- Enthusiasts built theatre organs ... and then there was Buddy Cole! The world of music lost one of its finest all round musicians when Buddy passed away. He did however leave behind a handful of recordings of his famous Wurli-Morton organ which nobody thought to try and preserve. His music however, lives on. NOTE: THIS IS AN AMENDED EDITION WITH CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS.
I bought BOTH of Buddy's LPs at the Wurlitzer!! What amazing discs they are!!! They should be re-released!! RIP Buddy!!
My father wasn't an organ aficionado, however, I can remember him all those years ago upon over hearing me listening to Buddy Cole comment that he liked it - it had a distinctive sound. It sure did. A special theatre organist - a musician that played the theatre organ.
Buddy was a professional musician who enjoyed the theatre organ as a hobby, as were George Wright, Billy Nalle and John Seng--all artists who transformed how the instrument was played and heard. Buddy earned George's scorn when he asked him "Gee George, why do play all of
that corny s__t?"
I now have that aforementioned LP, cost quite a bit, and my favourite track is here on UA-cam.
Wow! The piece at the end had string tones that I've never heard so clearly on a pipe organ. That brilliant ear of Cole's certainly was lent to making quite an amazing organ. Even if he didn't use his own organ on this recording something tells me Buddy Cole could coax out of any pipe organ tones never thought to be there. Now that, is registration mastery!
Cathy, this was great to hear!! My Dad was an organist, and sold for Baldwin for many years. He loved your Dad's music..I remember an album in our home with Buddy playing "(Theme From) Picnic/Moonglow"...
Thanks for this informative and wonderful piece. Clare Cole is a national treasure, and one of my dearest friends -- and I shall tell her of the terrific work you've done here. All the best.
This is wonderful!! I was surprised how many of his albums I own when I saw the covers in this video. Thank you for doing these!
Great video of a great artist. Thanks for posting.
I recently bought the 2 CD set of Buddy Cole playing Hammond, fabulous ! Nothing can touch it for pure pleasure !
Aside from Trotter's radio orchestra, Buddy also was pianist in the late 1940's - early 1950's for the Billy Mills Orchestra, the radio orchestra for NBC's "Fibber McGee and Molly" radio show (as mentioned in the video). Do a UA-cam search for "NBC HOLLYWOOD BILLY MILLS" to hear him play in that group.
I am glad to hear this.
GREAT!! Loved it. Thanks.
I used to have that last mentioned LP and I`d give lots to have a copy now, it was shear brilliance.
Este órgão tem um som nostalgico, maravilhoso
Excellent
@euni1
Memories is right.Hi Cathy, love your dad's style of playing, I got into dance bands from my dad's time. He knew George Wright. I met Bill Langford that played a the Ye olde Pizza Joint in Hayward, use to do his yard for side money, yes he gave me some lesson on the pipe organ, now am in my 60's, yes the good old days, memories.
The Hauptwerk digital organs are now making it possible to play the closest thing to genuine sound in your home using very cheap resources. The program's free, 2 MIDI keyboards, a pedalboard, and you're complete.Search 'Hauptwerk' for videos that might impress you of organists who've made these home-built virtual organs, both classical and theatre. I believe the general population of organists will be the advocate you search for. Now almost anyone who wants a pipe organ can have one 'for free'.
Your dad was a fantastic theatre organist!!!!! :)
One of my prise posessions is a Columbia LP recording of "Pipes, Pedals And Fidelity" by Buddy. The one number on this recording that i dearly love is Buddy's rendition of "I Get The Blues When It Rains." it is supurb and the best I have ever heard.
This is fantastic! Did you get any of your information from Stan White of the UK? He was a prominent individual in the British COS. Apparently he and Buddy were good friends. Would love to chat more with you sometime as I have met Clare Cole. Thank you for adding this tribute on UA-cam!!!
Tack tack
Just to correct you, Buddy Cole's organ survives intact today at the National Motorcycle Museum here in England, right next door to Birmingham Airport.
I used to hear the instrument at Cap's Galley, Hamilton California.
great musicain great organ
Is this the guy that did Mr Lucky for Henry Mancini ? What a tribute !
did Buddy COle ever record under the pseudonym of "Alffredo Mendez?
Any bio of Buddy needs a mention of "Mr. Lucky," It's the most most well-known record on which he was featured, & hardly anyone knows the organist was him.
the CD reissue of that was on alshire. the sound even on CD is tinny, unfortunately- it deserved a better remastering job.
I'm wondering how Buddy became friends with Art Tatum; there are several recordings of Art in Buddy's home
@gramrfone The Cinema Organ Society seem to think that it's the complete organ. The size of the instrument would also back this up, 3 manual 27 rank.
The Cinema Organ Society know that it's not the complete organ. It has a different console and some of the ranks of pipes have been changed.
@@JohnLeeming23 how much of the motorbike museum organ is the Buddy Cole organ?
@@richardharrold9736 The changes took place before the organ came to the UK. I'll see if I can find out more detail.
Oh', I was referring to 'Waltz in G' in my comment below.
What album was the piano and strings track of So In Love taken from on this video?
Cole Plays Cole, available on CD
Wasn't Buddy Henry Mancini's Organist at one time?
Buddy got a lot of living and creating, into not very many years. He should have had more. Not fair.
I know Im kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released series online?
