marginally more power than the later versions of the V-10. I can go on and on but again, I'll say to just read my comment I typed up. It was quite lengthy but I think I make some great points about the situation. I'm obviously biased. In my opinion, the 7.3 (gas) is just going to be a ticking time bomb that will be problematic for Ford. Sure, the V-10s had their problems but how bad were they really? Let's sit down and figure this out. 1. They had the obvious problem with the exhaust manifold bolts rusting or breaking off which would "usually" cause noise. This isn't anything detrimental as it is just more annoying than anything else since it is just louder. But, in some cases, it would barely even be noticeable since it might only happen during cold startups or certain conditions. Now sure, people can try to make the argument that an exhaust leak could potentially EVENTUALLY lead to an engine problem but the reality is, this is extremely rare. How many engines have you heard that blew up or stopped operating due to an exhaust leak? Hardly any. Sure, fixing the exhaust bolts is a pain in the ass but at least it isn't something that is going to leave you stranded on the side of the road. 2. The spark plugs blowing out is an issue that is definitely not great however, again, this isn't something catastophic that is going to cost thousands of dollars to repair and again, won't "likely" leave you stranded on the side of the road. Of course the noise will be annoyingly loud if one does blow out but at least you've got 9 more cylinders to get you to your destination or to a shop if you have to. But again, this isn't going to be a super catastrophic situation that's going to leave you on the side of the road. 3. I can't really think of any other "main" issues other than one that comes to mind that again is minor and it happened with my 2002 F-250. The oil filter cooler housing gasket leaks on some models but this isn't even that "common" of an issue although in fairness, I'm sure it's more "common" than reported. My guess is that by the time people decide to "deal" with this issue, they are having other work done like the exhaust manifold bolts and/or leaking exhaust gaskets or something else. I say this is "minor" because again, it's more of an annoyance than anything else. I've had my pickup I think for 5 or 6 years now and it's leaked almost ever since I got it. I have a new gasket and I could fix it as I was a Ford tech at a couple dealerships and have my own shop now but I'm too lazy to worry about it. Oil leaks aren't that big of a deal unless they are major and actually ARE a "big deal". Again, they just leave a mess and are annoying. This isn't going to leave me stranded either. So, again, it's not something worth worrying about. ------------- The point was, the V-10s are a tried and true platform and are cheap to maintain. Reliability is so crucial today since so many vehicles are breaking down and spending weeks and months in shops. This isn't fun when you or your family want to be doing things. Not only that but the added cost of having to pay for a repair and a rental vehicle. No thanks. I never said it was without its flaws but the flaws it does have are so minor since they are mostly cosmetic or more of an "annoyance" than anything else and the flaws are outside of the engine. I'll take that over something that costs $50k or more with a variable cam phaser, variable speed oil pump, thin walled block between the cylinders, camshaft/lifter delamination or other issues with the valvetrain, spark plug wire problems, and a few more I'm sure I've forgotten anyday.
Nice truck! Look forward to seeing the build! I just got a F250 gas engine. Really debated getting diesel. I kind of had second thoughts about it, but this video and the comments make me feel better about my decision !

Very cool. I'm with you on the gas motor. I've owned an F-550 diesel, and while it was a great truck the cost of upkeep on the diesel motor was crazy. Good luck!!!
I’ve had my truck since 2015 and never had a problem with the engine itself it is always with the DPF system. It’s why i recommend gas over diesel now.

Congrats. Good call on the 7.3L. I love my 6.7L and it rips but the operating costs are insane, especially when you are doing fuel filters every 15k, oil changes every 5-7.5K etc. Buckstop makes these things sexy too.

I'm currently rebuilding it again now in my garage, deleted the cab over (inspired by the Dodge-mahal) and doing a number of other things. Filming it, may throw it up on you tube one day. All that being said, I've narrowed my ultimate dream build to a composite box on a 4x4 cab chassis, either a van or truck not 100% yet on which, but you're going in the same or very similar direction that I plan on going! This is going to be the most interesting build on you tube! I'm excited for you! Looking forward to all the next vids!

Nice... I am a Chevrolet diehard. But I give credit where credit is due. The F550 is a beautiful truck. It's very smart to go with the gas instead of diesel. For all the reasons you listed. Plus, many times you get in area, and they don't have diesel at the pumps. So great choice there. It's just a smart move to purchase new. Not just the creature comforts. When you're on the road, as you stated. Become very appreciated. You can spend hours driving, stop and get out. Feeling fresh and capable. Be curious to hear the price tag. But understand that is not something many people like to share. When all is said and done. You're going to have a couple of dollars invested in this setup. But as you said it is "your home". So you need to look at it from that point of view. Room to live in, comfort, capable, and dependable. So do it right. Btw, don't forget (seeing the deer) to install a really nice bumper and grill gaurd assembly [with winch, and lights of course]. 😎👍

@@Down2Mob in spite of my criticism and I'll admit, my "hate" for the 7.3 (gas) engine, I hope for your sake that you're one of the lucky ones and it serves you well. I mean that with genuine sincerity. I think this is the first time I've watched any of your videos and I'll be honest and say that I didn't even get but more than 30 seconds in and didn't watch the rest (I may watch the rest when I. I don't know you and you don't know me. So, it does me no good for something bad to happen to you. I just really don't like that people have made more about this engine than it deserves (in my opinion). I think a lot of the "appeal" was simply due to the fact that it was an "old school" traditional pushrod style engine and a lot of people liked that. My "issue" probably more than anything is that I'm a Ford fan and just so disappointed because they could have done so much more than they did and it's disheartening. I worked as a tech at a couple dealerships back in 1995 to around 2001 so I have a little more of a personal connection in that regard than just being a "fan" even though Iiked Fords (Thunderbirds in the 80s) before I became a tech. Perhaps you don't care to hear this but what bums me out is that they should have known better than to go with a variable cam phaser setup and should have went with a stationary (reliable) sprocket setup. They have taken a huge beating from the 5.4 debacle and with the V-10s being so reliable, they should have known better. I don't care so much that they went back to the traditional pushrod design although I don't like it because to me, I feel like they are going backwards really and to me, there wasn't anything "wrong" with the overhead (modular) design and they should have continued on that path. And I don't even care that they went back to a V-8. That's fine. But like the saying goes, "there's no replacement for displacement". Well, why in the hell did they make a smaller version of one of their most iconic V-8s such as the 460 or 7.5 liter? When I say "version", I DO NOT MEAN that the 7.3 is a "version" of the 460. Just that they are making another V-8. Why make it smaller in displacement? I know that it all boils down to weight and overall size for logistical purposes as well as production costs and retail price and blah blah blah. I "get" it. But it's so stupid to try to save 20 to 40 pounds when they could have made it closer to 8 liters or at the very least something like a 7.8 or 7.7. But, it's REALLY STUPID to try to shave off a few pounds and make the casting walls just a little thinner in between the cyliders. All to do what? Shave off a few pounds because they "think" that it's going to make a 0.2 (if that even) mpg difference? Whatever. Consumers want reliability and if making the casting another 5% thicker will damn near guarantee there won't be issues with the coolant jackets or cylinder bores distorting or anything else with the engine block, then you freaking make it 5% thicker because it will make it stronger. Besides, these pickups already weigh over 7k with many over 8k at their curb weight. Is it really going to matter for MPGs if there is another 40, 50, or 100 pounds added on? Hell to the no. The variable speed oil pump is just another stupid thing. Again, why mess with something that has worked for decades? Not to mention, let's put a shaft that runs all the way from the front to the back of the engine to have even more potential issues for failure. Sheesh. The spark plug wire issue is a "meh" issue that is just stupid. I don't know what they missed there. Personally, I think they should have made an even larger version of the V-10 or at the very least, they should have made a dual overhead cam 4-valve version. There is a channel called "Build it yourself" that actually made their own 4-valve heads for the V-10 from some 5.4 valve heads. They're putting it in a newer Lincoln and they got it running. It sounds pretty cool if you're into fast revving engines like in the indy cars. To me, it would have made more sense to make a larger version that was possibly 8.4 liters or again, at least 7.7 or 7.8 liters with 4-valves and even stuck a turbo or supercharger on it and I guarantee people would have been lined up for it. People want a good alternative to the diesels and although it can be argued that adding a turbo or supercharger does add more problems, they are already doing it to so many vehicles already so adding it to the V-10 shouldn't have been a big deal. Seeing an alternative with at least 600 horse and 600 lb. ft. of torque shouldn't have been that big of a deal. I'm sure you've already heard this but if you care to consider some advice, at the very least, make sure you're doing your maintenance regularly at around 4k to 5k miles at the most if you're using regular conventional oil. This is actually probably too much for regular oil really and it should be more like 3k or 4k. But, if you're traveling mostly highway miles, you could get away with more than 4k. If you're using full synthetic oil, you might be able to get to 7k or even 8k. I know many will say that you shouldn't go that high but the reality is, as long as you're not trying to "push it" and skip oil changes, 7k or 8k on full synthetic is not that bad especially if it's mostly highway miles. I know a lot of people will recommend no more than 5k even on synthetic but it's all relative. If you're doing a lot of city driving, then perhaps you do want to go with a lower interval. I suppose in your case, if you're going to be doing a lot of "off road" camping and traveling at a lot of lower speeds for many miles or even idling it a lot more than normal, then perhaps you want to do it even less and do 4k with full synthetic. With the difference of price to just go more frequent even with full synthetic over conventional oil, it's probably worth it if it will save you from having to change a cam and/or lifters or worse, the engine.
@Down2Mob Although lengthy, you should actually read my seperate comment that I posted on my own addressing the various issues and why I feel the way I do. You can find it if you want to as it was posted today.
Congrats on the new country Cadillac! My 2019 F150 has some similar amenities, the Ford Gassers are very nice, and very powerful, plus like you said, in your video, they are less expensive for running costs vs a diesel, and anymore, you can get several hundred K miles on a gasser these days! Exciting times!

I just typed up a long and detailed comment on why the 7.3 gas engine is NOT a good choice and why the V-10 (preferably a 2016 year model and newer RV, U-haul, chassis cab, or F-650 or 750) is BY FAR a better option. The 2016 and newer have the 6 speed auto transmission as opposed to the 5 speed of the previous 3-valve versions that came out in 2005 as well as other things. Go find my comment and learn a few things. The 7.3 has some bad downfalls and has many known issues that are not worth dealing with. The V-10s are tried and true and reliable. Ford should have never messed with such a great platform and it's embarassing that what they came up with has such a small marginal increase in power and not any better fuel mileage. And so many other negative things that make it not worth it. Again, go read my comments.

runaway roses channel had similar problems with their truck. Insurance was super expensive for their 4500 Dodge. they bought a F350 for a while until they could sort it all out. they were not building a custom camper with it though. they were using the truck for a Big foot and Northern lite fiberglass truck campers. Theory on cause of issue is low oil pressure at idle speeds. Best! I also hope to purchase a bison overland in bed camper on day!

6mpg just sitting in your driveway.

I went from a 7.3 diesel to F250 6.2 gas for my truck camper. I love the simplicity of the gas engine. Like you I compared the under hood situation of the 6.7 and gas. @@eldridge201 every engine does. dont act like the v10's are problem free.
-------------
The point was, the V-10s are a tried and true platform and are cheap to maintain.

@@Down2Mob What kind of box are you going to put on your truck?

I just typed up a long and detailed comment on why the 7.3 gas engine is NOT a good choice and why the V-10 (preferably a 2016 year model and newer RV, U-haul, chassis cab, or F-650 or 750) is BY FAR a better option.
@@eldridge201 Owned V10s since 2004. They had lots of issues. Towards the end of production, a lot of those had been sorted out. The 2015 V10 I traded in had engine issues. Now they are obsolete. The first 7.3L V8s had growing pains too, but 23 and later are mostly trouble free. The 7.3L is getting more popular with people who previously owned diesels, and got fed up with emission systems and DEF. Some people like V10s, but many of us that owned them for years would disagree. But, run what works for you. Don’t mind the Godzilla passing you on the hills. 😎
It would be sick if you made a passthrough from the camper into the cab! Congrats dude!
I am most likely going to, have to figure out a few things with that!
7:10 " I don't want to drive wide open". When you put that camper on that truck you will be driving wide open whether you like it or not. Get used to it. You will forever regret not buying the diesel. You will see. The worst part is going downhill and realizing you don't have an exhaust brake and your brake pads are shot. DO NOT cheap out on buying a truck. BTW. I own the 7.3 (2023) gasser and Cummins diesel (2019). Night and day I call it.

@Down2Mob heck yeah!
I bought a 21' F-250 with a 7.3 GODZILLA. The driver side leaf spring pack was twisting, dealer order a new pack and it did the same. But the most concerning problem was on startup the truck would rock backwards...... was at dealership for 31 days at it's second oil change. For the 3rd oil change I drove off with a 3500 6.7 Cummings...
That’s a bummer about your truck. I’m very hopeful for my new truck to be reliable, time will tell!!

Be careful with idle time on your new Godzilla motor. I’ve spoken with my commercial dealership in my area, it appears like an unusual amount of 7.3l’s are requiring full replacement as a result of lifter delaminating issue. Theory on cause of issue is low oil pressure at idle speeds.
