Lenox Avenue (1937)
The Los Angeles WPA Symphony Orchestra
conducted by William Grant Still
William Grant Still (May 11, 1895 - December 3, 1978) was an African-American classical composer who wrote more than 150 compositions. He was the first African American to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony (his first symphony) performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television. He is often referred to as "the Dean" of African-American composers.
Art work by William H. Johnson
The music and the pictures are BEAUTIFUL! I am a big fan of William Grant Still. I formed a youth orchestra in metropolitan Atlanta named after him called the William Grant Still Memorial Youth Orchestra, now called the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia Orchestra. I am in touch with his daughter, Judith Anne Still-Headlee. She has been supportive of my youth orchestra. I keep her up to date on our legacy, which is an extension of her father's. I have a recording of this on CD with the narrations. I was hoping that was on here. Still, the music alone is beautiful. I am also a composer of orchestral music.

What an injustice Still suffered during his lifetime, because of prejudice. Musicians: let’s right this terrible
wrong!
What you said!
Yes go out and buy his record.
What a great selection of paintings to accompany this recording... Well done robt0007.... I find the connections between Still and Johnson to be really interesting...I wonder if they ever crossed paths or influenced each other's work... Alos - love you other videos - nice page to subscribe to!
Thank you for your kind comments.
William Grant Still orchestrated James P. Johnson's "Yamacraw Rhapsody" for Piano and Orchestra of 1928. It is obvious that they knew each other.
what a great upload s!o nice to. have a!??
Still was somewhat an African-American counterpart to Gershwin, at least in the concert music world, though he lived much longer. He was also an expert orchestrator, having played both cello and oboe in his early career.
Perhaps, somethings just need to be repeated.
I only made one comment for some unknown reason eight of same came I am Berry sorry about this but it was no fault of mine
