  • Just like we prepare for many other things around the homestead, preparing for a new baby is no different. It takes forethought and planning to help with the smooth transition when adding a new family member.
Not only that, but it's important to have plans in place to allow both mom and baby the appropriate and healthy amount of time to recuperate and recover after delivery.

So true about the slow population growth. Yesterday I saw a family going into Aldi's as I was leaving. Brought a big smile to my face. 3 girls, 2 boys , mom was pregnant, and dad was carrying the 2 littlest ones. That was NOT unusual when I was growing up.

We are a family of seven. Myself, husband, and five little girls. People look at us like a circus side show in public. Plus we always get the random rude comments from strangers about still trying for a boy. It bothers my husband so much when people say that in front of our girls - they are perfect and enough for us. It takes a real man to live with six women 😉

@@servantwarrior880 sadly, too many ppl believe the media and the "Greta Thunberg" environmentalist. They think the population is too big when in reality it is quickly shrinking. Next time someone asks you about having a boy, I'd tell them no, we're planning on having 4 more girls and start a softball team. 😊 Congratulations on your big beautiful family

Amen, it is a fearful/closest thing to death that we ladies go through, but when Father blesses us with new life, it is amazing, not only to know that HE is still making moves, but that HE's not done yet and is still making us fruitful, bestowing HIS children to us, one that HE trusts will mold and guide them where they need to be. I became Christian in my 30s. Met my husband late, had babies late, but was so blessed with 5x wonderful children we don't deserve, all through our 30s. So many people, including many in our church think it is a problem because we won't be able to give them all the "expensive stuff" or fund university. Which we would only encourage if they were on a clear path for it (doctor, lawyer etc). We get by, we are blessed!

I too became a serious Christian in my 30s. Married at 35 and began having kiddos at 36 (my first baby was at "elderly" age in the doctor charts!). I am turning 43 in April and we are expecting baby #3 in October. The Lord is so good. We are able to homeschool while not having very much money either, but we make due and trust in the Lord and He always provides. God bless you sister.

I remember with my first the profound realization that I was the only 'God example' my child would understand for quite some time, and it helped me to be a better person, mom, and teacher. We went on to have 3 more. This was the early 1980s, and people would look at us in disbelief... and even ask, 'Haven't you heard of birth control?' They were all 2 years apart. I am happy to see large families, but most happy to see when mom is well supported/nourished by family.

Loved this video. Thank you for putting an episode out on such an IMPORTANT topic. We just were blessed with our 10th baby 5 weeks ago. We opted for a more a hospital birth, but we were home just after 24 hours. I have the SAME postpartum history as Carolyn. Depression, milk supply issues, poor latching, unexplained fatigue and pain well after delivery. After I delivered my second, I came home from hospital and made home made pizza for lunch! It wasn't until we had our 5th that I said maybe I should just rest for 2 weeks. My husband saw HUGE differences after that and with my last 2 Mom is resting for 6-8 weeks afterwards. I have only just started being more up and about in the last week. Love the jammy statement!! I prepared at least a months worth of freezer meals for us and have really invested in our children and taught them how to do things. Our jersey cow had her first calf two weeks ago, and they have handled all the milking, butter and cheese making. My oldest has taken over the home milled sourdough bread making (she's making better bread than I was!!) Our third is handling breakfasts, and second is so good with the toddlers! My husband and I found some info on mother's in India moving back in with parents so no duties fall on her, only to recover. No laundry. No cooking. Nothing. We have lost this beautiful culture for sure. It's so sad. Also, I researched a lot on skin to skin contact with baby. We always did it in the first couple of days. With this one, it's still a part of our routine. It's crucial for them and for MOM. I have not had any struggles with postpartum depression this time. I had an opportunity to just be with my oldest and baby last night, my husband took everyone else out, and I was in the kitchen with her preparing supper and she says "momma, you really need to go rest, you can not take care of anyone if you aren't taken care of." Wow. Coming from her (14) I realized mom guilt should not be an issue here. They understand. Please momma's, whether this is your first or not, take care of yourself. We run selflessly non stop and you are still being selfless as you properly nurture and care for your sweet baby, so you can care for the rest of your family- when you have properly cared for yourself. Congratulations to you both, Josh and Carolyn!

What a wonderful comment. I have always wanted a big family but our first two had pretty severe medical issues that affected their breathing and feeding. After dealing with those scary first years and gtubes and surgeries for them both, with no answer as to why they were so affected (both had cleft palate but a very advanced case of it) my poor husband said no more. I have always mourned for the babies we could not have (adoption is still on the table but the medical issues my girls have make that a challenge, physically and financially). I am so happy to see such large families, especially as much of the population is seeing the value of a homesteading lifestyle.
Congrats and Yahs blessing on you all!

Unfortunately the reduction in the birth rate isn’t all due to “changing demographics.” There is a huge surge in fertility issues. I know this not only through watching so many friends and family members go through this, but I can also speak to this personally. This is also one of my personal drivers for greater self sufficiency…knowing what’s going into an on our bodies.

Nature is phasing out humans, as evidenced by our fertility issues and sterility rates in men. Given what we eat, how we polute the Earth, all the medications we put in our body, how we treat other people and beings on Earth, it doesn't surprise me. We don't live in a balanced way and Nature will balance what she needs to, even if that means a species going extict. Fortunately, our future-evolved species will have more compassion for ourselves and each other.

A large part of prepping for recovery is "giving yourself" grace! When you are blessed to do so much all day, every day it can be exceedingly difficult to sit and "do nothing" (see also: bond, heal, rest, produce milk, care for a brand new tiny human, etc.). There is much mental preparation when it comes to "Sit! Stay!". Congratulations to the lot of you for the arrival of this perfectly perfect little person! May God shine upon you:)

If folks haven't ordered chickens yet, very likely they just won't get any,OR at least not till late summer. Hatcheries all over this country are sold out. Some are totally booked for the rest of the year, with no shipping dates left at all. If you already have chickens and a rooster or 2, get an incubator. They are easy to hatch. Or check your local groups or listings. Chicks and ducklings are selling super fast!

Oh!! can I offer something for you, Josh??? Have you ever heard of a Ginger poultice? You grind ginger root up really fine and make a package out of it, which you bandage onto the area where you have joint pain. It will get real hot (can't burn you or your skin tho) and draws any inflammation out of the area. Also, you can instigate healing of the area by applying a Castor Oil compress to it. If there are any bone spurs or such, the oil will dissolve them, but can not hurt the healthy bone. The oil is very thick, so put it on a soft cloth and give it a while to soak in, before applying. 😊

You so made me cry. We are on week 12 of baby #7 and it has been 7 years since we’ve had a live birth. We moved from N. Idaho to Oklahoma 4 years ago and there has just been so much fear in this transition. You are so right about having a little being an act of faith. It is taking every once I’ve got just to have faith that we can see a live baby come oct/Nov. and your right I haven’t seen pregnant woman hardly at all in a few years…

I admire people like you that have many kids . Mentally it amazes me that people have that much capacity in their brain to handle that many kids . I get easily overwhelmed with just my three. It’s just me home with the kids all day and I couldn’t handle anymore lol

I rarely comment on UA-cam, but this pantry chat was just so relevant for me… I really appreciate it! I’m 36 weeks with my 4th and the reminders to give myself time to recover were very helpful. (But for now, let the nesting continue! 😁)
I also relate to/agree with your commentary on the birth rate and fear vs Faith. 👌
Best of luck with the birth of your baby and your recovery! God bless! ❤️

This episode nearly had me in tears. Although not a homesteading family when I was preggo, we are a military family and I was on my own, moving across the country, with baby for the first 1.5 years of my kiddo's life. Taking care of yourself is just so important and advice I heard but didn't know how to really execute lol. I LIVED with baby in a Happy Baby Carrier so I was able to work, get chores done and tend animals/tasks. There is a lot of WISE and INTENTIONAL advice in this episode. I felt like I was constantly doing things and it caught up with me as well as a first-time mom with no one to lean on for help. I just appreciate this episode and appreciate the teamwork to keep the family unit operating and successful.

Great chat! I noticed eggs have gone down in pricing some. For a while, I did not want to buy any. We got 7 chicks at TSC. They are selling the chicks as fast as they are getting them in. We also have eggs in an incubator, which are due to hatch next week.
Best of luck with the delivery of the wee one.

In our area there lots of babies coming this spring. Two active young ladies in our church are due within two weeks of each other, along with several others of young women I know. But you are correct so many don’t want children and that’s so sad. Faith over fear. Our Pastor did a series on that subject, Faith over Fear. God Bless you and your beautiful family.

Now Lacie has had her home born baby, it is heartwarming to see how MIke is stepping up to take the baby and play and bond with him, giving her a break and how him and the kids work together to take over her chores and just let her rest and recover. Selah has become so proficient in the kitchen while bottle feeding her own little baby goat. If you have not watched her home birth video, it is worth watching and it was a day of multiple babies, they had 3 goats who also gave birth, to a single, twins and triplets!

Praying for all the things to fall gently into place as you enter this new season! I have long since ended the new baby in my home period but the wisdom of preparing for any season of needing time for recovery of health post illness or surgery is wisdom that needs to be considered and shared! Depression after an injury, illness or surgery doesn’t have to be inevitable if we sow systems into the fabric of our daily lives to meet these challenges! Great pantry talk, definitely got my wheels turning! God bless you all! 🙏❤️😊

This was like it was spoken straight to my heart ❤you guys are so awesome. Relying in our Faith in God but also managing the fear. I have 3 children ages 8,7, and 4. Unfortunately I couldn’t have anymore biological babies due to medical problems. We always wanted even bigger like in the 6 range. Honestly even just at three we get looked at weird and snide remarks about wow you sure are busy. I’m also short 4ft 10in and 32 yrs old. People definitely look at me differently. Congrats on the new baby!! My husband and I have looked into the adoption route it’s all a little overwhelming but trusting in my faith that if its meant to be we will make it happen ❤️

So True! Faith over Fear! Just because a hospital releases a new Mom doesn't mean she is ready to hit the ground running. You might feel ready or look ready but you're not. Cut your body some slack until things have settled back in within your bodies ecosystem. Stay in bed as much as possible, No lifting anything heavier than the baby!
